Foreword
Following the Perl Cookbook (by Tom Christiansen and Nathan Torkington, published by O'Reilly) spirit, the PLEAC Project aims to gather fans of programming, in order to implement the solutions in other programming languages. In this document, you'll find an implementation of the Solutions of the Perl Cookbook in the Ada language. Ada requires data items to be declared in a declarative region at the beginning of a code block, before the "begin" reserved word. Many of the PLEAC subsections are implemented in their own unnamed code block to define local variables, functions, and procedures close to their usage, as would be done in Perl. Next Strings

131. SmallAda
A compiler/interpreter for a part of the ada language, namely the Pascal subset plus the ada tasking support. It is not intended ever to be a full ada compiler, rather a vehicle for teaching, learning, and experimenting with concurrent programming. The compiler is quite fast, producing Pcode which is then interpreted by the interpreter. (ZIP)

Beyond Ada: The First Paranoid Programming Language
This article originally appeared in Teletype , the magazine of the University of York Computer Society, in early 1988. Stunned at the bulk of Ada, which a few of us braver souls were teaching ourselves strictly against the wishes of the Pascal-loving Department, the concept of a language so huge and awful that it was utterly impossible to write a meaningful program, and with such bizarre constructs that nobody would want to use it, evolved. And all before Ada 9X escaped into the real world... This is fairly typical of the longer articles which used to appear in the magazine at the time. Thanks are due (alphabetically) to Steve Gallimore, Pete Hart, Chris Sampson, Graham Taylor and Gary Whitehead.
Introduction
With the major defence crises of the 1980's - Oliver North, Irangate, etc., it is becoming increasingly obvious that Ada simply lacks the necessary facilities for generating truly paranoid programs. What is needed is a language which is not merely user-indifferent, but totally user-scared: in short, a Paranoid Programming Language. Who could meet the challenge? IBM? No, too neurotic already. DEC? No, VMS was far too paranoid. It fell eventually to your humble editor and his motley crew of hackers to design, implement, debug, y'know, the

Providing a decent overview of how to construct graphical interfaces with Visual Basic 6, Sams' Teach Yourself Visual Basic 6 in 24 Hours quickly teaches the novice Visual Basic programmer how to write simple applications that work. Readers should keep in mind, though, that this book addresses Visual Basic from a beginner's perspective: you'll want another book to help you with more complicated aspects of the language. Fortunately, the authors don't get bogged down in documenting every last m...

Information for New Ada95 Programmers
On this page I collect some of the information I found useful as an Ada newcomer. May be you will find it helpful to get started with Ada. [Warning: this page is not actively maintained at the moment and might be out of date.]
What is so interesting about Ada?
There are hundreds of different computer languages available, and around two dozen of those are more widely known and supported. However of those, only six are really widely supported on many different platforms by a range of high-quality development tools and are ISO standardized (or about to be) and can therefore be trusted for a long-term investment of work: C , C++, Ada, Pascal, Java, Fortran, COBOL. Fortran is optimized for number crunching and COBOL is a legacy language for systems that caused Y2K troubles. I am very experienced in C and quite experienced in Pascal, but both languages are now rather old and lack support for modern software engineering techniques (object-oriented programming, exception handling, multi-threading, templates, etc.). Other newer languages like C# and D look promising for the future, but there is no support infrastructure available for them yet.
