This site is devoted to the history of Crimea. Here we have added the article on Crimea from the great 11th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica published in 1910. It obviously is dated now, but actually gives a better flavor of what Crimea was like in the 19th century, not long after the Crimean War, than a recent article would. Crimea We are adding the encyclopedia articles on individual topics such as Bospor, Chersonesus, Scythia, Khazars, and the like. We will show selected photos taken during visits to Sevastopol and surrounding region in 1992, 1993, and 1997. For convenience we have divided the material into the subject categories listed below.

Xenophon's Socrates

Laws
In the fifth century BC the Pythagorean Empedocles of Acragas wrote two poems, On Nature and Purifications , about the middle of the fifth century BC. He saw the universe as shifting between Love and Strife and composed of the elements of fire, air, water, and earth. With Love comes concord and joy; Aristotle interpreted Love as the cause of good and Strife as the cause of bad. Aristotle also said that he had been a champion of freedom and was averse to all rules. Others said that Empedocles declined the kingship offered to him, because he preferred to live frugally. When a tyrant insisted that all the guests drink wine or have it poured over their heads, Empedocles the next day accused the host and master of revels; this led to their condemnation and execution. Thus began his political career; it was argued that he must have been both wealthy and democratic, because he broke up the assembly of a thousand three years after it was set up. Late in his life the descendants of his enemies opposed his return to Agrigentum; so he went to the Peloponnesus, where he died. Leucippus founded the atom theory of natural philosophy refined by Democritus, who also taught that the cheerful person eager for justice and right actions is strong and free of care, while those who do not care about justice and right find everything joyless and in memory are afraid and reproach themselves. Happiness, said Democritus, is not found in gold or cattle but in the soul. For Democritus the goal of action is tranquillity, which is not the same as pleasure but a state of well-being in which the soul is calm, strong and undisturbed by fear, superstition, and other feelings.

1914 to 1919 A Medical Officer's diary and narrative of the First World War by Travis Hampson MC edited by Travis Philip Davies, 1999-2001 Editor's Note This wordprocessed text is a copy of a hand written book which was complied by my grandfather Travis Hampson at Chirk in North Wales in 1951. This book includes transcribed entries from a notebook diary that TH kept from 4 August 1914 to 4 September 1915. I have used italics here to show the explanatory notes added by TH in 1951, together with his record of the period September 1915 to February 1919, which I suspect was compiled from memory and miscellaneous notes. The 1951 book includes a number of photos, diagrams and original documents which I hope to publish on the web eventually. TPD, Feb 2001. ( xenophon@ukonline.co.uk FOREWORD The writing of this account of my experiences has come about through the finding of my old pocket diary, which I had carried about with me and in which I had jotted down some of our doings while serving with the BEF from August 6 th 1914 to February 19 th 1919. In the earlier part it is almost from day-to-day and word-for-word what I wrote then.

Xenophon: Anabasis, or March Up Country
Xenophon the Athenian was born 431 B.C. He was a pupil of Socrates. He marched with the Spartans, and was exiled from Athens. Sparta gave him land and property in Scillus, where he lived for many years before having to move once more, to settle in Corinth. He died in 354 B.C. The Anabasis is his story of the march to Persia to aid Cyrus, who enlisted Greek help to try and take the throne from Artaxerxes, and the ensuing return of the Greeks, in which Xenophon played a leading role. This occurred between 401 B.C. and March 399 B.C. Contents Xenophon Anabasis BOOK I Darius and Parysatis had two sons: the elder was named Artaxerxes, and the younger Cyrus. Now, as Darius lay sick and felt that the end of life drew near, he wished both his sons to be with him. The elder, as it chanced, was already there, but Cyrus he must needs send for from the province over which he had made him satrap, having appointed him general moreover of all the forces that muster in the plain of the Castolus. Thus Cyrus went up, taking with him Tissaphernes as his friend, and accompanied also by a body of Hellenes, three hundred heavy armed men, under the command of Xenias the Parrhasian[1]. [1] Parrhasia, a district and town in the south-west of Arcadia.

Xenophon:
On Men and Women
from Oikonomikos , c. 370 BCE
"She was not yet fifteen years old when she came to me, and up to that time she had lived in leading-strings, seeing, hearing and saying as little as possible. If when she came she knew no more than how, when given wool, to turn out a cloak, and had seen only how the spinning is given out to the maids, is not that as much as could be expected? For in control of her appetite, Socrates, she had been excellently trained... "Thus your duty will be to remain indoors and send out those servants whose work is outside, and superintend those who are to work indoors, and watch over so much as is to be kept in store, and take care that the sum laid by for a year be not spent in a month. And when wool is brought to you, you must see that cloaks are made for those that want them. You must see too that the dry corn is in good condition for making food. Mmmm, sassafras... One of the advantages of being a home owner is that all things are possible, including massively foolish enterprises like (f'r'instance) planting lots of difficult-to-maintain greenery. I'm currently on vacation in Seattle visiting Tante Laney and Uncle Norm. Uncle Norm has a small forest in his back yard (with as many trees as he has ham radio antennae, i.e. A LOT, but I digress). His recent battle against the dreaded Tent Worms has re-ignited personal interest in similar small-scale forestry, on both my and my father's properties. Dad's apple and pear orchard is in need of some serious spraying, so my brother, the No Name Reverend, and I are going out there the weekend after next to spray and fertilize and nitrogenate, i.e. with ammonia salts genereated as the metabolic by-product of massive alcohol consumption (y'all are welcome to help us with the nitrogenation, just give me a call or shoot me an email if you want to meet us there). The apples and pears grown there have a crunchy, sweet, spicy taste I've not experienced elsewhere. Much to my consternation, the tent worms like those trees as much as us kids do. When Uncle Norm heard I was trying to grow seedlings from the apple cores, he suggested that I instead try grafting branches from Dad's trees into some of my own, because (apparently) apple seeds could be pollinated by other trees to produce varieties of apples not quite like what grows on Dad's trees.
