NOTES:
  • Sept. 2001 - February 2002: I'm currently in the US, doing research in Computer Graphics at Mississippi State University.
  • March 16 - March 25, 1999: I visited New York City and took a lot of photos of sites related to Malcolm X. Among them are the Masjid El Hajj Malik El Shabazz (Malcolm X Avenue and 116th Street), corner of Malcolm X Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Audubon Ballroom, and Malcolm's and Betty's grave at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY
  • Lots of material displayed on this site has been copied by others for use on their sites without my approval! I strongly disapprove of this! I have invested lots of time and work. If you want to use material displayed on this site, please contact me first!
  • Thanks to all who have left feedback. Special thanks to those who have provided additional material or who have continued to motivate me.
Since hearing the name "Malcolm X" for the first time around 1988 in a rap song, I have been interested in him, his life and the changes he went through. Like Betty Shabazz, his wife, once said in J.H. Clark "Malcolm X - The man and his time", people who start to get interested in Malcolm soon get very possessive of him...
I can't help myself, but I can't go to a library without searching for information on Malcolm. Like many people, his autobiography fascinated me and made me gather more and more information.

Malcolm Little, the son of an African American Baptist preacher, Earl Little, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on 19th May, 1925. Malcolm's mother, Louise Little, was born in the West Indies. Her mother was black but her father was a white man.
Earl Little was a member of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and a supporter of Marcus Garvey . This got him into trouble with the Ku Klux Klan and after the family were threatened they moved to Lansing, Michigan. Little continued to make speeches in favour of UNIA and in 1929 the family house was burned down by members of the Black Legion.
In 1931 Little was found dead by a streetcar railway track. Although no one was convicted of the crime it was generally believed that Little had been murdered by the Black Legionnaires. Malcolm's mother never recovered from her husband's death and in 1937 was sent to the State Mental Hospital at Kalamazoo, where she stayed for the next twenty-six years.

MALCOLM X
Date of publication: 11/18/1992 For cast, rating and other information, (click here) By Roger Ebert
Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" is one of the great screen biographies, celebrating the whole sweep of an American life that began in sorrow and bottomed out on the streets and in prison before its hero reinvented himself. Watching the film, I understood more clearly how we do have the power to change our own lives, how fate doesn't deal all of the cards. The film is inspirational and educational - and it is also entertaining, as movies must be before they can be anything else.
Its hero was born Malcolm Little. His father was a minister who preached the beliefs of Marcus Garvey, the African-American leader who taught that white America would never accept black people and that their best hope lay in returning to Africa. Years later, Malcolm would also become a minister and teach a variation on this theme, but first he had to go through a series of identities and conversions and hard lessons of life. Victimized by violence
His father was murdered, probably by the Klan, which had earlier burned down the family house. His mother was unable to support her children, and Malcolm was parceled out to a foster home. He was the brightest student in his classes but was steered away from ambitious career choices by white teachers who told him that, as a Negro, he should look for something where he could "work with his hands." One of his early jobs was as a Pullman porter, and then, in Harlem, he became a numbers runner and small-time gangster.

MALCOLM X
Malcolm X (El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz) (1925-1965)
In the late 1950s and 1960s, while Martin Luther King, Jr. rose to national prominence professing nonviolent direct action and interracial organizing, Malcolm X became a leader in the Nation of Islam advocating armed self-defense and the rejection of white allies. Upon leaving the Nation of Islam in 1964, however, Malcolm's ideology shifted to a unified, coalition-oriented struggle for black advancement. While King and Malcolm continued to be at odds over the role of nonviolence in the movement, Malcolm met with other civil rights organizations in the South and repeatedly tried to work with King. Although King and Malcolm X never worked together, Malcolm's ideology directly influenced the southern civil rights movement after his 1965 death with the emergence of Black Power. Malcolm was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska on 19 May 1925. Both his parents were activists in the Universal Negro Improvement Association established by Marcus Garvey. His father, a Georgia-born itinerant Baptist preacher, encountered considerable racial harassment because of his black nationalist views. He moved the family several times before settling in East Lansing, Michigan, where Malcolm spent his childhood. In 1931 Malcolm's father was run over by a streetcar and died. Police concluded that the death was accidental, but Malcolm suspected that he had been murdered by a local white supremacist group. In January 1939, when Malcolm was thirteen, his mother was declared legally insane and committed to a Michigan mental asylum. Malcolm spent the rest of his childhood in foster homes and reform schools.

Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz )
Black Nationalist Malcolm X was one of the most fiery and controversial people of the 20th century. Alex Haley , Malcolm asserted that his father may have been killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan. His mother, stricken by the death of her husband and the demands of providing for the family, was committed to a mental institution. Leaving school after the eighth grade, Malcolm made his way to New York, working for a time as a waiter at Smalls Paradise in Harlem. Malcolm began selling and using drugs, turned to burglary, and, in 1946, was sentenced to a ten-year prison term on burglary charges. While in prison Malcolm became acquainted with the Black Muslim sect, headed by Elijah Muhammad , and was quickly converted. Following his parole in 1952, he soon became an outspoken defender of Muslim doctrines, accepting the basic argument that evil was an inherent characteristic of the "white man's Christian world." Unlike Muhammad, Malcolm sought publicity, making provocative and inflammatory statements to predominantly white civic groups and college campus audiences. Branding white people "devils," he spoke bitterly of a philosophy of vengeance and "an eye for an eye." When, in 1963, he characterized the Kennedy assassination as a case of "chickens coming home to roost," he was suspended from the Black Muslim movement by Elijah Muhammad.
