Foreword by Gilbert Sorrentino
Afterword by Paul Zukofsky Best known as one of the most significant poets of the 20th century, Louis Zukofsky was also an accomplished writer of fiction, all of which is collected here for the first time. Included is his only novel, Little (1970), which John Leonard in the New York Times called "an odd, playful, thoroughly charming novel about a child prodigy." (The novel is very autobiographical and Zukofsky's son, violin virtuoso, Paul Zukofsky, has written an afterword for this edition.) Also included are the four stories comprising It Was , published in 1961 in a limited edition and virtually unobtainable for years. The stories range from the brief title story in which a writer struggles with the composition of the perfect sentence to the novella-length "Ferdinand," which Guy Davenport praised in the New York Times Book Review as "a finely tuned story from a sensibility of extraordinary range and skill."

11. Recursive Structures In The Poetry Of Wallace Stevens And Louis Zukofsky
Abstract of an article by Jonathan Ivry, Stanford University, presented at the Society for Science and Literature's 1998 conference Thinking the Brain and Beyond.
http://web.sls.ufl.edu/abstracts/ivry.html
Recursive Structures in the Poetry of Wallace Stevens and Louis Zukofsky
Jonathan Ivry, Stanford University
In My paper explores how recursive structures can help elucidate certain practices in the poetry of Wallace Stevens and Louis Zukofsky. In late Stevens, subjectivity is no longer a unified, metaphysical "self," but rather is re-conceptualized as caught inside paradoxical "strange loops." "Self" is now the by-product of a mechanistic structure in which an imagining mind imagines itself imagining itself ad infinitum. Stevens's "supreme fiction" becomes his term for an unreachable, idealized "meta"-poetics, in which the "recursive self" might be replaced by an articulation of self-presence: "I have not but I am and as I am, I am." Louis Zukofsky expresses his ideal state of poetry in terms adopted from calculus; poetics is a definite integral with lower limit speech and upper limit music. Zukofsky recognizes that not only is subjectivity caught up in mechanistic recursive loops, but that language is similarly trapped in circles of referentiality. The ideal poetics can transcend these "strange loops" only by aspiring to a condition of music, in which self and language are no longer referential and expressive but rather performative and self-identical. Louis Zukofsky Papers
Introduction
The papers of Louis Zukofsky (1928-1969) were purchased by Kansas State University Libraries in April 1984. Louis Zukofsky was an American poet, critic and translator. He was associated in the "objectivist" movement of the early 1930's and was thought of as a disciple of William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound. The papers are housed in two document boxes. They are divided into four series: 1) Correspondence (1928-1969), 2) Literary works (1931, n.d.), 3) Printed material (1930-1933) and 4) Miscellaneous. The bulk of the collection contains correspondence from Zukofsky to Rene Taupin discussing mutual friends and documenting his career. The collection also offers insight into what life was like in the 1930's for a poet, economically and socially. The Louis Zukofsky Papers are identified as accession number PC 1994.07 and are available at the University Archives. Processing of the papers was completed by Cindy Von Elling in September 1994.

On "Mantis" An Interview with Louis Zukofsky by L.S. Dembo Q. I wonder whether you'd mind also commenting on "Mantis," and the poem interpreting it [ All, 1923-1958, pp. 73-80]. You seem to be concerned here with the sestina as the ideal expression of the "battle of diverse thoughts" or associations arising in the poet’s mind upon his encounter with a mantis. A. I never said it was the ideal form of expression. You have to be careful with this sapless guy, you know. Actually, I was trying to explain why I use the sestina, and there are a lot of old forms used. I suppose there are two types of natures. One is aware of the two-hundred-year-old oak, and it's still alive and it's going to have some use to him; the other one is going to say cut it down and build a supermarket. I'm not inclined to be the latter, nor do I want to imitate a traditional form, but if that thing has lasted for two hundred years and has some merit in it, it is possible I can use it and somehow in transferring it into words—as I said in " Aleatorical indeterminate "—make something new of it. And the same for the form of the sestina. Musicians have done that with fugues; there are some today who try to do counterpoint or traditional harmony, but most won’t even talk in that terminology. Ultimately it’ll come down to silence or sound, words or no words. And where are you going to get them? Where does language come from? Are you just going to make it out of a mouthful of air? Sometimes, but most of the time you don’t; there’s a world already there; it might be a poetic form that is still useful.
