Database Publishing on the Web
There are many ways to make data stored in databases available on the Web. The discussion below describes a locally-written development tool called DBToolBox. The current version is 2.0. Once the connections are created, Web users can interact directly with the database. They can search and display dynamic reports that are defined, or insert and update records through HTML forms. In these cases, departmental staff are encouraged to store databases and associated files on an account on the Princeton University shared server called ntfileshare . Students can store their databases on Storacle . The database is made accessible through a OIT-supported Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) running on a Windows 2000 server. DBToolBox provides the tools to connect the database to the Web. After reading the introduction below, continue exploring by learning how a Summer Jobs Survey database Web application was created using DBToolBox.
Introduction to DBToolBox
DBToolBox is a Web-based application which enables development of database-driven Web applications. No Web or database programming skills are needed in order to use it. DBToolBox "discovers" the layout of the databases and provides a point-and-click, form-based interface for creating dynamic reports of data, as well as forms to accept data on the Web. It can also create an Access database from a form that has already been designed, perhaps using Microsoft FrontPage.

Databases are the heart and soul of many of the recent enterprise applications and it is very essential to pay special attention to database programming. I've seen in many occasions where database programming is overlooked, thinking that it's something easy and can be done by anyone. This is wrong. For a better performing database you need a real DBA and a specialist database programmer, let it be Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, DB2 or whatever! If you don't use database specialists during your development cycle, database often ends up becoming the performance bottleneck. I decided to write this article, to put together some of the database programming best practices, so that my fellow DBAs and database developers can benefit!

Windows CE Database Programming Using ADO
by Marc Robards Dilemma: Your boss just came into your office and told you he wants to join in on this whole "Wireless Revolution" thing. He wants you to develop a database app (no problem, you think) that will tie into the company's centralized database (ok, still no big deal), and it needs to run under Windows CE (doh!!) because he just ordered 500 CE units for your company's sales force and they'll be here in a week. The uncertainty creeps in. You're heard of Windows CE, of course, but you've never actually written anything for it. You remember hearing it's scaled down, but it's still Windows, right? How hard can it be to write a simple database app for it? You flash your boss a smile and in your most confident programmer-guru voice, you tell him he's picked the right person for the job. As he walks out you wonder if you've signed your one-way ticket to the unemployment line because you just promised Rome built in one day. Never fear, true believer! Microsoft has made programming data access on CE devices as easy as it is on the desktop! Well...almost as easy. The good news is that ADO is available for all current versions of Windows CE. The bad news is that like all things CE, there are limits to what can be done and hoops to jump through to get it all working. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning, shall we?

Here in this example, I'll demonstrate the use of ADO.NET through a webservice and make you realise that its not a monster replacement to ADO 2.5 after all ....though it is monstrous in terms of its features and the power it exudes :). I have included a database along with the zip called LIS(Location Information Services) which has two tables viz. statemaster(all states in the US) and countymaster( counties and cities for a particular state). This webservice accepts the abbreviation of a US state and returns the counties/cities within that state.
