"What would ye that I did?" said Sir Lancelot.
"I would have you to my husband," said Elaine.
"Fair damosel, I thank you," said Sir Lancelot,
"but truly," said he, "I cast me never to be wedded man."
"Then, fair knight," said she, "will ye be my paramour?"
"Jesu defend me," said Sir Lancelot, "for then I

"Alas," said she, "then must I die for your love."

SHE came when evening came, - her feet The cool grass comforted, - Where love through morn and noon-day heat Her seeking steps had led To him who had no love for her, And nigh whose life was dead. Lone through the lengthened days he lay Within that hermit's cave, Since, on the fatal tourney day, So deep the lancehead drave It seemed nor any skill could heal, Nor any love could save. Was closed that riven hurt where-through The restless life had drained.

READERS LIBRARY EDITOR'S NOTE THE HANDPRINT MYSTERY is an excellent murder-mystery novel, No thrill-writer knows better than Mr. Sydney Fowler (who is of course in reality Mr. Sydney Fowler Wright) how to arrest the attention of the reader at the very outset of his stories, And when once he has riveted his attention never releases his grip. In the opening paragraphs of the book Major Cattell-Pratt calls at Bodmin House - a block of offices overlooking Fenchurch Street. He is seeking for office accommodation and becomes very interested in a suite that has just been let with the name "The Bulfwin Syndicate" painted on the door. He asks to view the rooms with the idea of seeing their size, etc. The caretaker opens the door, goes in, and instantly shrinks back uttering a cry of horror, "Oh, sir, there's a man - it's all blood!" For two years one of the "big noises" at Scotland Yard has been investigating a mysterious murder case without success. It is he who is called to the Bulfwin office. He comes to the conclusion that the crime has only just been committed and that it is closely connected with the case upon which he has been at work. From this dramatic moment the story moves swiftly on, and the tension never slackens till the last page

    CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
THE cave-mouth was at some height from the land over which it looked. It must have been a hard way to climb at the first, but now steps had been built in a bow's shape, curving outward from side to side, shallow and broad, and being three tens and four to the count. Stele did not count these steps, as he would have been likely to do, for he could not come so forward as that. In fact, he could not come forward enough to see very much, for the cave's roof ended, and the darkness therefore, at a place where the rock slit upward in a fissure very narrow and high, so that those who went forth must walk by not more than two, with the walls pressing on either hand. There was one that had gone ahead at a quick pace to make it known that the King came. Now he walked forward alone. The cave had narrowed as it rose, becoming an upward slit in the rock, very lofty, before it split to the sky. Standing back in the dark mouth, there was not space for a level front. Some must keep to a dark rear. Elsya walked three paces behind the King. Thelmo and Tekla followed, being side by side.

    CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
THELMO drew Stele to talk of himself for a time, for he would know more of this man whom his, sister sought. Stele told of how he should have fought Borl, and of the mischance by which that was stayed. "So I have killed none," he said, in a modest way, "that is, of our own kind, though I must be near to my full strength, and may be chief of my tribe even as I sit here." (For they sat round the spread food on the hut floor, as they talked.) "I should say that you have done more, having had, it may be, better chances than mine." Thelmo, who was little older than he, allowed that might be no more than truth. "At least, if you call them equal to men, which we scarcely do. I have killed many of those who come through the great swamp, but there was little merit in that, for the battle lasted three days, giving time for much." "That was far from this vale?" Elsya was glad at that. Her eyes shone, and she looked at Thelmo in a way that he would learn to love, as she meant that he should. "My heart knew well that you were a greater prince than of this vale." "The way out of this valley is through the hills on the eastern side. It is not over the hills, which will never be climbed by man on that side, as you can see for yourselves, but by caverns that none may trace (except that the way be shown), so that they die in the dark; for there is no light by that way."
