John Adams (1735 - 1826) was the second President of the United States of America. He was President from 1797 until 1801. His Vice-President was Thomas Jefferson . Adams belonged to the Federalist Party. John Adams was born in Quincy, Massachusetts , on October 30, 1735. His father was a farmer. Adams graduated from Harvard University in 1755, and went on to become a lawyer in Boston. He married Abigail Smith in 1764, and they eventually had five children. Adams was a delegate to both the First and Second Continental Congresses, and helped draft the Declaration of Independence. After the Revolution, in 1783, Adams went to France to sign the Treaty of Paris, and became the first US ambassador to Great Britain from 1785 to 1788 (this was a very difficult position, since the British were not pleased with the outcome of the war). In 1789, Adams was elected the first Vice-President of the US, serving two terms under President

As it was, events swiftly overtook him, and Adamswho, David McCullough writes, was "not a man of the world" and not fond of politicscame to greatness as the second president of the United States, and one of the most distinguished of a generation of revolutionary leaders. He found reason to dislike sectarian wrangling even more in the aftermath of war, when Federalist and anti-Federalist factions vied bitterly for power, introducing scandal into an administration beset by other difficultiesincluding pirates on the high seas, conflict with France and England, and all the public controversy attendant in building a nation. Overshadowed by the lustrous presidents Washington and Jefferson, who bracketed his tenure in office, Adams emerges from McCullough's brilliant biography as a truly heroic figurenot only for his significant role in the American Revolution but also for maintaining his personal integrity in its strife-filled aftermath. McCullough spends much of his narrative examining the troubled friendship between Adams and Jefferson, who had in common a love for books and ideas but differed on almost every other imaginable point. Reading his pages, it is easy to imagine the two as alter egos. (Strangely, both died on the same day, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.) But McCullough also considers Adams in his own light, and the portrait that emerges is altogether fascinating.

  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

Abigail Smith, 1764 CHILDREN: John Quincy, Thomas, Charles, Abby John Adams was born in a small New England village near Boston called Braintree. This village was settled by Pilgrims who had come to America from England in search of religious freedom. The young John Adams and his father often argued about how important it was to get an education. Young John often skipped school, and when his father asked him why, he told his father that all he wanted was to be a farmer. As he grew up, he realized that an education was important. He studied hard, then went on to college at Harvard. At Harvard he studied law, and upon his graduation he became a great lawyer. John Adams became famous for his strong opinion that everyone deserved a fair trial. He got national recognition in 1761 when, as a representative of the state of Massachusetts, he fought the decision that gave the British the right to search any house, ship, or shop at any time without permission of the owners. In the words of John Adams, "Then and there, the child Independence was born." Later that same year, he married his childhood sweetheart Abigail Smith. Abigail was an outspoken lady who was opposed to slavery and believed that women should get the same education as men. Abigail Smith Adams was the only First Lady to have both a husband and a son as President of the United States.

Quote The personal inconveniences to the members of the Senate and of the House of Representatives in leaving their families and private affairs at this season of the year are so obvious that I the more regret the extraordinary occasion which has rendered the convention of Congress indispensable. It is with extreme regret that I shall be obliged to turn your thoughts to other circumstances, which admonish us that some of these felicities may not be lasting. But if the tide of our prosperity is full and a reflux commencing, a vigilant circumspection becomes us, that we may meet our reverses with fortitude and extricate ourselves from their consequences with all the skill we possess and all the efforts in our power. In giving to Congress information of the state of the Union and recommending to their consideration such measures as appear to me to be necessary or expedient, according to my constitutional duty, the causes and the objects of the present extraordinary session will be explained. After the president of the United States received information that the French government had expressed serious discontents at some proceedings of the government of these states said to affect the interests of France, he thought it expedient to send to that country a new minister, fully instructed to enter on such amicable discussions and to give such candid explanations as might happily remove the discontents and suspicions of the French government and vindicate the conduct of the United States. For this purpose he selected from among his fellow citizens a character whose integrity, talents, experience, and services had placed him in the rank of the most esteemed and respected in the nation.
