- IEPs and the IDEA (USA) Each public school child who receives special education and related services must have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Each IEP must be designed for one student and must be a truly individualized document. Home Parents Program News ... Seminars Parents and Teachers As a parent, you want your child to achieve his or her full potential. But all too often, sensory integration disorders like ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, and other, undiagnosed problems can hold your child back from success with Reading, Handwriting, and other areas of Academic Achievement. We understand your frustration. We also understand that many children with learning problems also experience some level of sensory integration difficulty. It has been reported that in many cases these problems can be helped effectively at home in as little as 15 minutes, twice a day. We can provide you some tools to help your child reach his or her full potential. Dr. Belgau has worked with many students and parents who have been frustrated. He knows that these problems do not just hold your children back from academic success: he understands first-hand the emotional toll, and the feelings of failure that these problems inflict on your child. Because The Learning Breakthrough Program strives to improve on a foundational level, it addresses a wide variety of problems. The program can not only help struggling children catch up, but can also help gifted children excel. We enable you to address the roots of processing problems, rather than just the symptoms. Our program can often provide relatively quick results at a very affordable price. If your child is under the care of a physician, we encourage you to consult with your doctor before beginning this program. . Feel free to provide any of our information to your physician or have him contact us.

The blockages can be so difficult to pinpoint that no-one is aware of the real problem. Consequently, the frustrated or withdrawn behaviour, which results is often blamed as the problem itself. http://www.dyslexia-add.org/
Since 1975, the goal of the Dyslexia Research Institute, Inc. has been to change the perception of learning differences, specifically in the area of dyslexia and attention deficit disorders (ADD). With proper recognition and intervention, dyslexics and individuals with ADD become successful individuals using their talents and skills to enrich our society. They may take their place alongside other dyslexics/ADDs, such as Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, and Nelson Rockefeller. Ten to fifteen percent of the US population has dyslexia, yet only five out of every one hundred dyslexics are recognized and receive assistance. Approximately 60% of individuals diagnosed with attention deficit disorders are also dyslexic, however, their learning and language differences are often unrecognized because only the behavioral aspects of ADD are addressed. Without the proper diagnosis and help, many of these dyslexics and ADD individuals are only functionally literate, and are part of the forty-four million adults with only the lowest level of literacy. This limits their ability to find jobs and function independently within their communities. The Dyslexia Research Institute mission is to change these statistics by providing appropriate identification and training.

49. Dyslexia Research Institute

http://www.dyslexia-add.org/issues.html
Ten to 15% of the US school population has dyslexia. Dyslexics have an inherited neurological difference, resulting in language, perceptual, processing, and attention/concentration differences. Yet only 5% of individuals with dyslexia are ever properly diagnosed and given appropriate help, so over 85% of adult illiterates are dyslexic. This lack of literacy limits their ability to become successful, productive adults, find jobs, or function independently within their communities. Yet, with the proper recognition and intervention, dyslexics become successful individuals using their talents and skills to enrich our society. Dyslexia is a language disability, not a reading disability, so not only does it affect the ability to learn to read, write, and spell by conventional methods, it affects the ability to communicate in more subtle ways. Dyslexics have processing, perceptual, and attention/concentration problems. The majority of ADD individuals are also dyslexic. Learning to read can be a problem for individuals with dyslexia or ADD.

The BYTE Fiasco These are two short essays, presented together for reasons that will be clear when you finish reading them. I wrote the following disquisition on DYSLEXIA as a contribution to a discussion group; it seems to have survived some criticism by people I respect. It's not really a stand-alone essay but it's close enough. The original topic was why dyslexia was not bred out of the human race (Greg Cochran is part of the discussion group). There had been some speculation on what advantage if any dyslexia might confer in a non-reading society. DYSLEXIA The first thing is to agree on what "dyslexia" "is". In our reading consulting work "dyslexic" means a child that the local public school could not teach to read. The local school is likely to be using some "modern" system of "whole language" instruction that does not involve systematic phonics and considers systematic instruction to be "drill and kill". (It would be amusing to see how well inability to do math correlates with the diagnosis of dyslexia; many schools no longer require the addition and multiplication tables to be memorized by rote, greatly slowing the arithmetical progress of the students; such schools tend also to non-systematic "reading" instruction, treating English as an ideographic language. That produces a lot more 'dyslexics' than do schools that use 'drill and kill' systematic phonics and 'sound it out' instruction.)
