    Adams, John (1735-1826)
U.S. President with an interest in science who pondered how to reconcile pluralism with his Calvinist beliefs. In 1756, he wrote: Astronomers will tell us . . . that not only all the Planets and Satellites in our Solar System, but all the unnumbered Worlds that revolve round the fixt Starrs are inhabited. . . . If this is the Case all Mankind are no more in comparison of the whole rational Creation of God, than a point to the Orbit of Saturn. Perhaps all these different Ranks of Rational Beings have in greater or less Degree, committed moral Wickedness. If so, I ask a Calvinist, whether he will subscribe to this lternitive, "either God almighty must assume the respective shapes of all these different Species, and suffer the Penalties of their Crimes, in their Stead, or else all these Being[s] must be consigned to everlasting Perdition?" Adams almost certainly discussed pluralism with his vice-president (later president), Thomas

“John Quincy Adams was a precocious child. He attended private schools in America and abroad when he traveled with his diplomat-father. He graduated from Harvard, became a lawyer, and wrote about politics. He served as a diplomat in Europe for three US Presidents. Through his childhood associations he became a linguist and well informed on many subjects. He was a capable secretary of state under US President Monroe. In fact, Adams was responsible for many of Monroe’s foreign accomplishments. He held several elected offices, but his independent actions separated him from his party. He barely won the presidency. The House of Representatives elected him because he did not have a plurality. He lost his bid for a second term, but he became a representative in Congress where he argued strongly for what he believed, no matter how controversial. In fact, he had a stroke debating an issue and died two days later.” On Line Lesson Plans: John Quincy Adams from DiscoverySchool.com

    Braintree, Massachusetts Early Years:
Adams grew up on a farm and was very athletic. He especially liked hunting, playing games, flying kites and shooting marbles. At 16 he went to Harvard, and after graduation, he taught school and studied law. His Presidency: Adams was the first president to occupy the White House, although it was unfinished. His decision to maintain peace with France when the U. S. was not strong enough to fight, and his signing of the Alien and Sedition Acts to stop foreign and American opposition to the government, made him so unpopular that he was defeated in the next election. In spite of all this, Adams was a courageous patriot. His Life: Learned and thoughtful, John Adams was more remarkable as a political philosopher than as a politician. "People and nations are forged in the fires of adversity," he said, doubtless thinking of his own as well as the American experience.

Retirement and Death Vice President and President The year following, 1788, Mr. Adams requested permission to resign his office, which, being granted, after an absence of between eight and nine years, he returned to his native country. The new government was, at that time, about going into operation. In the autumn of 1788, he was elected vice president of the United States, a situation which he filled, with reputation for eight years. On the retirement of General Washington from the presidency, in 1796, Mr. Adams was a candidate for that elevated station. At this time, two parties had been formed in the United States. At the head of one stood Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Adams, and at the head of the other stood Mr. Jefferson. After a close contest between these two parties, Mr. Adams was elected president, having received seventy-one of the electoral votes, and Mr. Jefferson sixty-eight. In March, 1797, these gentlemen entered upon their respective offices of president and vice president of the United States.

    Visiting John Adams' Grave
Here I am in Quincy, Massachusetts on September 12, 1991. I spent one leisurely week of a two week vacation with my wife four months pregnant with our first child driving the eastern seaboard collecting dead president pictures. By mid-afternoon of September 12, we had reached Quincy, Massachusetts (the "C" in Quincy is pronounced as a "Z"), where John Adams and his son, John Quincy , rest. We reached the Adams National Historic Site at roughly 4 PM, lollygagged in the apple orchard for too long, then made our way to the guest house where we told the National Park Service guides there that we would like to both tour the house and see the Adams crypt. The crypt is in the basement of the Unitarian Church, about six or eight blocks from the Adams house, and we were told that the crypts are not open to the public, and only by special permission of the church could we even see the church itself. And we had missed the final house tour of the day. Our schedule was loose, so we could have waited until morning, but we had planned to drive out of the city that day. So.... Undaunted, I somehow convinced the guides, without actually saying so, that I was writing a book, and their earlier reticence to help changed immediately. A guide was "assigned" to us, and she not only telephoned the rector of the Unitarian church at his house and arranged for him to meet us at the church to show us to the crypts, but she gave us a personal tour of the house. The outbuilding which served as Adams' library was particularly impressive. This is not shown to the general public, so if you ever have occasion to visit the Adams site, make sure to ask if they will show you the library.

    The Early Years
John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts to Abigail and John Adams. He witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill together with his mother at the age of 9. Adams spent much of his childhood in Europe, mostly in France while his father was serving as Minister. At the age of 15, the young John Quincy Adams served as Secretary to the Mission to Russia. On his return to the United States, Adams studied at Harvard. After his graduation, he studied law. President Washington appointed Adams Minister to the Netherlands in 1794, a position he held until 1797, when he became Minister to Prussia. In 1801, Adams returned to the United States and in 1802 was elected Massachusetts State Senator. In 1803, he was elected U.S. Senator. From 1809- 1814 Adams served as the first U.S. Minister of Russia. While there, he turned down an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1814 he became the head of the delegation charged with negotiating the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812. From 1815-1817, Adams served as Minister to Great Britain. From 1817-1825 he was Secretary of State in the Monroe administration. He was instrumental in improving relations with Great Britain. In addition, he was a strong supporter of the doctrine that became known as the Monroe Doctrine, which helped limit European involvement in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere.
