Notes on the Invention of Pern
    by Anne McCaffrey
Thirty years ago come this May, I sat down in my living room in Sea Cliff, Long Island, to think up new critters for a storyand came up with dragons, their symbiotic partners, and Pern. I spent all day, until the kids got home from school, setting out the parameters of the story, as well as the world that needed the special abilities of the dragons I envisaged as Pern's renewable air-defense system. Mind you, I cheated a bit: I used an Earth-type planet. And why not? Carl Sagan had told the Science Fiction Writers of America at their annual Nebula banquet that there were quite likely thousands of Earth-type planets in the universe. So that was within the realms of possibility. What wasn't likely, though I learned this later from Dr. Jack Cohen, was the development of humanoid species from a similar primordial stew. But I didn't need humans. I needed the critters. The first yarn, "Weyr Search," wrote out at about 26,000 words. John Campbell, who bought it for Analog

Author Interview A Moment with Anne McCaffrey by
    J. M. Cornwell
Living ships, crystal singers, and dragons, oh, my. We're off to see the singer of songs and writer of tales whose dreams and fantasies we have read and reread some since childhood. If you haven't visited Anne McCaffrey's worlds, now is the time. Pick a world, any world, and watch it come to life. Be part of the landscape, laugh and work with the people. Face your fears and live your dreams. Find your destiny. From Pern, where men and women protect their world on winged, teleporting, fire-breathing dragons, to Ballybran where those who successfully host a symbiont and are gifted (or cursed) with perfect pitch, cut mountains that reverberate with their voices to supply the worlds of the Federated Sentient Planets with the crystals that power space flight throughout their galaxies. These are but two worlds of the many Ms. McCaffrey has created and populated over the last nearly four decades. There are sentient space ships that sing, think, and feel, but need brawn humanoids to go where they cannot. There's a telepathic queen who spawned a dynasty of telepaths, an orphan found by three rough miners who is a human-unicorn hybrid, a planet where furred dinosaurs fly strange skies, and many, many others.

Last updated November, 1998 I have some pages devoted to some of the best active fantasy writers. Tad Williams Author of River of Blue Fire Otherland , and the series The Dragon Bone Chair Mark Helprin Author of Winters Tale, A Soldier of the Great War Guy Gavriel Kay Author of Tigana, A Song for Arbonne Robert Van Gulik Author of The Judge Dee Mystery novels Gene Wolfe Author of The Book of the New Sun (four novels) and The Long Sun (also four novels)... This leads to a site all about my favorite game: Ultima Online . I have spent far too much time on this game (and not enough time on my web site...).
    The great works of Fantasy
Some of the best fantasy ever written (including the writing by Lord Dunsany and Morrison) is no longer in print. This is a sad state of affairs, but someday, all of the world's literature will be available for download (for a fee) via the next generation internet and this current situation will just be like a bad dream. The following are a small sampling of the best fantasy novels.
    • The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. If you haven't read the Lord of the Rings, don't think for a second that you understand fantasy. Although Tolkien didn't invent the genre of Fantasy, everything written since 1955 has been directly influenced by this book. One can quibble with aspects of his story but, this remains one of the most wonderful stories ever written, a testament to the power and vitality of the English language.

IMAGE #26 Like most would-be writers, I've invented my own little worlds to set some of my stories in. Some are stand-alones, others are interdependent stories that build on each other. These kinds of stories require a lot of notes to keep all the details straight, and at the moment I have two of these 'universes' that I write stories about. The bulk of them take place in an alternate history where the Russians landed on the moon in 1972, right before the end of the Apollo Program, necessitating a more vigorous US space program throughout the 1970s. The other of these 'universes' - completely unrelated to the space program one - concerns a small, fictional 8 th continent, about 1/2 the size of Australia, located in the south pacific ocean about half-way between New Zealand and South America. This continent, named 'New Dixie', was discovered by the CSS Escambia in late 1961, and was settled principally by American Indians and Confederate expatriates in the 20 years following the Civil War. This is a very early sketch of New Dixie, which I doodled at work one day to try and sort out it's physical details

, controversies and perplexities, undo us."
    John Donne
Personally I always find the marginalia the best bit. Still, Donne was speaking theologically, so perhaps he's got a point. Anyway, if you want marginalia, this is it. Here are some books I've enjoyed recently. Islandia Austin Tappan Wright Published in 1945, this huge utopian novel remains for me one of the great achievements of literature. Wright was not a great writer but his vision of this ideal country, this land of Islandia is a beguiling and entrancing picture. The land itself is the main character of this book and Wright presents us with a country and a way of life that is at once highly idealised and yet ultimately believable. You cannot read this book without wanting to go there, or without thinking that Islandia is the way life should be. Order from Amazon.com The Exploits of Engelbrecht Maurice Richardson I was led to this book via Michael Moorcock's 'Fantasy: The 100 Best Books' - and even then the book was difficult to find. Eventually I tracked down a copy on Bibliofind and it was the best $20 I've ever spent. The hero of the title is Englebrecht, Dwarf Surrealist Boxer, a plucky member of the Surrealist Sportsman's Club. Engelbrecht's opponents in this series of hilarious tales include fighting for the championship against a grandfather clock, playing surrealist Rugby against aliens on the moon (his side included Karl Marx and Salvador Dali at full-back) and winning an election by promising witches the right to vote. Hilarious, bizarre, outrageous, wonderful. The original version is superbly illustrated by James Boswell. It's now back in print, or you can search for a second-hand copy. Be prepared to pay high prices, though.
