The Look

Played By James Remar From the moment Samantha met hotel magnate Richard Wright (played by James Remar), the sexual chemistry was palpable. Powerful, wealthy and unabashedly confident, alpha male Richard seemed the perfect prey for Samantha - professionally and personally.
Samantha didn't have an easy time landing Richard as her mega-client. To get through Richard's chauvinist standards, Samantha ultimately had to prove to Richard that she had "balls." "I love that you're not scared of me," said Richard at their first meeting of the minds.
Like Samantha, Richard isn't one to mince words. "I like to sleep around." Also like Samantha, Richard knows what he wants and usually gets it. After bonding over the joys of being single, Richard whisked Samantha off on his private jet and seduced her on take-off. For a man of Richard's means, not even the sky is the limit.
Providing phenomenal sex with no strings, Richard Wright became Samantha's "Mr. Right." That is, until Richard added some romantic gestures to the mix. After a skinny-dipping sex session, he persuaded Samantha to join him in a slow dance and we watched as Samantha struggled to keep her emotional distance. After taking Ecstasy one night, Samantha was overcome by her emotions and declared her love to Richard mid-orgasm. The next day, the smooth, monogamy-fearing Richard just chalked it up to the X. A relationship was as foreign a concept to Richard as it was to Samantha. But even game-master Richard couldn't control the forces at play and soon said the words, "I love you Samantha."

Native Son was an instant success and sold a quarter of a million copies in its first month of publication, and, together with Black Boy , established Wright as a writer of power and intensity. An online FACILITATOR GUIDE is available for this title. ABOUT THE FILM Richard Wright - Black Boy is the first film on the life, work and legacy of Richard Wright. Born outside Natchez, Mississippi in 1908, Wright overcame a childhood of poverty and oppression to become one of America's most influential writers. His first major works, Native Son and Black Boy , were runaway best sellers which are still mainstays of high school and college literature and composition classes. According to critic Irving Howe, "The day Native Son appeared American culture was changed forever."

    FIRST FLYER
Richard Pearse: "Mad Pearse", "Bamboo Dick", self-taught inventor, prophetic designer, trail blazing aviator and eccentric visionary. On or about 31st March 1903 a reclusive New Zealand farmer Richard Pearse climbed into a self-built monoplane and flew for about 140 metres before crashing into a gorse hedge on his Waitohi property . Even at half the distance Pearse must have felt the liberating but anxious exhilaration of flying. There is uncertainty about whether it met the definitions of sustained flight, but it came eight months before the Wright Brothers entered the record books at Kitty Hawk North Carolina on 17th December 1903. Childhood Dreaming
Richard William Pearse was born on 3 December 1877 at Waitohi Flat, Temuka, South Island, New Zealand, the fourth of nine children to Digory Pearse and Sarah Brown, Digory an immigrant from Cornwall, England and Sarah from Ireland, who was working in a shop in Timaru when Digory met her. They farmed a property, Trewarlet, five miles inland from Temuka, where the Pearses, known locally as the "gentleman farmers", maintained an active social and cultural life. They fielded a strong tennis team, building their own courts on the estate, and even in an age where self rather than mass amusement was the norm, they were uncommonly musical, forming their own family orchestra in which Richard played the cello.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
Among sympathetic readers, there is an assumption that Wright is documentary, that his works can be read as elementary sociology. If these readers are familiar with literary movements, they also assume he can be classed as a naturalistic author displaying the experience of victims. Readers of a negative disposition are inclined to class Wright as an exponent of hate, an unreasonable writer who is not sensitive to the complexities of moral experience. For all of these readers, a useful approach is to focus on the narrative point of view, the third-person narration (or what is technically labeled free, indirect discourse or narrated monologue) that places us within the consciousness of the protagonist. This introduces a complexity of mind, an experience of identification (but not identity) that can illustrate how we and the protagonist are "inside" of statistics or documentary, how we experience life as though we had choice and cannot be victims. I would recommend for study of "The Man Who Was Almost a Man" some consideration of how Wright revised his work to make it less and less "realistic," more and more symbolic. This approach allows for treatment of the issue of universality. Student discussion often centers around guilt and freedom. The most commonly asked questions have to do with a tendency to allegorize the underground journey. While exploring what Wright might intend by some of his choices of settings that the character enters, it is possible to suggest that they are categorical and take him into dominant institutions while exposing the workings of the social values.
