Wyatt, Sir Thomas Wyatt, Sir Thomas, , English poet and statesman, father of Sir Thomas Wyatt. He served in various capacities under Henry VIII and was knighted in 1536. It is generally agreed he had been the lover of Anne Boleyn before her marriage to the king. Greatly influenced by the works of the Italian love poets, Wyatt produced the first group of sonnets in English, modeled chiefly after Petrarch. Besides sonnets, he wrote lyrics, rondeaus, satires, and a paraphrase of the penitential psalms. None of his poems appeared in his lifetime. Ninety-six, however, were published in Tottel's Miscellany (1557), an important early anthology. See his collected poems edited by K. Muir (1949). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

Selected Poems of Sir Thomas Wyatt
There Was Never Nothing More Me Pained
There was never nothing more me pained,
Nor nothing more me moved,
As when my sweetheart her complained
That ever she me loved.
Alas the while!
With piteous look she said and sighed:
"Alas, what aileth me
To love and set my wealth so light
On him that loveth not me?
Alas the while!
"Was I not well void of all pain,
When that nothing me grieved?
And now with sorrows I must complain,
And cannot be relieved.
Alas the while!
"My restful nights and joyful days
Since I began to love
Be take from me; all thing decays,
Yet can I not remove.
Alas the while!"
She wept and wrung her hands withal,
The tears fell in my neck;
She turned her face and let it fall;
Scarcely therewith could speak.
Alas the while!
Her pains tormented me so sore
That comfort had I none,
But cursed my fortune more and more
To see her sob and groan:
Alas the while!
Forget Not Yet
Forget not yet the tried intent
Of such a truth as I have meant,
My great travail so gladly spent
Forget not yet.

Sir Thomas Wyatt
The poem is by Sir Thomas Wyatt (?1503-42), who was a courtier in the reign of Henry VIII. Wyatt was for a large part of his career an embassador for the king. He participated actively in several of the sumptuous 'disguisings' put on at the court of Henry VIII, in which the King and courtiers dressed themselves in fine clothes and rich masks to perform impromptu plays or dances. The phrase 'after a pleasant guise' might take on a firmer association with performances in the light of this information. Wyatt was imprisoned when Henry VIII accused Anne Boleyn of adultery in 1536, and was suspected of being one of Anne's lovers. This has led to some enthusiastically 'historical' readings of the poem in which the unnamed woman in the central stanza is taken to be Anne Boleyn. What might be wrong with reading the poem in this way? Wyatt's own biographical circumstances are only one form of historical information which we could bring to bear on the poem. How does the poem stand in relation to wider currents in literary history? The poem exists in Wyatt's own manuscript of his verse, and it is worth considering the ways in which you respond to it differently if you read an

Sir Thomas Wyatt was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge and served in the court of Henry VIII, holding several senior overseas positions including that of ambassador to Charles V (1537-1539), following his knighthood in 1535. He was not always in favour at court, however, and was twice imprisoned in the Tower of London. Together with Henry Howard , Earl of Surrey, he introduced the sonnet into English literature from Italy, providing it with its final rhyming couplet. Thomas Wyatt was educated at St John's college, Cambridge, and became an important and popular member of the court of King Henry VIII. In c.1520 he married Elizabeth Brooke, from whom he separated c.1525, charging her with adultery. He served Henry VIII on a number of missions, including to the Papal court and Venice in 1527, and in various offices and was knighted in 1535.
When Anne Boleyn lost the King's favour and was accused of adultery in 1536, Wyatt was arrested and imprisoned in the tower, possibly on suspicion of being one of her lovers. He was released the same year and in favour of the King again was made ambassador to Charles V in 1537.
