Physics CO67, Acoustics Fall Semester 2003 Dr. T. Burkhardt, office Barton Hall A327, tel. 215 204-8633, email tburk@temple.edu This syllabus is also on the web. Go to www.temple.edu/physics and click on “course web sites.” The course meets MWF 11:40-12:30 in Barton Hall BA130. The three exams (see below) will be given in a larger room, Anderson Hall AL17. Any student with special needs due to a disability should contact the instructor as soon as possible. The course begins with a four-week introduction to the fundamental physics of sound waves. With this as a basis, we will then consider human hearing, musical scales and harmony, the production of sound by musical instruments, the human voice and speech sounds, architectural acoustics, and the electronic reproduction of sound. No mathematics beyond elementary arithmetic will be required. The textbook for the course is Musical Acoustics , 3d edition, by D. E. Hall. Several copies are on reserve in the Physics Library, Barton Hall, Room BA209. To encourage regular studying and class attendance, there may be a few short unannounced quizzes. The quiz questions will consider topics covered in the preceding 5 class meetings. The quizzes will contribute no more than 4 % of the final grade. The remainder of the final grade will be based on two midterm exams (Wed. Oct. 8, Wed. Nov. 12) and a final exam (Mon. Dec. 15, 11:00 A.M.). The three exams will cover Chapters 1-5, 6-10, and 11-16 of the textbook, respectively. Each of the three exams will contribute equally to the final grade.

Acoustics Acoustics is the science of sound. Acoustical scientists help to increase the clarity of music at concert halls, improve hearing aids, and reduce noise from highways and aircraft. Dating back to World War II, federally supported research on long-range underwater communication introduced sonar and ultrasound techniques which have become ubiquitous. Within industrial settings, robots use sonar for positioning themselves and pinpointing objects. Doctors now examine almost every pregnancy in the United States with ultrasound.

Acoustics and Sound
As one of the oldest fields of physics, acoustics may be considered "finished" by many. However, it is still an active research area with new applications of sound technologies being discovered all the time. Acoustics covers the study of and the physics of Sound, Waves, Sonic Booms, Musical Instruments, Vibrations and Speakers, among many other topics.

Didjeridu acoustics
This page gives a brief introduction to the acoustics of the didjeridu (sometimes spelt didgeridoo, and known as yidaki or yiraki in the language of the Yolngu, one of the peoples of Northern Australia, where the instrument originated). The didjeridu/yidaki is a remarkable instrument because of the wide variety of timbres that it produces. Further, it is of more general interest because it is the most evident example of the interaction between a wind instrument and the vocal tract of the player. These interactions are important to good playing of any wind instrument, but to the didjeridu they are central, so this page concentrates on discussion them. We also use this page to report the results of a research project, so some preliminary scientific papers are linked below. The project involves five researchers from three institutions: Alex Tarnopolsky Neville Fletcher Lloyd Hollenberg John Smith [1] and Joe Wolfe The University of New South Wales The Australian National University and [3] The University of Melbourne Lloyd Hollenberg (left), physicist and didjeridu player, managing to play the didjeridu while having the acoustic properties of his vocal tract measured. In the sound clip below, Lloyd demonstrates several didjeridu effects produced by changes in the shape of the vocal tract configuration (moving tongue and jaw) and by vocalisations (vocal fold vibration) on top of a drone with a fundamental at 71 Hz (~C#2). Ben Lange (right), is a student and didjeridu player who is also working on this project.
