Nothing is more heart-warming than the sound of a child's laughter. And no other commodity is more precious to our nation's future than the well-being of America's children including the children of the U.S. Virgin Islands. ABC's Children First campaign is a joint public service effort of the ABC Television Network and Channel 8 and ABC's affiliated stations. Now in its seventh year, this initiative is designed to raise awareness of the challenges facing children today. Our goal is simple-to inspire activism on the behalf of children. Channel 8'd Children First delivers positive, action-oriented messages that stress what each adult can do as a parent, neighbor, community member, local business or civic organization to help children overcome the obstacles that inhibit their growth and learning potential. The bottom line is that there is something each of us can do to ensure a better future for our nation's children. We also promote the accomplishments of our youth through positive efforts like the Channel 8 School Art Book Cover contest. Coalition rejects ABC cries of poor
Published 25 February 1996 in The Sunday Mail T he federal coalition yesterday rejected concern that the ABC had genuine financial problems in implementing new programs to replace axed state editions of The 7.30 Report. The coalition's comment follows the ABC's disclosure yesterday that budgetary restraints had caused the corporation to cut its new Brisbane-produced Australian Correspondent program from one hour to around 30 minutes. It is understood the program will go to air in late April. The ABC's national head of news and current affairs, Paul Williams, said he wanted to assess pilots of Australian Correspondent before deciding its timeslot and its eventual duration. "There is no doubt I am worried about the budget for ABC television news and current affairs," he said. Australian Correspondent's funding woes follows similar concerns about Stateline, another new ABC program which was operating on a shoe-string budget of just $700 per week in Queensland. The national 7.30 Report, Australian Correspondent, and Stateline were three programs ABC managing director Brian Johns announced last year after a community backlash against the axing of the seven state 7.30 Reports.

The man who
would heal ABC Steve McPherson must unite a network divided
ABC's challenge has never been to come up with TV shows people would watch. It can do that, as it proves season after season.
Where it stumbles is in defining itself as a network in the crisp, smart ways of NBC, CBS and Fox.
ABC is two things, a TV network competing for viewers and a division of Disney under Michael Eisner, where the emphasis is on family entertainment, and the fourth-ranked network is very much torn between those two roles.
This dividephrased as the question what are we, really?has been pervasive, evident in ABC's management structure, where multiple people with like-sounding titles have overlapping responsibilities. Who's in charge? Well, everyone and no one.
But the divide is also captured in telling snippets of conversation, as when ousted ABC Entertainment Television group chairman Lloyd Braun and entertainment president Susan Lyne were on the phone with reporters.
The barbing went back and forth, each subtly blaming the other or someone else for this or that failed show. Clearly there was no warmth between them, and you could almost hear the raspberries being blown.

Programming and Languages
Computer programmers develop programs, definable as sequences of instructions, telling how to operate the computer. Without programs, computer hardware is virtually useless. Operating systems process input/output requests, run applications, and connect the individual computer to a network. Applications do specific tasks such as word processing, payrolls creation, mechanic design, and more. Programs must be written in detail, aptly named a programming language. Elementary processes are low-level languages, extensive capabilities in programs require a high-level language. Programming consists of requirements definitions, design specification, coding, testing, and maintenance. Each step of the program must be calculated carefully to perform that particular function. Below are links to information about programming and languages.

Which grinch stole Aladdin? By Sean Elder May 2, 2000 T ime Warner cable managed to do what Scheherezade's husband could not: It stifled the storyteller. From New York to California, Time Warner Cable subscribers hooked on ABC's much-anticipated "Arabian Nights," which debuted Sunday night to be continued Monday, awoke to find ABC no longer available. New York affiliate WABC ran what looked like a storm warning across the bottom of the screen on Sunday evening, urging viewers to call Time Warner Cable and complain. At 12:01 Monday morning, ABC programming was replaced with what looked like a test pattern, bearing a message from Time Warner. "Disney has taken ABC away from you," read the lament seen in the homes of 3.5 million Time Warner Cable subscribers. "We offered a proposal that would have kept ABC for our customers. Disney said no." The decision was the result of months of feuding between the media giants. It comes at the beginning of May sweeps week the moment when networks traditionally pull out all the stops in competition for market share. This is not the first time that Time Warner has squelched programming: For months it could not find room for the Fox News Channel in New York, and it is prepared to play a similar game of chicken with NBC over coverage of this year's Olympics. All of this comes, oddly, as the federal government is considering the approval of the company's merger with AOL.

The Program Prevention Officers versus the Rest of the World
(Address for IPA Conference, 31 March 2001) Richard Fidler Thank you for inviting me to this forum. Although I'm an ABC sympathiser, I don't subscribe to current orthodox Left thinking on the National Broadcaster. As Tony Moore has said, the Left feel the same way about the ABC as the Right does about the Queen. The panicky, apocalyptic tone reminds me of nothing so much as the kind of bizarre hysterics I heard from Monarchists during the referendum. Here's my background: I've worked on and off for the ABC over the last 12 years as a writer/presenter and as someone purporting to be a comedian. In between I've worked briefly for the Nine network, the BBC, Channel 4 in the UK and Australian Commercial radio. Today I'd like to just briefly relate some of my own experiences with the ABC, make some comparisons with commercial media culture and make some broad suggestions. I'm currently making a 13 part series for the ABC. This show is a co-production with an independent production company so I'm not in the place on a day-to-day basis. I'm finding the current management to be much more supportive than the previous lot ... but then I would say that-they've given me a job haven't they?

Endowed Funds The Association of Brethren Caregivers is grateful to the donors of the following endowments. Contributions to support ABC can be made to any of these endowments.
Stephen O. Mason Endowment
Newly created in September 2003, the Stephen O. Mason endowment fund was established by the Association of Brethren Caregivers' Board to honor Steve Mason as out-going executive director for the organization. Mason resigned as executive director in June and will leave the position at the end of the year. The interest from this endowed fund, which was established with gifts from ABC Board members, will be used to support the ongoing mission of the Association of Brethren Caregivers through direct support of its management team.
William H. and Mirian W. Cable Health and Welfare Endowment This endowed fund was established in 1982 with the Bethany Hospital Fund and successor organizations in response to the creation of the paid staff position of a Health and Welfare Consultant by the 1978 Annual Conference. The primary purpose of the fund was to expand the consultant's services to the Homes and Hospitals Association beyond the specified one-third time designated by Annual Conference. In recognition that the consultant position would change over time, a secondary use for the fund was established so that it would further support the health and welfare services related to Brethren homes and hospitals.

Content and commerce on the ABC
By Jill Hickson The Senate inquiry into possible commercial influence over ABC television programming appears to have largely evaded the larger issue of the commercialisation of the ABC by the federal Labor government. The story began on September 18, when Channel Nine's Sunday program revealed that ABC programs have been receiving funding by corporations and businesses which were featured on the programs they funded. Sunday interviewed ABC journalist Tracee Hutchison, who worked on the program Great Ideas. She said she had been told that her report on the Alcan aluminium company had been paid for by the company, which expected a positive view. Eric Campbell, a former reporter with the ABC's program Holiday who now works for the 7.30 Report, said that journalists on the program were left in no doubt their future employment depended on sponsors being happy with the final product. According to the Greens (WA) Senator Christabel Chamarette, who joined forces with the Democrats and the Liberal/National opposition to establish the Senate inquiry, a number of issues in regard to the ABC are cause for concern.

ABC Nightline Pre-emption by Sinclair Broadcast Group
The ABC Television Network announced on Tuesday that the Friday, April 30 edition of "Nightline" will consist entirely of Ted Koppel reading aloud the names of U.S. servicemen and women killed in action in Iraq. Despite the denials by a spokeswoman for the show, the action appears to be motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq.
There is no organization that holds the members of our military and those soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in service of our country in higher regard than Sinclair Broadcast Group. While Sinclair would support an honest effort to honor the memory of these brave soldiers, we do not believe that is what "Nightline" is doing. Rather, Mr. Koppel and "Nightline" are hiding behind this so-called tribute in an effort to highlight only one aspect of the war effort and in doing so to influence public opinion against the military action in Iraq. Based on published reports, we are aware of the spouse of one soldier who died in Iraq who opposes the reading of her husband's name to oppose our military action. We suspect she is not alone in this viewpoint. As a result, we have decided to preempt the broadcast of "Nightline' this Friday on each of our stations which air ABC programming.
We understand that our decision in this matter may be questioned by some. Before you judge our decision, however, we would ask that you first question Mr. Koppel as to why he chose to read the names of 523 troops killed in combat in Iraq, rather than the names of the thousands of private citizens killed in terrorist attacks since and including the events of September 11, 2001. In his answer, we believe you will find the real motivation behind his action scheduled for this Friday. Unfortunately, we may never know for sure because Mr. Koppel has refused repeated requests from Sinclair's News Central news organization to comment on this Friday's program.

ABC back on the air across the country
Staff and wire reports
May 3, 2000 Time Warner called a sudden truce Tuesday in the corporate brawl that deprived 3.5 million cable TV customers of ABC for more than 27 hours, restoring the channel in time for viewers to see ãWho Wants to Be a Millionaire.ä
The cable company and the Walt Disney Co., ABCâs parent, didnât settle their differences, but set a new deadline of July 15 for their negotiations over compen-sation for cable channels, said Bob Barlow, desert cities divisional president of Time Warner Cable.
ãHopefully weâll reach an agreement in the next two months,ä Barlow said.
The deal came in time for Coachella Valley Time Warner customers to watch the 4 p.m. news on KABC-TV Channel 7 out of Los Angeles.
KESQ, the desertâs ABC affiliate on Channel 3, was never taken off the air.
Customers reacted angrily when Time Warner systems in seven cities, including New York, Houston and Los Angeles, stopped airing ABC programs at 12:01 a.m. Monday. The blackout started a run on rabbit-ear antennas and satellite TV systems.
The compromise came in the middle of a news conference called by Time Warner Cable chairman Joseph Collins. He was offering Disney a six-month extension to continue airing ABCâs signal, without resolving the disputed issue of cable compensation.

A Short Introduction to the ABC Language
Also available in Japanese NEW Two new implementations are now available: an improved PC version, and precompiled binaries for Redhat Linux. ABC is an interactive programming language and environment for personal computing, originally intended as a good replacement for BASIC. It was designed by first doing a task analysis of the programming task. ABC is easy to learn (an hour or so for someone who has already programmed), and yet easy to use. Originally intended as a language for beginners, it has evolved into a powerful tool for beginners and experts alike. Here is an example function words to collect the set of all words in a document: Some features of the language:
  • a powerful collection of only 5 data types that can easily be combined strong typing, yet without declarations no limitations (such as max int), apart from sheer exhaustion of memory refinements to support top-down programming nesting by indentation programs typically one fourth or one fifth the size of the equivalent Pascal or C.
Some features of the environment:
  • no need for files: procedures and functions and global variables remain after logging out one consistent face is shown to the user at all times, whether executing commands, editing, or entering input to a program
