Add to a Notebook In 1913 Vallejo enrolled again at Trujillo University and studied literature and law, and read voraciously about determinism, mythology, and evolution. After receiving a Master's Degree in Spanish literature in 1915, Vallejo continued to study law until 1917. However, his life in Trujillo had become complicated by a tortured love affair and he moved to Lima. Vallejo found work as the principal of a prestigious school. At night he visited opium dens in Chinatown and hung out in the Bohemian cafe where he met the important literary figures of the time, including Manual Gonzalez Prada, one of Peru's leading leftists. When Vallejo's Los heraldos negros was published, in 1919, it was received enthusiastically. Vallejo then began to push his talent in a new direction. Vallejo lost his teaching post for refusing to marry a woman with whom he was having an affair. In 1920, after his mother's death and the loss of a second teaching job, Vallejo visited his home. During a feud that broke out before his arrival in Santiago de Chuco, an aide to the subprefect was shot and the general store burned to the ground. Vallejo, who was actually writing up the legal information about the shooting for the subprefect, was blamed as an "intellectual instigator." In spite of protest telegrams from intellectuals and newspaper editors, he was imprisoned for 105 days. When released on parole, he left for Lima, embittered by the affair.

Student Life Initiative
President and Mrs. Wright greet incoming students at the President's House during orientation week.
Dartmouth provides an education of the highest quality to its undergraduate, graduate and professional students and seeks to foster a love of learning in every member of its community. A Dartmouth education is much more than a collection of courses taken; it is an experience built on enduring values and traditions that have marked the College since its very beginnings: initiative, personal responsibility, strong interactions between faculty and students, and a sense of freedom that allows our students to challenge each other, the faculty and the institution itself. These attributes support an inclusive sense of community that is a distinguishing characteristic of Dartmouth. The quality of the out-of-classroom experience is an essential measure of our success in educating all of our students in the broadest manner possible. To that end, in 1999, Dartmouth's Trustees and President James Wright announced an initiative aimed at enhancing the out-of-classroom experience at the College. In the five years since the Student Life Initiative was announced, we have made progress toward improving residential life, adding new programs and social options, strengthening the Coed, Fraternity and Sorority system, and upgrading facilities and infrastructure.

Poems by James Wright
By Robert Hass

September 27, 1998
I have been reading the poetry of James Wright this week. Partly to deflect my attention from the public spectacle we've all been dragged through, partly because Wright despised the self-righteousness and prurience in American public life. He wrote of Eisenhower's visit to Franco in 1959: The American hero must triumph over
The forces of darkness. He wrote of his countryman Warren Harding:
He died in public. He claimed the secret right
To be ashamed. Wright, who died in 1980, grew up in Martin's Ferry, Ohio, in the middle of the Depression. He knew what hard times were in a factory town in
America in those years when his father worked for Hazel-Atlas Glass and
his friends' fathers worked for Wheeling Steel and their sons lurked
aimlessly on Saturday nights along the banks and among the sinkholes of
language of the place.

James Wright Scholarship
Background: The pages accessible here contain information culled from a bibliography of primary and secondary James Wright material on which I am working as part of my doctoral dissertation.
Intention: I've selected parts of this bibliography which might further Wright research in the scholarly community, particularly in the context of online research (There are a variety of WWW links in these pages, esp. in section 3.)
Scope: The majority of my bibliography (i.e. listings of Wright's books and individual poems/prose pieces, as well as reviews of Wright's books and other secondary items) is not shown here, and what is shown should not be used for any purpose other than assisting personal research.
A few notes on formatting: The titles of books and journals found on these pages are neither underlined nor italicized, and bibliographical entries are not indented. Sorry I'm at the mercy of my page-designing software! In addition, any entries that I haven't been able to verify are preceded by an asterisk.
Contact: If you find any errors, or if you have any questions, please e-mail me at Todd_Copeland@baylor.edu.

From the Seattle Times , May 25, 1972: Pulitzer Prize poet in Seattle
by Julie Emery Dr. James Wright, America's newest Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry, is in Seattle with kind words for the nation's young people. Wright said the young are writing "a great deal of poetry and have a special gift." "This doesn't happen in every generation," said the University of Washington alumnus. "They're creating their own music." The formal British influence in poetry is being shaken off, Wright said a movement that began with him and a group of his friends in about 1960. This has been interpreted by some as a more relaxed tone in verse. Wright said this generation of youth has "something to deal with" (social problems) that is much more difficult to cope with than that which he faced in early years. The result is some "extraordinarily beautiful" poetry, he said. "Young people are charting their own course, and they deserve it," he remarked. "We've laid too much on them."
