Addison's disease
Addison's disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) Addison's disease is also known as hypoadrenocorticism. It is an insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland. Since these hormones are essential for life, this is an extremely serious disease and it must be treated as such. Adrenal insufficiency can be primary or secondary. Primary adrenocorticism affects salt/potassium balance in the body and glucorticoid as well. Secondary adrenocorticism usually only affects the glucocorticoids. It is not known why primary adrenocorticism occurs but it may be an immune mediated process. Secondary adrenocorticism probably occurs most often when prednisone or other cortisone being administered for medical reasons are suddenly withdrawn. It can occur as a result of pituitary cancer or some other process that interferes with production of hormones that stimulate the adrenal glands. Most dogs with Addison's disease initially have gastrointestinal disturbances like vomiting. Lethargy it also a common early sign. Poor appetite can occur as well. These are pretty vague signs and it is extremely easy to miss this disease. More severe signs occur when a dog with hypoadrenocorticism is stressed or when potassium levels get high enough to interfere with heart function. Dogs with this problem will sometimes suffer severe shock symptoms when stressed, which can lead to a rapid death. When potassium levels get high heart arrythmias occur or even heart stoppage which also is fatal. In some cases, especially secondary Addison's disease, there are no detectable electrolyte changes.

    Overview
Addison's disease is a rare endocrine, or hormonal disorder that affects about 1 in 100,000 people. It occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. The disease is characterized by weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, low blood pressure, and sometimes darkening of the skin in both exposed and nonexposed parts of the body. Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and in some cases, the hormone aldosterone. For this reason, the disease is sometimes called chronic adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism.

Background
My name is Glenn Kardel. I have polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II, frequently referred to as Schmidt's syndrome. The classic manifestations of this syndrome are adrenal insufficiency plus autoimmune thyroid disease and/or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. I have all three of the above conditions: Addison's disease , hypothyroidism, and type I diabetes.
Addisons and hypothyroidism are treated with oral hormone replacement medications. Type I diabetes is the most serious and difficult to control of the three conditions. Treatment usually involves balancing insulin therapy administered through injections or a pump, diet, and exercise with the goal of maintaining normal blood sugar levels.
After I was diagnosed with Addisons and started taking hydrocortisone, I started to have highly variable blood sugars. I began to have sugars in the 300's and also frequent hypoglycemic episodes. I started searching for information about the interaction between Addisons and diabetes or any special treatment strategies related to the two conditions and was surprised to find almost nothing.
Given the adverse and potentially dangerous effect Addisons has on diabetes, this information should be explicitly stated and available to people with Addisons and diabetes. This website is my attempt to provide information on this subject and hopefully connect with others who have useful information about Addisons and diabetes.

Addison’s: A Name all Dog People Should Know By: Shannon Wilkinson shannonwilkinson@earthlink.net http://home.earthlink.net/~shannonwilkinson Taking care of our dogs is an important job. We must pay attention to their symptoms and decide what deserves a trip to the vet and what may resolve on its own. Sometimes though, our knowledge, perseverance and intuition is most important, take these cases for example: Catherine started limping on her hind leg and was diagnosed with early arthritis. Sherman was becoming more and more lethargic, had difficulty jumping and started shivering; the diagnosis was a pinched nerve in his back. Merlin’s vomiting and lack of appetite resulted in a diagnosis of pancreatitis. The lethargy that Taz and Fritz experienced was initially written off as nothing to worry about. Bengy’s gastric upset and seizure was believed to be caused from meningitis. While Alta, Otter, Cosette, Belou and Molly’s symptoms of lack of appetite and lethargy were attributed to gastric upset. Simon’s lethargy, lack of appetite and sudden leg pain was diagnosed as leptospirosis.

window.resizeTo(800,600); var width = screen.width var height = screen.height document.write("") So Your Dog Has Addison’s Disease The diagnosis is in; it’s Addison’s disease. All of us here at AddisonDogs.com remember hearing those words from our vet. Sometimes they brought up feelings of sadness, or fear, occasionally relief to know what’s going on. Then the vet starts talking about mineralo-somethings and prednisone and DOCP and daily this and monthly that and soon your head is swimming. You just want your dog back. That’s how AddisonDogs.com came to be. The adrenal glands are located above the kidneys. What is Addison’s disease anyway? Let’s start with a brief overview of Addison’s disease. It is the common name for hypoadrenocorticism, or adrenal insufficiency. It is a disease with symptoms that are common to many other ailments, making diagnosis difficult and sometimes a process of elimination. But once Addison’s is correctly diagnosed, a properly treated dog can live a normal, active life. The adrenal gland , one on each kidney, is made up of two layers, the cortex and the medulla. The outer area, or cortex, secretes corticosteroid hormones such as cortisol and aldosterone. The medulla, part of the sympathetic nervous system, secretes epinephrine (adrenaline), which is generally not affected by Addison’s.

Addison's Disease
Contributed By: Donna Hegstrom
W.H.W.T.C.A. Health Committee
Description: Addison's disease results from a failure of the adrenal cortex to produce aldosterone, cortisol and corticosterone. Of the three hormones, the loss of aldosterone is most important clinically. Aldosterone us responsible for maintaining the equilibrium of sodium and potassium in the body. Clinical Signs: The dog may exhibit varying degrees of anorexia, vomiting, weakness, dehydration, depression and weight loss. Acute episodes may be precipitated by stress and potentially fatal cardiac abnormalities may emerge if the disease is not treated. Age of onset is usually young or middle-aged dogs and is more common in females. Diagnosis: A complete chemistry profile including blood count and sodium and potassium levels should be completed. Treatment: Treatment consists of medication and periodic blood work to maintain the appropriate chemical levels in the body. Mode of Inheritance: Research suggests that the disease often is familial and an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance has been suggested. This familial tendency frequently is seen when hypoadrenocorticism is associated with other endocrine deficiencies such as hypothyroidism or hypoparathyroidism.

Alternate Names : Adrenal Insufficiency, Adrenocortical Hypofunction, Chronic Adrenocortical Insufficiency Definition Addison's disease is a hormone deficiency caused by damage to the outer layer of the adrenal gland (adrenal cortex).
Endocrine Glands The adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. They consist of the outer portion (called the cortex) and the inner portion (called the medulla). The cortex produces three types of hormones: sex hormones, glucocorticoid hormones, and mineralocorticoid hormones.
  • The sex hormones, androgens (male) and estrogens (female) affect sexual development and reproduction.

A-Z Illnesses and Conditions
Addison's disease By Dr Rob Hicks Caps on the kidneys Insufficient hormones Adrenal attack ... Getting the balance back Addison's disease is a rare condition that is estimated to affect around one in 40,000 people. However, it's an important condition to look out for since when treated appropriately a person with Addison's can live a full and long life. If missed though, it may have tragic consequences. Caps on the kidneys The adrenal glands are very important manufacturers of different hormones. These help to control blood pressure and salt and water balance, and help our immune system fight off infection and deal with stress and illness. There are two adrenal glands, and each one sits like a cap on top of the kidney. The inner part of the gland secretes adrenalin and noradrenaline. The outer part of the adrenal gland is made up of three zones that secrete a group of hormones collectively called corticosteroids or the adrenal hormones. These are:
  • Aldosterone - this regulates salt and water loss through the kidneys and so helps control blood pressure.
