Two Unitarian Presidents
John Adams, first of the four presidents who were Unitarians, was on-and-off friends with Thomas Jefferson, who had Unitarian leanings, but was not a member. Learned and thoughtful, John Adams was remarkable as a political philosopher and was one of the indispensable founders of our nation. Prior to serving as President, Adams was a delegate to the Continental Congress, a diplomat, and Vice President under George Washington. John Adams had studied for the ministry, but came to believe that government service would be more exciting. Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were life-long members of First Parish Church, Quincy, Mass. Their tombs stand in a crypt within the church, beside those of their wives, Abigail and Louisa Catherine.
John Quincy Adams was the only President who was the son of a President. (Until G W Bush) As a boy, his mother had told him that some day the state would rest upon his shoulders. It did not rest lightly. Never publicly popular, often reviled by his political enemies, he nevertheless ended his life in the sunshine of national esteem. The presidency was only one of his careers, sandwiched between being a successful diplomat and Secretary of State, and, after the interlude of being President, an equally successful tenure as a Congressman who opposed slavery.

This stirring book chronicles the parliamentary battle to bring "the peculiar institution" into the national debate, a battle that some historians have called "the Pearl Harbor of the slavery controversy." The campaign to make slavery officially and respectably debatable was waged by John Quincy Adams who spent nine years defying gags, accusations of treason, and assassination threats. In the end he made his case through a combination of cunning and sheer endurance. Telling this story with a brilliant command of detail, Arguing About Slavery endows history with majestic sweep, heroism, and moral weight. Adams, John Quincy
Adams Documents
(b. July 11, 1767, Braintree, Mass.d. Feb. 23, 1848, Washington, D.C.), eldest son of Pres. John Adams and sixth president of the United States (1825-29). In his pre-presidential years he was one of America's greatest diplomats (formulating, among other things, what came to be called the Monroe Doctrine); in his post-presidential years (as U.S. congressman, 1831-48) he conducted a consistent and often dramatic fight against the expansion of slavery.
Early life and career.
In 1781, at the age of 14, he accompanied Francis Washington's administration as it faced the war that broke out between France and England in 1793. These articles were brought to President Washington's attention and resulted in Adams' appointment as U.S. minister to the Netherlands in May 1794. The Hague was then the best diplomatic listening post in Europe for the war of the first coalition against Revolutionary France. Young Adams' official dispatches to the Secretary of State and his informal letters to his father, who was now the vice president, kept the government well informed of the diplomatic activities and wars of the distressed Continent and the danger of becoming involved in the European vortex. These letters were also read by President Washington: some of Adams' phrases, in fact, appeared in Washington's "Farewell Address" of 1796. During the absence of the regular minister at London, Thomas Pinckney, Adams transacted public business with the British Foreign Office relating to exchange of ratifications of the Jay Treaty of 1794 between the United States and Great Britain. In 1796 Washington, who came to regard young Adams as the ablest officer in the foreign service, appointed him minister to Portugal, but before his departure his father, John

Library of Congress John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829) and lifetime diarist. His father, John Adams , helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was the second President of the United States (1797-1801). John Quincy was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts in 1767. His early education, in mathematics, languages, and the classics, was by way of his father. He graduated from Harvard College in 1787 and studied law in Newburyport, Massachusetts under the tutelage of Theophilus Parsons . In 1790 he began the practice of law in Boston. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1802, served in various diplomatic posts and was President James Monroe's Secretary of State (1817-1825), in the opinion of many, one of the best to ever serve in that post. Adams was an abolitionist and opposed slavery in the newly admitted states. After completing his Presidency, Adams served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848. John Quincy Adams
