12. YALE STUDENT ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS
Yale Student academic competitions (YSAC) is proud to announce the Yale BulldogHigh School Academic Tournament 11, to be held at Yale University in New Haven
http://www.yale.edu/cbowl/BHSATlet.htm
November 26, 2001 Dear Academic Team Advisor: Yale Student Academic Competitions (YSAC) is proud to announce the Yale Bulldog High School Academic Tournament 11 , to be held at Yale University in New Haven, CT on Saturday, January 19, 2002. The BHSAT is one of the largest tournaments in the Northeast and one of the nation’s oldest college-run tournaments. Last year saw 72 teams from nine states and the District of Columbia in attendance. BHSAT11 is open to all schools. The format, which will depend on the number of teams registered, will guarantee each team six to seven matches, followed by playoffs in a format to be determined. Matches will follow a tossup/bonus format, as explained in the rules below. Registration will be from 8:15–8:45 am. The first match will start at 9:30 am after a brief introduction and rules meeting. The round robin should end by 4:30 pm, with all competition finished by 7:00 pm. Top teams and individuals will receive prizes. The top four teams at BHSAT earn automatic bids to the PACE National Championships at George Washington University (Washington, DC) next June. The entrance fee will be $90 for the first team from each school, $80 for the second team, and $70 for each additional team. We are also offering a $10 discount for each working buzzer system and a $10 discount for each moderator or scorekeeper, with a minimum charge of $40. The field will be limited at most to 72 teams, and no school may initially register more than three teams. If your school wishes to enter more than three teams, they will automatically be placed on a waiting list and admitted after January 9, 2002 on a first-come, first-served basis.

After your questions are played in competition, they can be used in practices and scrimmages by schools that bought the tournament's questions and did not play in the tournament. Your questions also can (and frequently do) become part of FTP or World Wide Web sites, and thereby gain a *very* wide audience. Clearly, the questions you write now can have an effect on play for years to come. If that effect is to be positive, your questions must be well-written, regardless the format of play or subject matter of the questions.

    1998 Distinguished Advertising Educator
Francis Rutland Lacher of Fashion Institute of Technology is Named AAF 1998 Distinguished Advertising Educator
    Francis Rutland Lacher
was presented with the American Advertising Federation's 1998 Distinguished Advertising Educator Award on June 19 during the AAF National Conference in Minneapolis.
Lacher worked in the ad industry for more than two decades as a copywriter, agency vice president and consultant. In 1972, she joined the faculty of the then-junior college, Fashion Institute of Technology, where she spearheaded the effort to change FIT to a four-year college.
Lacher was elected chair of the academic division and has been a member of the academic committee since its inception 25 years ago. She also has served as AAF's District 2 academic board member for eight years and as a trustee of the Ad Club of New York for four years. As a member of Advertising Women of New York, Lacher introduced the annual FIT-AWNY joint sponsorship of the College Career Conference, which attracts top-level ad professionals and students from around the country.
Lacher was chosen from a nationwide field of nominees by the 39-member AAF Academic Division. The award was created in 1987 to recognize educators who not only have advanced the knowledge, professional performance and standards within the industry but who also have given outstanding service to advertising students.

    Funding Academic Competition Programs
by Tom Michael Version 1.2.2 Last updated Friday, July 21, 2000 02:19:50 PM Introduction Successful student organizations and academic competition teams require two essential components: a cadre of enthusiastic participants, and an adequate financial base. This document will focus on the money. Although it is based on ideas and observations made during my two decades of association with academic competition and academia in general, I recognize that the vast diversity of institutions makes a "one size fits all" approach to funding a futile endeavor. Hopefully, the reader will be able to pick and choose from among the ideas presented to come up with a funding strategy that is the best fit for any particular situation. While this document is written primarily as help for newer programs, more established programs may still find useful ideas as well. The information presented is also far from the last word on the subject, and suggestions, comments, addenda, and dissenting viewpoints are welcomed and encouraged The Catch-22 of funding is that teams successful on the playing field can often parlay that success, by a variety of routes, into improved funding; but that for many programs improved funding is the necessary ingredient to take a team to the next level of success. Like many other endeavors, the keys to securing adequate funding involve planning, creativity, and hard work on a number of fronts. While reaching an adequate level of funding for the program you desire may take a few years, I am convinced that such a level can be readily achieved through persistent work. Although one can occasionally hear stories of how programs have stumbled on to sources of adequate funding by shear luck, a close examination of well-funded programs will indicate that those programs got that way and stay that way through an investment of time and effort.
