The Old English words faery, fairy, faerie, fay, fey, fae, come from the Old French words fée and féerie. Throughout this story we will use the spelling "faery." Faery includes one or all of the supernatural beings of the magic land of Faery. And yes, we know that fairy is the more usual modern spelling, but faery is also correct, and the Irish poet William Butler Yeats, who is quoted below, uses that spelling, and we're not about to argue with him about the use of the English language, so there!

http://www.who2.com/williambutleryeats.html
WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS Poet/Playwright William Butler Yeats was a towering figure in English literature at the turn of the 20th Century, not the least because of his poems and plays. Combining an immense knowledge of Irish folklore and Gaelic verse with a self-conscious flamboyance, Yeats was largely responsible for convincing the rest of the world that those Irish guys sure can write, and that they have a heck of a national identity as well. He was elected one of the first senators of the Irish Free State (1922-28), and awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923.

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was born in Dublin. His father was a lawyer and a well-known portrait painter. Yeats was educated in London and in Dublin, but he spent his summers in the west of Ireland in the family's summer house at Connaught. The young Yeats was very much part of the in London; at the same time he was active in societies that attempted an Irish literary revival. His first volume of verse appeared in 1887, but in his earlier period his dramatic production outweighed his poetry both in bulk and in import. Together with Lady Gregory he founded the Irish Theatre, which was to become the Abbey Theatre, and served as its chief playwright until the movement was joined by John Synge. His plays usually treat Irish legends; they also reflect his fascination with mysticism and spiritualism. The Countess Cathleen The Land of Heart's Desire Cathleen ni Houlihan The King's Threshold (1904), and Deirdre (1907) are among the best known.
After 1910, Yeats's dramatic art took a sharp turn toward a highly poetical, static, and esoteric style. His later plays were written for small audiences; they experiment with masks, dance, and music, and were profoundly influenced by the Japanese Noh plays. Although a convinced patriot, Yeats deplored the hatred and the bigotry of the Nationalist movement, and his poetry is full of moving protests against it. He was appointed to the Irish Senate in 1922. Yeats is one of the few writers whose greatest works were written after the award of the Nobel Prize. Whereas he received the Prize chiefly for his dramatic works, his significance today rests on his lyric achievement. His poetry, especially the volumes

Glossary entry for
Yeats, William Butler
William Butler Yeats (June 13, 1865 - January 28, 1939) celebrated Irish poet and nationalist, was born in Dublin, and educated in London and Dublin. While studying at the School of Art in Dublin he developed an interest in mystic religion and the supernatural. He helped to found the Irish Literary Society, and with the help of Lady Gregory and others, co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre (later the Irish National Theatre Society) in 1899. His wife's interest in automatic writing exercised a profound effect on his life and work. Yeats received the 1923 Nobel Prize in literature (see http://nobelprizes.com/ One of Yeats' longer works was entitled "A Vision" (with a Van reference in "Rave On"), which has been called "a completely obscure work about which there is hardly any literary criticism because as with Finnegans Wake, it is barely written in English" Van previously recorded a song called "Crazy Jane on God" (based on the Yeats poem of the same name) for the A Sense of Wonder album, but the Yeats estate wouldn't allow the song to be included (only classic settings of Yeats poems were allowed at the time). "Crazy Jane On God" was replaced on that album by "If You Only Knew", however it went out on the test/promo albums (vinyl), so there are copies around.

March 1999 Classical Poet: William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
By: Roberto Quintos , Contributing Writer
One of Ireland's finest writers, William Butler Yeats served a long apprenticeship in the arts before his genius was fully developed. He did some of his greatest work after he was 50 years old.
Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 13, 1865, the eldest son of an artist. Although the family soon moved to London, the children spent much time with their grandparents in County Sligo in northwestern Ireland. The scenery and folklore of this region greatly influenced Yeats's work. For a while he studied art, but during the 1890s he became active in London's literary life and helped found the Rhymers' Club.
Yeats's early work was not especially Irish. Soon, however, he began to look to the ancient rituals and pagan beliefs of the land for his artistic inspiration. He tried to merge this interest with his aristocratic tastes to create an original Irish poetry and to establish his own identity.
In 1896 Yeats met Lady Gregory, an aristocrat and playwright who shared his interest in Ireland's past, especially in its folklore. In 1899 they formed a literary society that was the predecessor of the Abbey Theatre. Among his plays were 'The Countess Cathleen' (1892) and 'Cathleen ni Houlihan' (1902), with Maud Gonne originating the title role. In 1899 he had proposed to her, but she refused to marry him. He later proposed to her daughter, who also refused. A free Ireland was the object of the actress' passion, and Yeats's love for her kindled his interest in the country's political struggles. From 1922 until 1928 he was a senator in the Dail Eireann, or Irish parliament.

    Die Seeinsel von Innisfree
    Ich werde mich jetzt erheben und nach Innisfree gehen,
    Dort eine kleine Hütte bauen, aus Lehm und Geflecht gemacht;
    Neun Reihen Bohnen werde ich dort haben, einen Korb für die Honigbiene,
    Und allein werde ich dort leben in bienenlauter Lichtung. Und ich werde dort etwas Frieden haben, denn der Friede sinkt langsam herab
    Von den Schleiern des Morgens zu dem Ort, an dem die Grille singt;
    Die Mitternacht ist dort ganz Schimmer, der Mittag violettes Glühen
    Und der Abend voller Hänflingschwingen. Ich werde mich jetzt erheben und gehen, denn immer, bei Nacht und Tag,
    Höre ich das Wasser des Sees leise ans Ufer schlagen;
    Während ich auf dem Fahrweg stehe oder auf grauem Pflaster,
    Höre ich es tief im Herzensinnern. The Lake Isle of Innisfree
    Wer geht mit Fergus?
    Wer wird jetzt mit Fergus fahren,
    Den gewobenen Schatten des tiefen Waldes durchdringen Und am ebenen Ufer tanzen?

Yeats received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Between the Celtic visions of THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN (1889) and the intellectual, often obscure poetry of the 1930s, Yeats produced a tremendous amount of works. In his early career Yeats studied William Blake 's poems, Emanuel Swedenborg 's writings and other visionaries. Later he expressed his disillusionment with the reality of his native country. Central theme in Yeats's poems is Ireland, its bitter history, folklore, and contemporary public life. Once out of nature I shall never take

    But such a form as Grecian goldsmith make
    Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
