Sir Thomas Wyatt
Born at Allington Castle in Kent and educated at Cambridge, Wyatt spent most of his life in the service of Henry Eighth although he fell out of favour from time to time. Most notably, perhaps, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London under suspicion of being one of Anne's lovers. He was soon released and, back in favor, was appointed as ambassador to the court of Charles V in 1537. In 1541 he was back in the Tower following accusations of misconduct as ambassador, he was pardoned, possibly at the request of Catherine Howard and died in Sherborne, Dorset in 1542. He was not published until after his death. The first poem here has often been seen as containing covert hints of involvement with Anne Boleyn with the reference to Noli me tangere (Do not touch), for Caesar's I am. Whoso list to hunt, I know where is an hind

His parents were already estranged, his father rarely at home, being either abroad on the King ’s business or at Court. In boyhood he is said to have accompanied his father on an embassy to Spain, where the elder Sir Thomas Wyatt was threatened by the Inquisition. To this episode has been traced an irremovable detestation of the Spanish government, but the anecdote is probably apocryphal. All that is positively known of his relations with his father while the latter was in Spain is found in two letters which the elder Wyatt addressed from Spain to the younger, then fifteen years old. The letters give much sound moral advice.

    Notes on Life and Works
Sir Thomas Wyatt was born at Allington Castle, Kent, in 1503, the son of Henry Wyatt and Anne Skinner. He was educated at St. John's College Cambridge, become a diplomat in the service of Henry VIII about 1526 and travelled to Italy first in 1527. After a brief imprisonment for his affair with Anne Boleyn in 1536, the king's second wife who was executed for treason, Wyatt went to Spain as English ambassador to Charles V from 1537 to 1539. In 1541, after the fall of Thomas Cromwell, Wyatt was arrested again and charged with treason but his release followed shortly. He died October 11, 1542, and was buried at Sherborne. Having separated from his wife Elizabeth Brooke, daughter of Lord Cobham, Wyatt was survived by his mistress Elizabeth Darrell and their son Francis.

    Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503-1542)
Whoso List to Hunt, I Know where is an Hind
Whoso list to hunt, I know where is an hind, But as for me, , I may no more. The vain travail hath wearied me so sore, I am of them that farthest cometh behind. Yet may I by no means my wearied mind Draw from the deer, but as she fleeth afore Fainting I follow. I leave off therefore, Sithens in a net I seek to hold the wind. Who list her hunt, I put him out of doubt, As well as I may spend his time in vain. And graven with diamonds in letters plain There is written, her fair neck round about: Noli me tangere , for Caesar's I am, And wild for to hold, though I seem tame. Notes ] The source of the poem is perhaps Petrarch's 190th (157th) sonnet (Mestica, 270), but referring to Anne Boleyn, thought to have been Wyatt's mistress before Henry VIII wed her. Greetings Cyber traveller,
Having been offered this forum to share facts about my case and opinions, in general, of the death penalty as applied in the United States of America, I hope to provide relevant information that may stimulate intelligent debate.
My name, Thomas Anthony Wyatt, age 34, married once, divorced August 1984, one child, Christina "Renee", born November 4, 1984.
Renee just recently started visiting, our first visit since November 1985 occured April 12, 1997.... a very emotional and wonderful contact visit ! My story begins in North Carolina, raised in a disfunctional family, started using drugs and alcohol at age 13, criminal activity soon followed.
Received my first active prison sentence ( 2 years ) at age 17 for various petty crimes and driving violations.
My first serious conviction occured in 1984, I severely beat a 40 year old gay man, he persistantly accosted me and unfortunally, I blew my cool and received a 15 year sentence for my stupidity.
After serving nearly 2 years I had been promoted and transfered to a minimum custedy prison in North Carolina, assigned to work detail with the Department of Transportation, on May 13th, 1988 after consuming several cans of beer, me along with another inmate walked away from the work detail, stole a car and drove to Florida.

    57. Thomas Wyatt And Henry Howard
Sir thomas wyatt and Henry Howard, the earl of Surrey. Genre All of these are technically lyric verse, except wyatt s verse satire
    http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/thomas_wyatt_and_henry_howard.htm
Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard, the earl of Surrey Genre: All of these are technically "lyric verse," except Wyatt's verse satire ("Mine Own John Poins") and Surrey's translation from Virgil's Aeneid II. The term comes from Greek poetry where it defined poems made to be sung to the strumming of a lyre or small harp. The English favored the lute, a cousin of the guitar, so many of these poems might better be called "lute songs." If they actually had music, it has been lost, however, so they exist only as shadows of their original composition. The lute song, Wyatt's most common genre, may be in varying rhyme schemes and meters but generally tends toward short, trimeter or tetrameter lines with refrains. The sonnet (from French, "little song"), which both Wyatt and Surrey adapted from Petrarch, is a lyric probably not meant for instrumental accompaniment and reliably composed of fourteen lines of iambic pentameter. For a guide to the growth of the sonnet, including comparisons between Petrarch's sonnets in Italian, a Modern English translation, and Wyatt's and Surrey's adaptation in Early Modern English, click here Characters: The "character" of the lyric's speaker is a curious thing. T.S. Eliot, in "The Three Voices of Poetry," argued that the first or lyric voice was like that of the poet, him or herself, but overheard in the act of speaking to some other hearer, to an allegorized idea, or to some inanimate part of the world. Wyatt, for instance, appears to talk to his lute ("My Lute, Awake") and Surrey utters a strikingly familiar warrior's "boast" of loyalty in the presence of "Love," whom he calls "my lord." Sometimes the lyric's speaker declares madness, rejection, hatred, as well as passionate love, but in all instances the author's position must be treated as something necessarily separate from the speaker's. The division may be tissue thin (see "Who list his ease and wealth maintain" p. 534) but these are not testimonies under oath.

    Sir Thomas Wyatt
Sir Thomas Wyatt Sir Thomas Wyatt* was a pioneer in bringing to English poetry the new forms of the Italian Renaissance, especially the Petrarchan* sonnet. My galley charged with forgetfulness
Thorough sharp seas in winter nights doth pass
'Tween rock and rock; and eke mine enemy, alas
    That is my lord, steereth with cruelness;
And every oar a thought in readiness
As though that death were light in such a case.
An endless wind doth tear the sail apace
Of forced sighs and trusty fearfulness.
A rain of tears, a cloud of dark disdain
Hath done the wearied cords great hindrance,
Wreathed with error and eke with ignorance. The stars be hid that led me to this pain Drowned is reason that should me comfort And I remain despairing of the port. A translation of Petrarch's original* Shakespeare's sonnets are discussed in the section on his life Or listen to one of Wyatt's poems set to music.*
