This file contains portions of the pension file. State of Ohio Ashtabula County Harpersfield, August 14, 1838 On this 14th day of August, AD 1838, personally appeared before the subscriber a justice of the peace for Harpersfield Town this county and state aforesaid, Elizabeth Wright, a resident of said Harpersfield in the County and State aforesaid aged eighty nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of Congress passed July 4, 1836. That she is the widow of James Wright who was a private soldier in the army of the United States, that the said James Wright enlisted in the year 1775 in Captain John W - Company and was commanded by Col. John Patterson and was attached to his regiment. That said James Wright continued in the service until the close of the war. She further declares that she was married to the said James Wright on the 13th day of December, 1768, that her husband, the aforesaid James Wright died ont he 10 day of October 1813 and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will now fully - by reference to the proof . Signed Elizabeth Wright, her mark I John Lamont, being eighty years of age the 18th day of September 1878, being duly sworn on my said oath depose and say that in the 1775 James Wright enlisted in Capt. John W - company and was attached to John Patterson's Regiment, went to Boston Massachusetts then to New York, thence to Canada and continued in the army till the close of the war. I have been acquainted with James Wright from the time of his enlistment in the army until he died. That James Wright has lived with the above named Elizabeth Wright since before the commencement of the Revolutionary War till he died, that I have known James Wright, Elizabeth Wright, John Wright, Martha Wright, Mary Wright, Thomas Wright, Hulda Wright, Samuel Wright, Solomon Wright, all children of James and Elizabeth. That Solomon Wright above named is the youngest child of said James and Elizabeth, that he is forty four years of age, the 20th of August 1878. That the aforesaid Elizabeth Wright has never been married since the death of said James, that said Elizabeth has been confined to her bed for several years. That she is in destitute circumstances. Sworn to subscribers before me on this 14th day of August 1838 Signed John Lamont Know all men by there presents that I Elizabeth Wright of Harpersfield in the County of Ashtabula and State of Ohio appoint James Woodworth of Harpersfield aforesaid my true and lawful attorney for and in my name to receive from the United States any and all money I may receive or am entitled to receive in conveyance of services rendered the United States by James Wright and to take all such measures as may be necessary to procure the pension and in all things pertaining to the procurement of the same to act and do with as full power as I myself might -. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 14th day of August AD 1838 Signed Elizabeth Wright The State of Ohio Ashtabula County Be it known that on the 14th day of August 1838 before the subscriber a Justice of the peace in aforesaid County, personally appeared the above named Elizabeth Wright and acknowledged this same to be her mark and seal. I Elizabeth Wright, the widow of James Wright, deceased, testify and say that my deceased husband, James Wright, in the year 1775, first enlisted under Captain Eli - - the State of Connecticut. That in 1776 or 1777 he was in Captain - - company. That the following is a true copy of the family record, now in my possession. James Wright, born August 16th 1747, that I was born Dec 19, 1747. That we were married Dec 13, 1768. Our first child, James Junr. born Oct 6, 1769. Elizabeth born May 28th 1771. John born Feby 17, 1773. Martha born 1775 Feb 24th. Mary born March 18, 1779. Thomas born Sept 24, 1783. Huldah born June 18, 1786. Samuel born Nov. 29, 1787. Solomon born August 20, 1794. James my husband died October 20th 1783. Elizabeth my daughter died Nov 4, 1793. Samuel died Oct 7, 1828. Martha died August 19, 1834. That I was married by the Rev. W. Champion, Litchfield, Connecticut. The above is hereby copied from the original record. That my husband enlisted and served during the war. Signed Elizabeth Wright, her mark December 29, 1838, Harpersfield The above affidavit subscribed by Elizabeth Wright was sworn to before me. J P Coller, Justice of the Peace I Solomon Wright being forty four years do testify and say that the statement made by Elizabeth Wright aforesaid is true. That the same was taken from the family record of said family kept in the bible. Inscribed on the Roll of Pittsburgh at the rate of 80 dollars to commence on the 4th day of March, 1834. - 20th January 1841, the time of her death. Certificate of pension issued the 23 day of September 1841 and sent to James' Widow at Painesville, Ohio. Arrears to the 20 of Janaury 1841 - $740.67 State of Ohio Lake County On this fourteenth day of May, 1841, personally appeared before the Court of Common Pleas of said County and State in open session, James Wright of Harpersfield Ashtabula County, Ohio, Thomas Wright of Perry in said County of Lake, Huldah Andrews, wife of Elisha Andrews of said Harpersfield and Solomon Wright of said Harpersfield, children of James Wright and Elizabeth Wright deceased who being duly sworn according to law do oaths, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July 4, 1836. That they are the children of James Wright and Elizabeth Wright his wife. That said James Wright was a soldier of the Revolution and served five months nine days in the 5th company of the 7th Regt. raised by order of the General Assembly of Conn. as a private. He entered the company July 10th and was discharged Dec 19, 1775. His officers was Nathan Tuttle, Capt and Eli Caltin, Lieutenant. That said James Wright during said service and during the whole of the War was a resident of Litchfield, Con. at which place he resided when he entered the service, and where his family resided until after the - of the war. Also that the said James Wright enlisted into the Connecticut line of the Continental Army and served in the fifth Continental Regt., from the 5th of January 1777 to the first of January 1780 a term of two years eleven months and twenty days. These declarants always that said Wright enlisted and served during the war, but they can not set forth definitely on amount of the early age of the oldest of the declarents when the serving was performed and they are also unable to specify the particular nature of his service any further than that their father, the said James Wright, was by birth an Englishman and active as - in life in the service. They further declare that their father, said James Wright, was married to their mother Elizabeth Wright, whose maiden name was Lee, in Litchfield Connecticut, December 13, 1768. That said James and Elizabeth have the following children: James, born October 6, 1769, now residing in Harpersfield, Ashtabula Co., Ohio Elizabeth, born May 28, 1771 and died Nov 4, 1793 John Wright, born February 17, 1773, who now resides in the County of Coshocton in the State of Ohio Martha, born February 24, 1775, died September 17, 1834 Mary, born March 18, 1777, who was afterward married to Matthew Smith and when last heard of was a widow living near the mouth of Grand River in Canada - nothing has been heard from her since two years ago last fall. Thomas Wright, born September 24, 1783, now residing in Perry Lake County Huldah, born June 18, 1786, afterwards married to Elisha Andrews and now residing in Harpersfield Ashtabula County, Ohio Samuel Wright, born November 29, 1787 and who died October 14, 1822, and Solomon Wright, born August 20, 1794 and now resides in Harpersfield Asht. County, Ohio. That the original family record of the children of said James and Elizabeth and also the certificate of the record at Litchfield showing the same is on file accompanying the application of said Elizabeth for a pension at the pension office. That the said James Wright dec'd, died in Harpersfield, Ash. County, Ohio, October 20, 1813 and the said Elizabeth his wife and widow dec'd, at said Harpersfield, January 20, 1841, and they would also refer to the evidence of this marriage also on file at the Pension office in the papers of said Elizabeth, this their mother. That it is very difficult on account of the residence of said James Wright and Mary Smith if not impracticable to get all the children together at one time. These declarants offer for proof of their relationship to the said father and mother to the proof hereto , and then on file in the application of their said mother in the Pension office and also infer to the certificate of the Comptroller of Con. on file in the Pension office, and the proof thereto to from the services of said James Wright their father, and to prove his identity. Signed, James Wright, his mark Signed Thomas Wright Signed Hulda Andrews, her mark Signed Solomon Wright State of Ohio Lake County I John W Cowden, Clerk of the County of Common Pleas within and for said County of Lake do hereby certify that at the May Term of this Court AD 1841 the following order was entered upon the Journals of this Court to wit; This day came James Wright, Thomas Wright, Solomon Wright and Huldah Andrews and in open court make their declaration in order to obtain a pension on account of the services of their Father James Wright Deceased and proved to the satisfaction of the Court that they the said James, Thomas, Solomon, and Hulda, are the identical children of James Wright the elder and of Elizabeth, deceased at Harpersfield in the County of Ashtabula on the twentieth day of January 1841. Whereupon it was ordered by the Court that these proceedings be certified to the War Department In testimony whereof I have thereunto subscribed my name and affixed the Seal of the said Court at Painesville this 31st day of May AD 1841 Signed John W Cowden, Clerk I John A Harper of Perry in the County of Lake and State of Ohio, aged sixty seven, now depose and say I formerly resided in Harpersfield in the State of New York and was well acquainted with Old Mr. James Wright and his wife Elizabeth of said Harpersfield, who afterwards removed to Harpersfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio, where they both dec'd. That said James Wright was apparently an old countryman, and himself as well as - said was in the Revolutionary War. That said James and Elizabeth had nine children to wit: James, Elizabeth, John, Martha, Mary, Thomas, Huldah, Saml. and Solomon, and that James, Thomas, And Solomon who subscribed the foregoing declaration to obtain a pension, are the identical children of said James Wright, dec'd and his said wife Elizabeth Signed John A Harper Sworn and subscribed this 14 May 18141 I Harry Brakeman of LeRoy in the County of Lake depose and say that I am fifty five years of age. That I formerly resided in Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York and was acquainted with James Wright of Harpersfield, Delaware County, and his wife Elizabeth, who afterwards moved to Harpersfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio, where they both died. That said James Wright was reported to be an Englishman by birth and removed to said Harperfield N.Y. from the State of Connecticut. I was well acquainted with the children of said James and Elizabeth and they are as follows to wit: James Wright, Elizabeth Wright, John Wright, Martha Wright, Mary Wright, Thomas Wright, Huldah Wright, Samuel Wright and Solomon Wright. That said Elizabeth, Martha and Saml. are reported to be dead and that James Wright, Solomon Wright and Huldah Andrews of said Harpersfield in the County of Ashtabula and Thomas Wright of Perry Lake County are the identical children of said James and Elizabeth Wright deceased. Signed Henry Brakeman Sworn and subscribed this 14 May 1841 I, J. B. Bartholomew of lawful age, fifty seven and duly sworn on my said oath depose and say that I have been personally acquainted with the family of James Wright and Elizabeth Wright wife of the said James Wright (now both deceased) for the term of forty five years, my first acquaintance with said family was in Schohary Co., Jefferson Township in the State of New York, from thence the said James Wright and his family and this despondent moved about thirty six or seven years ago to the State of Ohio, Ashtabula Co., Harpersfield Township, where this despondent and a part of the said James Wrights family has resided ever since. Elizabeth Wright, wife of the deceased James Wright died, if I mistake not in the month of January 1841. Said James Wright and Elizabeth his wife had nine children, give boys and four girls, the names of said boys are James, John, Samuel, Thomas and Solomon, the names of the said girls Elizabeth, Martha, Molly, and Huldah, of the number of said children, Elizabeth, Martha and Samuel died a number of years ago. This despondent in conversations with James Wright deceased, often heard him say he served in the army in the Revolutionary War. This deponent would be of the opinion about all of the time under Col Bradley. Signed J. B. Bartholomew War Department Revolutionary Claim I certify that, in conformity with the 3d sectio of the law of the United States, of the 4th July, 1836, Elizabeth Wright of Ohio, widow of James Wright, who was a private in the War of the Revolution was entitled to receive eighty dollars per annum commencing on the 4th of March, 1831, and that having died on the 20th day of January, 1841, the amount due up to the time of her death is payable to James Wright, Thomas Wright, Solomon Wright, and Huldah Andrews, children of said deceased.
