I have a Dalmatian with Addison's disease. She gets a shot of percoten once a month and is doing very well. The cost of her shot has just gone up to $115.00 a month. Is there any way I can get this medication on my own and administer it? I am disabled and the expense is getting to be a real problem for me. The idea of putting her down is very disturbing to me especially since she has done so well with the treatment. Thank you, Irene Answer: Irene- It may be a lot less expensive to treat with fludrocortisone IF you are willing to use a compounding pharmacy to obtain the medication and can afford to pay for some additional testing early on to make sure it works OK for your dog (monitoring potassium and sodium for a few weeks). There have been reports of compounded fludrocortisone not working as well but it is a lot less expensive and it appears to work for many dogs. You might ask your vet to check into this option for you, especially since the lower long term cost seems potentially critical to your Dalmatian's survival in your situation.

It states that the goal is to use the smallest dose of hydrocortisone that maintains the patients well-being and physical strength (relieves Addison's symptoms).
This will minimize the risk of osteoporosis and for diabetics, help reduce instability in their blood sugar.

February 2004 00:44:50 HOME ADDISON'S INFORMATION What is Addison's Disease? By: Sarah J. Baker Wednesday, 04. December 2002 Addison’s disease is a rare, chronic condition brought about by the failure of the adrenal glands. Lifelong, continuous treatment with steroid replacement therapy is required. With the right balance of daily medication, most people with the disease are able to continue life much as it was before their illness. Adrenal function The normal adrenal cortex has an enormous functional reserve. This is called upon by the body especially in times of intense stress, such as surgery, trauma or serious infection. One of the most significant consequences of Addison’s disease is, therefore, the body’s failure to adapt to such stresses and, in the absence of adequate steroid cover, this may result in a state of shock, known as an Addisonian crisis, which is a medical emergency.

Hi! My name is Aspen Johnson. I have a rare autoimmune disease called Schmidt's Syndrome. Although not widely known to the general public, there are many different kinds of autoimmune diseases. While there are treatments to help alleviate symptoms of some of the forms of autoimmune diseases, modern medicine has no cure for it and is yet limited in its understanding of the the cause of autoimmunity.

1. What are the symptoms of Addison's Disease in dogs? How is it diagnosed? How important is early detection? Addison's disease can present suddenly in young healthy pets, or in older pets that have been through major stress situations eg intensive care for road a traffic accident. Affected dogs are in severe shock with pale gums, slow heart rates, weak pulse, cool extremities and often have upset stomachs and weakness.
The clinician would start to get alarm bells ringing when considering the age, history and findings at examination. Bloods for electrolytes and biochemistries often show high potassium levels and elevation of the kidney enzymes. If the potassium is elevated, an EKG (ECG) would show a slow heart rate and depressed P waves (the part of the ECG showing the smaller heart chambers, atria, contracting)
Addison's disease is a life threatening condition that must be treated ASAP. Untreated dogs are usually dead within 24 hours from heart failure brought on by the increased potassium levels.
