OL311: Database Programming using JDBC Technology
Description:
This course explores Java's database connectivity package, JDBC 2.0. Topics include JDBC elements, the steps used to access a database with JDBC, data retrieval issues, and some of the advanced features that will gain more support with future releases of the JDBC API. Participants will use the JDBC interface to provide a call-level API for SQL-based database applications. This hands-on course is composed of comprehensive lectures, practical project illustrations, and independent programming sessions. The session's exercises include a realistic database application using modular Java architecture where the participant produces specific reports based on data in the database.
Objectives:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Apply the nine-step process for accessing a database through the use of JDBC technology. Develop code using the JDBC 2.0 API for gaining access to a database within a Java application.

Lab Exercises to accompany "Modern Software Development in .NET using Visual Basic" A Webcast Series for the VB6 Programmer (Feb-May 2004) Joe Hummel, PhD Lab 7: Databases Part 2, Database Programming with ADO.NET These lab exercises accompany the 2004 webcast series "Modern Software Development in .NET using Visual Basic." This particular lab is based on the materials from Lecture 7, "Databases 2: Database Programming with ADO.NET." For more information on the series, or to download materials, see http://www.lakeforest.edu/~hummel/webcasts.htm To begin work on the lab, download the lab files: http://www.lakeforest.edu/~hummel/webcasts/2004/6-10/3-23-2004-Databases2-Lab.zip . Extract the lab exercise, and you'll find a single folder that contains an HTML-based description (this file), a Work sub-directory for storing your own files, and a Solution sub-directory containing a complete solution to the lab. What software do you need? First, you need to be running a server-like version of the Windows operating system, which means Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP (Home or Pro), or Windows 2003. Second, you need to install Visual Studio .NET (any version of VS .NET is fine). The files were created using Visual Studio .NET 2002, and so by default the files will open in VS .NET 2002. If you are using a newer version, you'll be asked to convert the files over, which is fine. Overview : we're going to return to the Customer application that we developed in the earlier exercises (Labs 1 - 5). In particular, we're going to rewrite the data tier to read/write a database instead of the text file "Customers.txt". Both a Microsoft Access database and a script to create a SQL Server database are provided; feel free to use a different database if you like, you'll just need to create the appropriate Sales database and Customers table (see the provided .sql file for the DDL).

Object-Oriented Database Programming in Java
Presenter R. K. Ege Duration Half day Level Intermediate Day Monday afternoon Location (Room) room E-302 (ESSI) Typical Java applications involve access to a database system. Database systems store data according to their type system. It is therefore necessary to convert Java objects as they are stored in a database, and to re-convert them when they are read. Ideally, this should be done behind the scenes by a support package. This tutorial explores the issues involved: which database technologies are available (legacy vs. relational vs. object-oriented) and which access mechanisms are best suited. The tutorial has 2 parts: (1) accessing a relational database using the Java Database Connectivity (JBDC) package, and (2) storing Java objects in a object-oriented database directly. Audience :
Software professionals who are interested in learning how to access databases from the Java programming language Required experience :
Software developers with working knowledge of Java and some exposure to relational database technology Presenter's profile :
Raimund K. Ege
