Blood results from pets with this condition often show dehydration, an increase in kidney waste products (azotemia, uremia), metabolic acidosis (too acidic a body) elevated blood potassium (hyperkalemia in 95% of cases), low blood sodium (hyponatremia) and occasionally elevated blood calcium. Urine specific gravity is low in seventy-five percent of the cases.

Addison s Disease. Information about Addison s addisons disease (ADRENOCORTICALINSUFFICIENCY). What is Addison s Disease ? The adrenal glands

ADDISONS DISEASE (ADRENO-CORTICAL INSUFFICIENCY)
What is Addison's Disease ?
How does Addison's Disease occur ?
Usually the condition is due to a process of self-destruction called auto-immune disease : cells called lymphocytes develop the ability to destroy otherwise healthy adrenal cells. Occasionally, tuberculosis or some other inflammation or infection can be responsible for damaging the adrenal glands. Surgical removal of both adrenal glands (adrenalectomy) is sometimes required for other conditions, and will produce the same need for treatment.
Why does Addison's Disease occur ?
The tendency to develop the more common auto-immune type of Addison's disease is often inherited: in fact, other glands (particularly the thyroid) may be similarly affected, either in you or in one of your close relatives.
Treatment Involved for Addison's Disease
The missing hormones need to be taken lifelong. Hydrocortisone (cortisol) is the most often used replacement steroid, usually in doses of 15 to 30 milligrams per day. Normally the tablets are taken as two or ideally three doses each day. These must be taken on a regular daily basis and not left off for even one day. The salt control hormone used to replace the deficiency of aldosterone is a drug called fludrocortisone. This is usually given in doses of 50 to 200 micrograms a day.
During Treatment for Addison's Disease
Fludrocortisone is given day after day without change in dose unless advised by the doctor. However, you may sometimes make the decision to take cortisol in increased dosage (but never reduced). Reasons for increasing the dose include emotional stress, accidents, infections (particularly those causing a fever), and other illness. The reason for raising the dose is to try to copy what normal adrenal glands would do under these circumstances.

Secondary adrenocortical insufficiency, due to lack of ACTH, does not constitute Addison's disease. Most cases of Addison's disease are idiopathic, and may represent autoimmune destruction of the adrenal cortex. Clearly defined causes of Addison's disease are extremely rare, and include tuberculosis (see tuberculosis adrenal amyloidosis , bilateral adrenal metastases, bilateral haemorrhage, histoplasmosis, sarcoidosis (see histoplasmosis adrenal and sarcoidosis genitourinary tract and haemochromatosis . Historically, tuberculosis was a frequent cause of Addison's disease, but this is now uncommon. There are few radiological findings. Plain radiographs may demonstrate adrenal calcification in cases due to tuberculosis , histoplasmosis or old haemorrhage. In idiopathic Addison's disease, the adrenals may be markedly atrophic and difficult to detect on CT or MRI. Occasionally, bilateral enlargement due to granulomatous disease or malignancy may be seen on CT or MRI.

Burns Pet Nutrition - Factsheet
Addisons disease (Hypoadrenocorticism)
Addison's disease is caused by an insufficiency of adrenal hormones from the adrenal gland, the adrenal glands are paired glands located near the kidney. Some of the clinical signs: Lethargy and depression, Vomiting, Weakness, Poor appetite, Weight loss, Dehydration, Diarrhoea, Hypothermia, Shaking/trembling, Polyuria (increased urination), Polydipsia (increased drinking), Slow heart rate, Collapse and shock (may occur in later stages of condition). The adrenal gland produces three types of hormones: Mineralcorticoids e.g. aldosterone
Which have an effect on the levels of the minerals; sodium, chloride and potassium in the body. Without mineralcorticoids, the potassium levels in the body can become so high that they interfere with normal heart function causing shock and rapid death. Glucocorticoids e.g. cortisol

Addison's Disease
Definition:
When a person's adrenal glands become so exhausted that they simply do not function anymore, the condition is called Addison's disease, which is a terminal disease. Symptoms:
It is characterized by blotchy pigment appearing suddenly on large parts of the body, intolerance to heat or cold, reduction in capacity for muscular work, weakness, inability to stand any stress or emotional excitement, whether positive or negative, sometimes nervous breakdown or even insanity, complete exhaustion, feeling that one is going to die, inability to digest food, and other similar symptoms.
In 1855, Thomas Addison described a disorder of the suprarenal capsules, or the adrenal glands. He had the dubious honor of having the disease bear his name to this day in history. Herewith shall be presented a capsulation of the symptoms of chronic adrenal deficiency according to Ivor H. Mills, M.A., Ph.D., M.D., and F.R.C.P. and one of Great Britain's experts on adrenal function:
"The adrenal in this disease suffers from destruction by tuberculosis or progressive atrophy or, very rarely, destruction by secondary carcinoma [cancer] ... most common presenting symptom is tiredness. . . "worn out" but healthy people... loss of weight ... slowly and is not usually gross. . . gastrointestinal upset is not uncommon ... severity depends upon the degree of steroid deficiency... may have no such symptoms of gastrointestinal upset until he gets acute infection ... anorexia, vomiting and occasional diarrhoea... vague abdominal pain ... steatorrhoea [increase fecal fat excretion] to the extent of 30 gm. fat per day, without diarrhea...
