Yevgeny Yevtushenko was born in Zima, Irkutsk, on 18th July, 1933. He was the descendant of a family exiled to Siberia. Influenced by the work of Vladimir Mayakovsky and Sergei Yesenin , he began writing poetry and achieved fame with his long narrative poem, Stantsiya Zima His poem, Baby Yar (1961) dealt with the Nazi massacre of 34,000 Ukrainian Jews . Some critics saw this poem as an attack on Soviet anti-Semitism. In 1962 the official party newspaper published his poem Heirs of Stalin . The poem describes the burial of Stalin but at the end suggests that the problems are not yet over: "Grimly clenching his embalmed fists, just pretending to be dead, he watched from inside. He was scheming. Had merely dozed off. And I, appealing to our government, petition them to double, and treble, the sentries guarding the slab, and stop Stalin from ever rising again."

Yevgeny Yevtushenko
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Yevtushenko (born July 18 ) is a Russian poet , whose work contains scathing attacks on the Russian bureaucracy as a legacy of Stalin Born in Irkutsk to a family of Ukrainian exiles, he moved to Moscow as a boy and attended the Gorky Institute of Literature. His first important poem was "Zima Junction," published in 1956. In 1961 he produced " Babi Yar ," in which he attacked Soviet indifference to the Nazi massacre of the Jews of Kiev in September . Despite its immense popularity, the poem was not printed in Russia until 1984. In the same year that he released Babi Yar, he also published "The Heirs of Stalin," claiming that the legacy of Stalinism still dominated the country. Published originally in Pravda , the poem was only republished a quarter of a century later, under the more liberal leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev . In 1963, Yevtushenko, already an international literary sensation, was banned from traveling outside the Soviet Union; the ban was lifted in 1965. In the 1970s, Yevtushenko was closely associated with dissident writer

http://www.expectingrain.com/dok/who/y/yevtushenkoyevgeny.html
Yevtushenko, Yevgeny
Yevtushenko, the best-known Russian poet of the post-Stalin generation, has lots in common with Dylan. Both are fighters, risk-takers and noted innovators of rhyme. Both their mothers begged them to stop writing poetry; neither obeyed. Both have run afoul of the orthodoxies that claimed them as spokesmen. Each has made a career of opening windows in the walls of secular materialism. Dylan name-checked "the melodies of Yevtushenko" on the sleeve of The Times They Are A-Changin', and he toured the Soviet Union at Yevtushenko's invitation in 1985.

Thank you so much for printing the text of this poem. I was in a youth hostel near Nagasaki when we heard the news about Kent State over the loudspeaker. Our Japanese friends had to confirm the horrible news was really true. I was looking for this poem to put in a piece that I am writing about that era, and could not find it in print. It was published by City Lights, but is not in an existing volume, I don't think.
eelinson@tosft.,net
I first read this poem in my 8th grade English class. I have looked for it for a long time. Thank you! It touched me then and again now.
Meba61@aol.com
I was wondering if anyone can find the poem "Freedom to Kill". It is about Robert Kennedy's (Brother to JFK) assasination. I have searched the web for it but have not come across it. I heard about this poem in the book SHADOW PLAY by William Klaber and Philip H. Melauson. It starts of "The color of the Statue of Liberty grows even more deathly pale..." Email me if you find it.
P.S. Support our troops if you still want poetry.
