Anne McCaffrey, who has inspired a loyal following of readers to keep up with the tales of Pern and the dragons and riders who dwell there, honored OtherSpace with an interview. We encourage our readers to order the books featured here to see more of her work.
Mikhar asks: What have been your main influences in your writing? Have you found yourself inspired by any other authors?
Anne McCaffrey answers: I was very young when my parents read to me from Rudyard Kipling, but I grew up wanting to emulate his ability to tell a story that makes you read and reread it. In my preteens, I liked Edgar Rice Burroughs because his Tarzan and John Carter stories were so unusual. Rereading him now, his chauvinism and conservatism annoys me. But he was a man of his times as I am a woman of mine. However, when I was fourteen, I read Austin Tappan Wright's ISLANDIA and Wright's philosophy had an intense appeal for me at that impressionable age which I have never lost. Gildar asks: Have any events in your books been symbols for a real life happening? if so, what?

Richard Godfrey Gouda was the location for a Potter's festival in June 2000, and Richard was there. We liked his work so much we bought two pieces. Tate Modern . Just go! The huge painting by Stanley Spencer (The Resurrection: Port Glasgow) reduced me to tears. Jheronimus Bosch . The strange paintings of Bosch made an impression on me from a very young age. There was a major exhibition of his works at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam until 11th November 2001. Follow the link to go to the excellent web site devoted to Bosch's works and his life and times. Till Ansgar Baumhauer . I have to confess that I've never had the opportunity to actually visit an exhibition of Till's work. But as he's a friend of ours, I'm putting him in this list. One day I'll get to see his art "in the flesh", so to speak... The Codex Seraphinianus . Well, it's ostensibly a book, but it's really a work of art. It's apparently an encylopaedia, from a universe that is nearly parallel to our own. It's written in a strange language and profusely illustrated by hand (possibly!). Bound in black silk, and with handmade paper, it's the most expensive book I've ever purchased.

Fictional country
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Fictional countries are common in stories of early science fiction (or scientific romance ). These countries are supposedly part of the normal Earth landscape although they are not located in a normal atlas . Later similar tales often took place on fictional planets Jonathan Swift 's protagonist, Lemuel Gulliver , visited various strange places. Edgar Rice Burroughs placed adventures of Tarzan in areas in Africa that, at the time, were mostly unexplored. Isolated islands with strange creatures and/or customs were popular in these authors' times. When Western explorers had surveyed most of the Earth's surface, this option was lost. Thereafter utopian and dystopian societies have been usually placed on other planets , whether in human colonies in our Solar system or in societies on fictional planets orbiting other stars Superhero and agent comics and some thrillers also use fictional countries as backdrops. Most of these countries exist only for a single story, TV series episode or an issue of comic book.

  • Dr. Pascal Lee - Listen to this show
On Sunday - July 27 th - our guest on Hour 25 was scientist and Mars researcher Dr. Pascal Lee.
A few weeks ago Suzanne and I were at the International Space Development Conference that was held in San Jose. While there I gave a lecture on Reuseable Launch Vehicles and we had the opportunity to meet and interview a number of other persons who were attending the conference.
Dr. Pascal Lee from the Mars Institute was there giving a talk on the on-going work of the NASA Haughton Mars Project. This activity involves scientists and engineers who are doing real field geology on an impact crater in a cold desert found above the arctic circle. They are not just doing good science but they're also learning about the traps and pitfalls that scientists can expect to find someday when humans go to explore Mars in person.
So after he gave his talk I sat down with Pascal to chat with him about the exploration of Mars and the work of the NASA Haughton Mars Project. Devon Island might not be Mars, but the similarities are striking. After listening to Pascal talk about his experiences there I had a deeper appreciation for what life will be like for the first humans to set foot on Mars.

You asked for material for an `Yvonne Rousseau' web page. John says that any amount will do, so I'm handing him quite an electronic bundle to send to you. Please tell if you'd like something utterly different instead. Author biography printed in the first edition of The Murders At Hanging Rock in 1980: `Yvonne Rousseau was born at Benalla on 1 August 1945, but was moved six weeks later to a dairy-farm in South Gippsland. She attended Hallston State and Leongatha High schools, and graduated from Melbourne University in 1967, as a B.A. (Hons.) in English and Philosophy. She has since worked in a miscellany of jobs, ranging from pineapple-trimmer to book-editor. The lovers of tradition, for whose pleasure these facts are recorded, will also be relieved to learn that this, Ms Rousseau's first book, was written amid increasingly abject poverty (although not in a garret, and not with the assistance of absinthe). The author's next work is expected to be satirical= ...'

    4. AOTW: If you could be a character from a fantasy novel (your own included), movie or game, who would you be? Why? Juliet McKenna: In general, I'd prefer to be one of the nameless happy people in the background rather than risking life and limb to save the world. Put me on the spot and I think I'd opt for Nerilka, in Anne McCaffrey's Pern . There's an intelligent woman who works through her trials, finds a use for her skills and ends up with a respected, settled place in her world. Teresa Edgerton: I don't think I would want to be a character in a fantasy novel, movie, or game.  If I was a character, I would be stranded in one particular story, in one set of experiences. As the writer, I can go anywhere and see anything, and experience it all through the eyes of all the different characters. Not to mention, I have the advantage of being in charge.
But if I had to be a character, I suppose I would choose Teleri, in my "Green Lion" books, since I gave her everything I ever wanted when I was eighteen: a tower full of books, a magical garden, an amazing castle to explore - not to mention action, adventure, and a werewolf boyfriend. My inner-adolescent gets a little thrill just thinking about it. Margaret Weis: Lady Maigrey from the Star of the Guardians series. (Galactic fantasy.) She is who I would like to be, not who I am.

The great thing about working here is finding just the right book to put into your hands when you want something new. Now that I'm working 'behind the scenes' I don't get to answer this question much anymore. But if you hear someone asking "What are your favorite books? They don't have to be science fiction or fantasy, tell me about everything." or "What book would be the right book for your mood right now if you hadn't read it already?" or (to someone contemplating buying the posthumous writings of J. R. R. Tolkien) "If I gave you a magic window so you could look over Tolkien's shoulder as he wrote The Lord of the Rings, would you look through the window, or not?" then that's me. ;-) My own yardstick for what's good is that the book be good for what it is. I can read highfalutin' stuff like Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun or action-adventure-y stuff like the Indiana Jones novels, depending on what I want at the moment; but it has to be good highfalutin' stuff or good action-adventure. I like stories where the setting is so rich the place is like a character in the story: Austin Tappan Wright's Islandia or Ursula K. Le
