BIOGRAPHY back to the main Wright page references Richard Nathan Wright was born September 4, 1908 in Roxie, Mississippi (not far from Nachez), the son of Nathan Wright, an illiterate sharecropper, and Ella Wilson Wright, a schoolteacher, and the grandson of slaves. In 1911 Ella takes Wright and barely one year old brother Leon Alan to Natchez to live with her family and the father later joins them and finds work in a sawmill. In 1913, the four Wrights moved to Memphis, Tennessee. But within a year, Nathan deserts them for another woman and Ella works as a cook to support the family. In September 1915, Richard entered school at Howe Institute. However, Ella fell ill early in 1916 and Richard's father Nathan's mother came for a while to care for the family. When she left, Richard and Alan had to live for a brief time in an orphange until Ella could have them live with her parents in Jackson, Mississippi. But again, Richard, Alan, and Ella were moved, this time with Ella's sister Maggieand her husband Silas Hoskins in Elaine, Arkansas. But whites murdered Hoskins, and the family ran to West Helena, Arkansas, and then to Jackson, Mississippi. After a few months, they return to West Helena, where mother and aunt cook and clean for whites. Soon, Aunt Maggie goes north to Detroit with her new lover. Wright entered school in the fall of 1918, but was forced to leave afer a few months because his mother's poor health forces him to earn money to support the family. Unable to pay their rent, the family moved and Wright gathers excess coal next to the railroad tracks in order to heat the home. When his mother suffers a paralyzing stroke, they return with Ella's Mother to Jackson, and Aunt Maggie takes Leon Alan to Detroit with her.

WRIGHT, RICHARD
, African-American novelist and social critic. His father's desertion of the family, coupled with his mother's crippling illness, which left her and her two sons in poverty, made Wright's early years unhappy ones. Growing up in Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas, Wright felt isolated and rebellious against authority. Self-taught following his graduation from junior high school, and embittered by segregation and racism, he was drawn to the acerbic social criticism of H. L. Mencken and the naturalistic novels of Theodore Dreiser and Sinclair Lewis. In 1927, he left the South for Chicago, where he entered the postal service. Attracted by communist organizers, he became executive secretary of the John Reed Club of Chicago and joined the party around 1933. He published radical poetry, essays, and short fiction in such leftist magazines as Anvil and New Masses. He also had other, often conflicting literary interests. Influenced by James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, and James T. Farrell, he completed in 1934 his first novel, "Cesspool" (published posthumously as Lawd Today ), which offered a bleak and pessimistic view of humanity.

Richard Wright
Novelist and short-story writer, who was among the first black American writers to protest white treatment of blacks, notably in his novel Native Son (1940) and his autobiography, Black Boy (1945). He inaugurated the tradition of protest explored by other black writers after World War II.
Wright's grandparents had been slaves. His father left home when he was five, and the boy, who grew up in poverty, was often shifted from one relative to another. He worked at a number of jobs before joining the northward migration, first to Memphis, Tenn., and then to Chicago. There, after working in unskilled jobs, he got an opportunity to write through the Federal Writers' Project. In 1932 he became a member of the Communist Party, and in 1937 he went to New York City, where he became Harlem editor of the Communist Daily Worker

On richard wright s Poetry. richard wright s poetry has ironically or white, of his time. By Bill Mullen. Return to richard wright.
http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/s_z/r_wright/about.htm
On Richard Wright's Poetry Richard Wright's poetry has ironically suffered a dearth of critical attention given its significance as a record of his entrée to both American Communism and a literary career. Wright joined the American Communist Party in 1934, the same year he published two poems in the CP's John Reed Club journal Left Front. "A Red Love Note" and "Rest for the Weary" appeared in the January-February 1934 issue. Between 1934 and 1941, Wright published more than a dozen poems in the Left press, including the famous "Between the World and Me" in Partisan Review (July/August 1935) and the poem included here, "We of the Streets," in the April 13, 1937 New Masses. Keneth Kinnamon, in a 1969 essay, has rightly contended that "the ideology of his (Wright's) proletarian poems was a basic, even essential, motive force of the firstand major phase of his literary career" ("Proletarian," 250). Poems like "I Have Seen Black Hands" welded Wright's power as imagist to an explicitly revolutionary radicalism: I am black and I have seen black hands
Raised in fists of revolt, side by side with the white fists

Excerpt Ordering Return to Inner Traditions' homepage About the Book The art of divining, or dowsing, has for years been cloaked in mystery and superstition. Recognized by some as a means of finding water and minerals, it is actually a method for anyone to develop intuitive skills. This thought-provoking book demystifies dowsing and presents this ancient science as a powerful tool for self-knowledge. Includes a brief history of dowsing, and step-by-step instructions for learning to use L-rods, Y-rods, and pendulums, as well as non-device dowsing. Shows how dowsing is used for locating water, gold and other minerals, buried artifacts, ancient ritual sites, and in police work to help find missing persons. About the Author Terry Ross was a dowser from 1927 until his recent death in July 2000. Founder and President of the American Society of Dowsers, he was one of only six people in the world to receive the Col. Bell Award from the British Society of Dowsers. Richard Wright was co-director with Terry Ross of the American School of Dowsing from 1984 to 1987. He is currently a trustee of the American Society of Dowsers and one of the four editors of the American Dowser Quarterly Reviews "For a complete stranger to dowsing you would be hard put to find a better introduction; for those who think they already know something, it might be a surprising revelation."
