Do you have a third grader learning multiplication?
(We do!!) Science Unlimited has created a program entitled "Math Exerciser". This program allows children (or adults) of any age to exercise their basic math - addition, subtraction and multiplication. It provides entertaining practice, and teaches the correct answers. This application was developed in Microsoft's Visual Basic. It is absolutely virus free. Click on MathExerciser.exe , and select "Save As". If you get a "MSVBVM60.DLL" error when you try to run it (older machines will), then email us, off the "Contact" page, and just ask for the DLL file to be emailed to you, indicating the name of the file. These files are probably also available from the Microsoft pages.

CECmath.50 TITLE Number Tick Tack Toe A math Game for Primary new life while givingstudents extended practice in basic addition and subtraction facts.
    http://www.col-ed.org/cur/math/math50.txt
CECmath.50 TITLE: Number Tick Tack Toe: A Math Game for Primary Grades AUTHOR: Ann James, Klawock Elementary; Klawock, AK GRADE LEVEL: 1st - 3rd OVERVIEW: As surely as the sun rises and sets, kids will learn how to play tick tack toe. They do not have to be taught the game. Kids learn it the way they learn jump-rope rhymes and knock-knock jokes. Yet, kids lose interest quickly because tick tack toe is not challenging enough. There are only about a dozen different outcomes. by changing the rules and symbols slightly, you can give the game new life while giving students extended practice in basic addition and subtraction facts. OBJECTIVE(s): 1. Students will practice basic addition and subtraction facts to twelve. 2. Students will use high level thinking skills to win at the game of tick tack toe. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: Students will simply need lots of scratch paper and pencils. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. The class will need to be divided into pairs. 2. Each pair makes a standard tick-tack-toe grid. 3. Instead of using X's and O's, students use the numbers through 9. Use numbers through 12 for a greater challenge. Each number can be used only once during a game. 4. The object of the game is to complete any row, column, or diagonal so that two of the three numbers add up to the third. The order of the numbers does not matter. 5. The first move may NOT be in the center. (If the first player is allowed to make that move, he or she can always win the game.) 6. The second and subsequent moves, however, can be anywhere on the grid. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: There is not any sure fire strategy for winning this type of tick-tack-tow game. Likewise, there seems to be no advantage in going first. The games, however, tend to end with a winner rather than in ties. Most losses result from carelessness. It's easy to make a mistake after four or five numbers have been played. That's when the game requires close attention, higher level thinking skills, and accurate adding and subtracting. The game is far more complex than tick-tack-toe in that there are thousands of outcomes. The one constant is good number facts practice in an enjoyable context.

There are many ways to teach addition and subtraction. All teachers have their own ways of doing it but here are some ideas, tips, and activities that can help you.
    • Manipulatives: The most important thing to remember when introducing or practicing the concepts of addition and subtraction is to use manipulatives. By using manipulatives, students are able to master basic facts. Many items can be used as manipulatives, ranging from food to school supplies. Fact Family Homes: Fact families can be a difficult concept for students to understand, so here is an activity to help them master the concept. First, I teach students that in a fact family, there are four number sentences which use only the three numbers. For example: make up a fact family which looks something like this:
The students learn that the same three numbers are used throughout the fact family and that they just change spots when they go into another number sentence. After this lesson (which takes between 1-2 days, depending on age/grade level), the students then create homes for the fact families. Here is an illustration of what their fact family homes will look like:

    53. MathSteps: Grade 1: Addition And Subtraction Facts To 20: What Is It?
addition and subtraction Facts to 20. The basic addition and subtraction add9 to a number. Just add 10 to the number, then subtract 1.
    http://www.eduplace.com/math/mathsteps/1/a/
Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20
The basic addition and subtraction facts are all the combinations of 1-digit numbers (2+2, 6+9, 8+4, etc.) and the corresponding subtraction exercises (18-9, 7-4, etc.). (See the fact chart at the end of this page.) To you, these are probably automatic. You don't need to think about them because you've memorized the answers. That immediate command is what you're striving to teach your students. There are a variety of strategies that can be used to figure out or remember facts. Addition Properties: The zero property states that zero added to any number is the same as the original number. The commutative (or order) property states that the order of addends does not matter: 3 + 4 = 4 + 3. Subtraction Rules: There are two rules for using zero in subtraction. Zero subtracted from any number is the original number (this is the counterpart of the zero property of addition), and any number subtracted from itself equals zero. Counting on and counting back: Doubles and near doubles: If you have two groups of 8 objects, you have double 8, or 16, objects. Doubles facts are usually easy to remember, and can be used to learn other facts. Since 8 + 8 = 16, and 9 is one more than 8, 8 + 9 will be one more than 16, or 17.

This textbook contains illustrations of many different types of flowers. The teacher may want to try to gather a few of these types to be used as hands-on manipulatives.
    Activity:
  • Each page in the book contains a different type of flower which is respresented by circles at the bottom of the page. On the first page the Fragrant Water Lily is represented by white circles. Ask the students how many circles are green. On the board, write the equation 1+9=10. Continue to discuss the circles with the children as you read the book.
  • At the bottom of page 11, there are 20 circles. Covering up the red circles that represent the Maltese cross blossoms, ask the children how many circles are left. Have them write their own equations.

    Secondary Subjects -
    Grade Level - 5th-7th grade
Lindsey Mrozinski Mathematics 5th-7th Grades 50 minutes Incorporating Addition and Subtraction into Everyday Life II. RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND This first lesson is one of the nine lessons in this unit of computation and estimation. It is based on the Pennsylvania State Education Standard 2.2.5 A. This standard states, Create and solve word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The first lesson will help the fifth-grade students to learn and incorporate addition and subtraction into everyday life situations through the use of word problems. They will be using whole numbers only for this lesson. We will be using content that is interesting to students. The word problems will contain things such as hobbies and interests they can relate to. The students should already be comfortable with regular addition and subtraction problems, so using word problems will force them to look at addition and subtraction in a different way. III.
