A KID'S GUIDE TO ADHD by Jamie Crist, Ph.D. Introduction This article is written especially for kids ages 7-12 to help them understand what ADHD is, how it is treated, and how they can help themselves. While younger kids will benefit by having a parent or another older person read it to them, children ages 9-12 should be able to read this on their own. What is ADHD? ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is also sometimes called ADD for Attention Deficit Disorder. They are pretty much the same thing, though ADHD is the official name. If you are reading this article, chances are that you have ADHD or are at least wondering whether or not you might have it. ADHD is something that kids, teens, or adults can have. People with ADHD have a hard time paying attention, sitting still, or thinking about what they say or do before blurting something out or behaving in a certain way.

by Katherine West I believe that teachers have the ability to inspire our children even more than we do as parents do. For the simple reason that they are teaching them, creating the foundation on which they will build their academic careers and life's work. Statistics support this fact. In a popular psychological study, teachers were told that a child would struggle and have problems learning. That child did fail. Then teachers were told that this other student was very bright and that he or she had what it took to be a good student. This child succeeded. Both of the aforementioned children were of equal intelligence- an average I.Q. What does this tell us? This tells me that if a teacher expects a child to succeed then they will. My favorite teacher of all time was my English teacher in high school. She was one of the strictest teachers that I ever had. She accepted nothing less than excellence. I have found that if a teacher challenges us, we often rise to the occasion. Mrs. Brenda Neal was the person whom I can thank for my appreciation of the written word. She unveiled literary treasures, inspiring me to take pleasure in reading beautiful works of art. By exposing me to the works of Shakespeare, Dickens, and Homer, she introduced me to vibrant characters that resided in whimsical, far-off places. She brought the works to life in her classroom. No, they didn't sit in those old dusty books.

Most ADHD books rehash the same worn out theories and treatments. Instead, ADHD : A Path to Success offers a new and refreshing perspective on attention deficit disorder that makes sense with your own personal daily experience. ADHD : A Path to Success takes it out of the realm of medical mystery and psychobabble and describes a new, no drug, no diet, no nonsense, patented treatment technology. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is not a deficit, defect or neurological disorder. Rather, it is a highly refined, short-term coping skill that backfires in the long-run. Children adapt to unpleasant situations the same way adults do, by building emotional defenses. ADHD is a skilled defense that children develop against the unpleasant situations we put them in at home and school. Once the aversiveness of these situations and the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder type defenses are extinguished, attention improves, agitation and hyperactivity decreases, school and homework are much easier. Other approaches that treat these children are based on an adult's view of the problem. However, you can only help your child when you understand their experience of attention deficit disorder through their eyes. The engaging story of his personal struggle and conquest of

THE VITAL ROLE OF ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS FOR PREGNANT AND NURSING WOMEN Recently it has been discovered that the Omega-3 fats are necessary for the complete development of the human brain and nervous system during pregnancy and the first two years of life. The Omega-3 fat and its derivative, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), is so essential to a child’s development that if a mother and infant are deficient in it, the child’s nervous system and immune system may never fully develop, and it can cause a lifetime of unexplained emotional, learning (ADD/ADHD), and immune system disorders.

153. July Education Reporter -- Focus: Reading, Writing, ’Rithmetic, And Ritalin
Offers a challenging view of the so called 'disease' status of add and adhd.
http://www.eagleforum.org/educate/1996/july96/focus.html
FOCUS: Reading, Writing, ’Rithmetic, and Ritalin Can it be a disease if no X-ray, CT scan, blood test, laboratory analysis, MRI, or any other medical test can confirm its existence? Can it be a disease if diagnosis can be made by a non-physician checking any 8 of 14 items on a behavior checklist such as inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or short attention span? Yet, an estimated two million children (three times as many boys as girls) have been labeled with this disease and are taking a powerful drug to treat it. That's four times as many as in 1990. The disease is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and the most widely used drug to treat it is methylphenidate, known as Ritalin. A powerful stimulant, it juices up the central nervous system, takes effect in 30 minutes, and peters out in three to four hours. Ritalin is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance in the same category as cocaine, methadone and methamphetamine. In 1991 the U.S. Department of Education formally recognized ADHD as a handicap under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. After the Department directed all state education officers to ensure that local school districts establish procedures to screen and identify ADHD children and give them special educational and psychological services, generous funding suddenly began to flow.

Chances are that if you are a new parent to this site you probably aren't having a great parenting day.
Come in, familiarize yourself to our site, ask questions and read our stories.
We are a group of parents who are raising challenging children. Our kids have many different diagnoses, but all of them are oppositional and resistant to parenting.
We use many different methods and treatment plans with a variety of results. We have found that there isn't a "magic bullet," but we are always looking and supporting each other along this journey. We are parents who are committed to helping our children grow and flourish and survive their childhood.
It is our goal for our web site to be a "soft place to land for the battle-weary parent." You will be amazed at the number of suggestions offered and the amount of support given. We even manage to have a few laughs along the way! My advice is to take what you need, offer what you can, and leave the rest.
Please make sure you visit the recommended book section, as most of these books have been read by many parents who have found them to be extremely valuable. You can also have these shipped direct to your home from this web site.
