    Introduction
John Wyndham July 10 March 11 ) was the pen name used by the apocalyptically oriented British science fiction writer John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris . In his earlier writings, he used various combinations of his names, such as John Benyon or Lucas Parkes . In one example, The Outward Urge , he actually used both the names "John Wyndham" and "Lucas Parkes", pretending to be two collaborating authors. His book The Day of the Triffids was possibly the origin of the style of British science fiction described as the "cosy catastrophe": a genre in which everyone is killed except for a handful of middle-class survivors, who from the ashes of civilisation secure for themselves a Saville Row wardrobe and a sporty roadster or two. This was his most famous book and gave the word "triffid" to the English language, though several of his other books are proving to be equally durable.

    John Wyndham
John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris (aka John Wyndham) (10 July 1903 - 11 March 1969)
    Overview
Wyndham is one of the few Science Fiction authors which found early acceptance among non-SF readers. Although he began publishing stories in 1931. His rise to prominance happened after WWII when his apocolyptic outlook echoed the fears of many. Starting with The Day of the Triffids (1951), Wyndham continued where H.G. Wells left off. However, Wyndham didn't just rehash a disaster motif, he reached down into the psyche of the day to criticize the seeming lack of social change. His characters often confront more of a mindless reaction in their fellow humans than any external danger. Wyndham had a string of hits that had many similarities including the novels: The Kraken Wakes The Chrysalids The Midwich Cuckoos Trouble with Lichen (1960) and the short story collections: Jizzle Tales of Gooseflesh and Laughter The Seeds of Time Critics have concentrated on The Day of the Triffids The Kraken Wakes and The Midwich Cockoos . IMHO, this is because of the sales success of these books and the fact that both

    What's up with that?
Eleven-year-old Matthew begins talking to himself. His parents think that he has an imaginary friend (his sister did, and it was traumatic for the family), but he begins asking precocious questions about topics like physics. One day he saves his sister from drowning and becomes a celebrity; three days before that, he didn't know how to swim. One of his teachers enters his work, without permission, in a young artists' contest. His parents take him to a psychiatrist who dismisses Chocky (Matthew's "friend") as the manifestation of various subconscious conflicts. Chocky then vanishes.
    Who is this writer?
noms de plume ) is better-known for The Midwich Cuckoos and the amazing Rebirth (Jefferson Airplane's apocalyptic Crown of Creation nicked its lyrics – without credit, of course – from that novel). He attained more "respectability," especially in the United Kingdom, than do most SF writers. Brian Aldiss refers to Wyndham as a master of "cozy catastrophe:" a genre designed to play on middle-class anxiety disorders, in which the world comes to an end but nobody you care about really gets hurt. Clute and Nicholls pick up on this theme, and are more critical of Wyndham than of just about any of the bazillion or so authors in their magisterial encyclopedia. I don't know what that is about; he may not be the most profound writer who ever lived, but he's far from the worst, and there is a persistent tone of anger in the books of his I've read that I wouldn't call "cozy."

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback John Wyndham (1903-1969) English science-fiction writer, who gained fame with his catastrophe novels The Day of the Triffids The Kraken Wakes (1953), and The Chrysalids (1955). The central theme in Wyndham's major works is the struggle for survival in extreme situations. His heroes are often ordinary people, who try to sustain civilized values, when the normal social system has collapsed. The famous American writer Stephen King has called Wyndham "perhaps the best writer of science fiction that England has ever produced". "The way I came to miss the end of the world - well, the end of the world I had known for close on thirty years - was sheer accident: like a lot of survival, when you come to think of it. In the nature of things a good many somebodies are always in hospital, and the law of averages had picked on me to be one of them a week or so before. It might just as easily have been the week before that-in which case I´d not be writing now: I´d not be here at all." (from The Day of the Triffids John Wyndham was born John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris in the village of Knowle, in Warwickshire. His father, George Beynon Harris, was a barrister. Gertrude Parkes, Wyndham's mother, was the daughter of an ironmaster. Untill 1911, he lived in Edgbaston, Birmingham. When Wyndham was eight, his parents separated. Wyndham and his brother, Vivian Beynon Harris, who also became a writer, moved with their mother from place to place. However, their childhood was not unhappy; "we loved our mother and each other and we were as close as it is possible for a family to be," recalled Vivian Beynon Harris later.

EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE The Long and Wyndham Road Sue looks at John Wyndham's recent centenary, and finds that thanks in no small part to the additional medium of television and film, the Triffids at least still haunt us. W hat does the name John Wyndham call to mind to you, the avid Science Fiction reader and viewer? When asking a twenty-something librarian for a copy of 'The Day Of The Triffids' that had de-materialised she had no idea who or what I was talking about but happily I don't think she is typical. Thanks in no small part to the additional medium of television and film, the Triffids, at least still haunt us. Every time Alan Titchmarsh encounters a wild garden before its dramatic makeover, the word ‘Triffid’ to conjure up a deadly invasive plant, hovers unspoken in all our minds. Following the chance discovery of a sad-looking paperback of 'The Chrysalids' this summer, I found that John Wyndham was born on July 10th 1903 and I had recently missed his centenary. Not only that he was a Midlander, born in Knowle and living for his first 11 years in Edgbaston, making him an almost Brummie like me. Further digging revealed that although there were three paperback versions available of 'The Day Of The Triffids' available on the Penguin website, of the anniversary there was no mention.
