Wright, Richard Black Boy
Genre Memoir (303 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Acculturation African-American Experience Child Abuse ... Survival Summary This is American writer Richard Wright's story of his life as a black child in the American South (Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas) in the early decades of the 20th century. Black Boy opens with the disaster in which Richard at the age of four accidentally burns down his grandparents' house and is beaten nearly to death by his mother as punishment. The book ends with Richard's hopeful escape north to Chicago at the age of eighteen. In between are years of heart-stopping survival stories, as Richard, an intelligent and willful child who tries to resist many of the demands of his strongly segregated environment, runs head-on into the hatred of racists and the deep poverty, hunger, and oppression that so often were the lot of the system's victims. (On the subject of hunger, one of the book's working titles was American Hunger, and Wright was chronically hungry all these years. He gets so used to extreme hunger that at one point late in the book after a short interlude with regular meals he is surprised to discover that he can suddenly read faster!)

His (1938), a collection of four stories, was highly acclaimed. In 1937 he moved to New York, New York, where he was an editor on the communist newspaper, Daily Worker , but the publication of Native Son (1940) brought him overnight fame. Born near Natchez, Mississippi, the grandson of slaves and son of a sharecropper, he went to school in Jackson, Mississippi, though only up to the ninth grade, but got a story published at age 16 while working at various jobs in the South. In 1927 he went to Chicago, Illinois, and worked briefly in the post office but, forced on relief by the Depression, he joined the Communist Party in 1932. With two more minor works published, he found employment with the Federal Writers Project. Wright was one of the first to depict the condition of black people in 20th-century US society with his powerful tragic novel Native Son and the autobiography Black Boy in 1945. A stage version of

TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2:
The Implementation
Gary R. Wright + W. Richard Stevens
Addison-Wesley 1995 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee As presentations of the TCP/IP protocols, the first volumes of Stevens' TCP/IP Illustrated and Comer's Internetworking with TCP/IP are evenly matched. When it comes to TCP/IP implementations, however, the second volume of TCP/IP Illustrated has a definite edge on the second volume of Internetworking with TCP/IP . For one thing, it describes a real implementation the 4.4BSD-Lite (Net 3) code rather than a "toy" one, and it covers it in far greater detail. While Comer and Stevens included chapters on SNMP clients and servers, and on implementation of the RIP and OSPF routing algorithms, Wright and Stevens restrict themselves to TCP/IP "proper", providing separate chapters on topics such as SLIP and ethernet drivers, IGMP, and packet filtering. With almost twice as many pages, the extra depth is hardly surprising, but since most people will use it as a reference rather than reading it cover to cover (I have read only four of the thirty two chapters in full), I don't think the length has any disadvantages. The promise of the "illustrated" in the title is fulfilled with diagrams showing the relationships between different functions, lists of global variables, diagrams of the data structures used, and a complete code listing. It's still not easy reading, but it's a darn sight more fun than looking at the raw code. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter, with some solutions in an appendix.

While at Trent, Mr. Wright published his first novel, The Weekend Man , which received high acclaim. He was the recipient of a scholarship from Quaker Oats. He was a student of Catharine Parr Traill College, and lived with his wife and young child in a small cottage on Chemong Lake. Richard B.
