http://www.birthsource.com/proarticlefile/proarticle28.html
Finger Acupressure It is a well-established concept that stimulating the skin activates the large diameter "touch" fibers. The "touch" message travels faster to the brain than the competitive and smaller pain fibers in labor. Because the human brain is only capable of a certain amount of cutaneous stimuli, the gate to the brain is closed during touch stimulation and the amount of pain sensation felt is inhibited. This Gate Control Theory is valuable in learning how acupressure works. Massage and acupressure may be also be linked to decreasing pain sensations through endorphin production. Endorphins are opiate-like substances that occur naturally and influence the transmission of impulses. The presence of endorphins at the junction of nerve cells may result in a decrease in pain sensation. Women have varying amounts of endorphin production during labor, however women with an epidural may have decreased amounts of endorphins. Thus, if the epidural ceases to function, the woman may not have her natural ability to raise her pain tolerance. She may be stagnate at her pain threshold. While no official evidence exists regarding acupressure and inducing/stimulating labor, many perinatal specialists (midwives, physicians, childbirth educators and doulas) confirm the relationship between acupressure points and increased uterine contractions - an alternative to pharmacologic induction or augmentation with pitocin. When applying finger acupressure, instruct the client to press against the desired point on the skin. Massage in a small circular motion. Continue for 1-5 minutes.

Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine technique based on the same ideas as acupuncture . It involves placing physical pressure, by hand, elbow, or with the aid of various devices, on different pressure points on the surface of the body (which may be far distant from the symptom, related by what is called the meridian system) to bring about relief through greater balance and circulation of energies in the body ( Qi Acupressure This article is part of the branches of CAM series. While some practitioners believe that first hints of acupressure or reflexology have been found in ancient Indian texts (the first mention of qi in Chinese writings dates back to approx. 1200 B.C. in the Shang dynasty oracle bones ), possibly the earliest evidence of use of the meridian system for health purposes has been found in Europe, of all places. How You Can Use Acupressure, the Japanese Finger Pressure Method, as a Tool in Dieting QualityBooks.com Believe it or not, your fingers can be vital tools in your war against extra weight. By means of Japanese acupressure, the finger pressure method, you can shed up to seven pounds a week.
Although this sounds too good to be true, it's not. After learning this simple, drug-free method of hunger reduction, you'll be able to eat what you like. And you'll lose weight because you'll find you don't want to eat huge amounts any more.
The basis of acupressure is that there are key points on your body which are in direct relation to the hunger center of your brain. By simply massaging these points with your fingertips when you get the binging urge, you'll stop these urges from reaching your brain.
The key pressure point for dulling appetite is midway between your upper lip and nose. Before each meal, place thumb inside lip and index finger outside lip and massage 10 seconds. Apply moderate pressure; massage the pressure point up and down.
If you find your appetite perks up when you are under a great deal of stress or perhaps when you're depressed, you will need to learn a couple of other acupressure techniques.

Acupressure is an ancient healing art which uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin and stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. Based on the same principles of Acupuncture , with no drug-induced side effects, acupressure is an excellent way to complement conventional medical care and to promote health and wellness. It helps to prevent or relieve a wide range of conditions such as Musculo-Skeletal dysfunctions, physical pains, headaches, insomnia, menstrual problems and psychosomatic stress related disorders. Acupuncture is internationally recognized and respected as a powerful healing technique. It is part of a complete system of medicine which has been practised in China for many thousands of years. Complementary Medicine Introduction Acupressure involves pressure points on the body with fingers or hands to alter the internal flow of a supposed vital force or energy called chi (pronounced "chee"), strengthening it, calming it or removing a blockage of the flow. Acupressure is one of a number of treatment methods regularly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, a system of healthcare that originated in China thousands of years ago, which is still widely practiced in Asian countries today. According to TCM, acupressure points are aligned along 14 body meridians, or pathways. Twelve of the meridians are bilateral, that is, identical versions of them (with the same sets of points) exist on both sides of the body. The other two are unilateral, running along the midline of the body. The 14 meridians do not correspond to any known physiological processes or anatomical structures in the body, such as nerves or blood vessels. Nevertheless, some well-controlled studies suggest that acupressure can be effective for a number of health problems, including nausea, pain and stroke-related weakness. A single point may be pressed for relief from a particular symptom or condition, or to promote overall well-being of the body. A series of points can be worked on in a specific order
