Why do these sort of things always happen in slow motion? I held the adder behind its head as I had held snakes before, but casually, smoothly this one unhurried, stretched its neck, as perhaps only snakes can do, and gently nipped my index finger with the side of its mouth. Half an hour on, passing stonechats chatting on the way back to the car, the finger, then the hand, felt distinctly numb, my lips rubbery and anaesthetised. The gear stick in the car was difficult to shift, the hand was puffy and it was now a case of waiting to see what happened next. Back home the next day the arm held high in a sling I read about adders. The swelling went down over the next few days to be replaced by banana coloured bruising, the result of the anti-blood clotting qualities of the venom, all the way up my arm. For a couple of weeks afterwards the finger itched and when on a bike ride the finger went dead and blue in the cool air. I returned to work to find an office draped in rubber snakes and a card with commiserations to Indiadder Jones. A year later as I remember and write, the finger is still slightly numb, the circulation poor and my days of picking up poisonous snakes are over. A week after the incident I returned to the spot and saw the same adder. Crouched I looked into its beautiful liquorice black iris, surrounded by gold.

Namaqua Dwarf Adder
NAMAQUA DWARF ADDER
(Bitis Caudalis)
This burrowing snake depends on its camouflage to hide from predators and hunt for food. It burrows in the sand that matches the snakes color making it virtually impossible for prey and predators to see it.
Description: This species has choppy dark spots and a red coloration. Like all Adder species, this Dwarf Adder has a small head and a large body. Also, like all Adders it is a sit-and-wait predator
Housing: This species will require a 20 gallon tank for baby snakes but the tank size will need to increese to support the growing snake. To save money it would be best to start with a tank that is suitable for a full grown snake. Tank accessories should include a water bowl, suitable turf, and a sheltered place where the snake can hide.
Feeding: This species will feed on mice in captivity but may have a different diet in the wild where it feeds on what is available. Snakes can be difficult to feed or extremely easy to feed. If the snake won't eat the food that is offered, try different food. Even a different color mouse can make a difference.
Water: As with all snakes, a water bowl should be provided with luke warm water. This snake is a desert snake so humidity can be kept around 10%. This little amount of humidity will aid the skin shedding process a suprising amount.

http://home.iprimus.com.au/gunnado/snakes.html
Fierce snakes, also known as Inland Taipans, are the most dangerous snake in Australia. They were first found in 1879 near the junction of the Darling and Murray Rivers. At that time, when little was known of snake biology, they were thought to be an inland variation of the Taipan. No more were seen until 1967, when one turned up in the far south west of Queensland, which it is now known to habitat. The venom yielded in an average milking of a fierce snake could kill 100,000 mice. The Fierce snake has a narrow head, slim body with no distinguishable neck. Back brown with dark-edged scales giving a speckled look, sometimes faintly banded towards tail. Head dark, eyes black, and the belly cream or yellow with darker edges. The average length for the Fierce snake is 1.7 meters. They have been known to grow to 2.5 meters. Hatching from eggs, they normally are in clutches of 9-12. Mistaken identity in the case of the Mulga snake could easily cost the life of a bite victim. They have a broad flat head that is slightly distinct from the neck. Their back is most often copper but varies from light brown to russet, dark olive brown or chocolate. The belly is pinkish or yellowish cream and sometimes has pink or orange blotches. The young hatch from eggs in clutches of 10-20. The Mulga snake is the most massive of the venomous Australian species and its output of venom is the greatest of all. It doesn't rank high in toxicity, but the volume delivered in a bite often increased by a chewing action makes the snake extremely dangerous.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SNAKES Britain has three native species of snake - the grass snake, adder and the very rare smooth snake. Smooth snakes are only found on small numbers of heathland sites in Surrey, Dorset and Hampshire. Here we look at the adder and grass snake, both found in Kent. Where do snakes live?
Grass snakes
often live near water, where they swim and feed. They also live in damp woodlands and meadows. For overwintering they like high, dry banks covered with brambles and rabbit burrows, and also garden rockeries. Kent is a stronghold for the grass snake. Adders are found in a variety of habitats but not generally in areas of human habitation. In Kent adders are now restricted to chalk downland and other areas with free-draining soils. They are in serious decline in Kent.

In some areas this is due to contracting populations of these snakes, but in other areas it is more likely due to their cryptic habits. They are not found in Tasmania or the islands off the southern coast. Return to start of page Venom composition Death adders have large fangs, producing a considerable quantity of toxic venom. However, in humans, the only major effect of this venom appears to be post synaptic neurotoxic paralysis. The venom does not contain either procoagulants or myolysins of significance.

SNAKES THAT ARE NATIVE TO THE UK Viper berus - Adder A full-grown adult adder can be up to 65 cm long - much smaller than a grass snake. The grey-brown background colour of the adder is quite different from the dark green of a grass snake, and yet many people have difficulty distinguishing the two. Adders have a dark zig-zag running along the back and a dark Vee on the back of the head. The point of the Vee is between the eyes. The patterning and the background colour become duller just before the snake sheds a skin. Adders also known as common vipers are found throughout Wales and are particularly common on heath land and on grassy cliff-tops and slopes, where they like to bask in open areas (including on footpaths). Unlike grass snakes, adders do not like wet places. They are our only venomous snakes, and although very poisonous an adder's bite rarely proves fatal for an adult. The diet of adders is very varied and includes voles and other small rodents, lizards, birds eggs, insects and snails. Like other reptiles, they hibernate under ground throughout the cold winter months, usually choosing the same place year after year. Adders have several enemies including foxes, badgers and some of the larger owls.
Adders are viviparous. The eggs develop and hatch in the body of the female adder. Typically ten baby adders, 16 - 18 cm long, are born in mid summer; they are able to reproduce when they are five years old. The life span of the adder is up to 15 years.

    The Half Adder
This chip is the "half-cousin" to the Full Adder Hewlett-Packard integrated circuit that features a complete snake (the "Full Adder"). The "Half Adder" is seen in the lower section of the photomicrograph in the pad ring. In digital logic design, the Half Adder and Full Adder are two fundamental circuits for performing addition of binary numbers. A full adder takes in three binary bits and produces two bits: sum and carry. The slightly simpler half adder takes in two bits and produces two bits. Officially, the chip is termed the Addchilada 32/64 Bit Floating Point Add/Sub math chip and was used in the venerable HP 1000 minicomputer. The chip was invented by HP Cupertino designers Fred Ware and Howard Shishido in 1979. Todd Johnson of Santa Cruz, California was kind enough to donate a wafer of these Silicon-On-Sapphire (SOS) chips to the Silicon Zoo. Paul Koning of Xedia Corporation has amused us with a nice little anecdote about the Adder snake: The waters of the Great Flood were receding, and Noah had beached his Ark. The animals were leaving, and he sent them off with the words: "Go forth and multiply."

Australian Snakes. Australia has many unique and strange inhabitants including the wildlife. Enclosed within this page are some that should be avoided. Most inland native Australian creatures are harmless to man, but the same cannot be said for the reptiles; there are some realy venomous fellows in this lot! The creatures shown in the photos below can easily and quickly paralise or kill an unsuspecting child or adult. These reptiles are best left alone or they will inflict their deadly dislike for humans without hesitation. Children should never be left unattended near any of these creaturs, they can strike without warning. Fierce Snake. Oxyuranus microlepidotus Said to be the world's most deadliest snake! Although it has existed in Australia for millions of years, the first live specimen was not captured until 1975. The Fierce snake's venom is extremely toxic and a small animal would die within seconds, its nervous system and heart instantly paralysed. Because of its late discovery, few facts are known about this snake's habits. Fortunately, the Fierce Snake only lives in an isolated area around where the South Australian, New South Wales and Queensland borders meet.
