ZOLA, EMILE EDOUARD CHARLES ANTOINE.
ZOLAZOLKIEWSKI IOOI On the morning of the 2gth of September 1902 Zola was found dead in the bedroom of his Paris house, having been accidentally asphyxiated by the fumes from a defective flue. He received a public funeral, at which Captain Dreyfus was present. Anatole France delivered an impassioned oration at the grave. At the time of his death Zola had just completed a novel, Vente, dealing with the incidents of the Dreyfus trial. A sequel, Justice, had been planned, but not executed. After a life of constant struggle and an obloquy which never relaxed, the sensational close of Zola's career was the signal for an extraordinary burst of eulogy. The verdict of posterity will probably be kinder than the first, and less unmeasured than the second. Zola's literary position would have more than qualified him for the French Academy.1 He was several times a candidate in vain. (F. T. M.) Emile Zola
Zola, Emile ) French writer and art critic; school friend of Manet was introduced to Zola in February 1866. Three months later Zola wrote an enthusiastic assay in defense of Manet’s work ( , May 1866), which he later expanded into a long article ( , January 1867). Manet painted this portrait as an expression of his thanks, and it was shown at the 1868 Salon. In 1870-1903 Zola wrote and published his novel series about the Rougon-Macquart family, including 1880 Nana and 1886 The Masterpiece , a critical characterization of Impressionism.
Nana was a character in Emile Zola’s novel Nana . Manet asked Henriette Hauser, a well-known grande cocotte, to pose for him. Henriette Hauser was kept by the Prince of Orange, and so was nicknamed ‘Citron’. Nana was a Parisian courtesan, and the novel is about her life.

Emile Zola
E scritor francés y fundador del movimiento naturalista. Zola nació en París, el 2 de abril de 1840, hijo de un ingeniero civil italiano. Tras la muerte de su padre, la familia vivió en la pobreza. Su primer trabajo fue el de empleado en una editorial. A partir de 1865 se ganó la vida escribiendo poemas, relatos y crítica de arte y literatura. Su primera novela importante, Thérèse Raquin (1867), es un detallado estudio psicológico del asesinato y la pasión. Más tarde, inspirado por los experimentos científicos sobre la herencia y el entorno, Zola decidió escribir una novela que ahondara en las profundidades de todos los aspectos de la vida humana, que documentara los males sociales, al margen de cualquier sensibilidad política. Asignó a esta nueva escuela de ficción literaria el nombre de naturalismo y escribió una serie de veinte novelas entre 1871 y 1893, bajo el título genérico de Les Rougon-Macquart , con el fin de ilustrar sus teorías a través de una saga familiar. Tras una ardua investigación produjo un sorprendente y completo retrato de la vida francesa, especialmente la parisina, de finales del siglo XIX. Sin embargo, fue calificado de obsceno y criticado por exagerar la criminalidad y el comportamiento a menudo patológico de las clases más desfavorecidas. Algunos de los libros que se ocupan de las cinco generaciones de la familia Rougon-Macquart, alcanzaron una gran popularidad. Entre las novelas de esta serie destacan La taberna (1877), un estudio sobre el alcoholismo;
