WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
"Every great and original writer, in proportion as he is great and original, must himself create the taste by which he is to be relished." Birthplace

Cockermouth, Cumberland
Education
Hawkshead Grammar School, near Windermere; St John's College, Cambridge
Other jobs
Some small but fortuitous legacies in his youth and adulthood made it possible for him to concentrate solely on writing. In 1813, his appointment as distributor of stamps for Westmorland brought him much needed financial stability. He succeeded Robert Southey as poet laureate in 1843 at the age of 73. Did you know?

What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
    Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind; In the primal sympathy Which having been must ever be; In the soothing thoughts that spring Out of human suffering; In the faith that looks through death, In years that bring the philosophic mind. C OMPOSED ON THE N IGHT AFTER H IS R ECITATION OF A P OEM ON THE G ROWTH OF AN I NDIVIDUAL M IND
F riend of the Wise ! and Teacher of the Good !
Into my heart have I received that Lay
More than historic, that prophetic Lay
Wherein (high theme by thee first sung aright)
Of the foundations and the building up
Of a Human Spirit thou hast dared to tell
What may be told, to the understanding mind
Revealable ; and what within the mind
By vital breathings secret as the soul
Of vernal growth, oft quickens in the heart
Thoughts all too deep for words !
    Theme hard as high !
Of smiles spontaneous, and mysterious fears (The first-born they of Reason and twin-birth), Of tides obedient to external force, And currents self-determined, as might seem, Or by some inner Power ; of moments awful, Now in thy inner life, and now abroad, When power streamed from thee, and thy soul received The light reflected, as a light bestowed Of fancies fair, and milder hours of youth, Hyblean murmurs of poetic thought Industrious in its joy, in vales and glens

    Expostulation and Reply
"WHY, William, on that old grey stone,
Thus for the length of half a day,
Why, William, sit you thus alone,
    And dream your time away?
"Where are your books?that light bequeathed
To Beings else forlorn and blind!
Up! up! and drink the spirit breathed
From dead men to their kind.
"You look round on your Mother Earth,
As if she for no purpose bore you; 10
As if you were her first-born birth,
And none had lived before you!"
One morning thus, by Esthwaite lake,
When life was sweet, I knew not why, To me my good friend Matthew spake, And thus I made reply: "The eyeit cannot choose but see; We cannot bid the ear be still; Our bodies feel, where'er they be, Against or with our will. "Nor less I deem that there are Powers Which of themselves our minds impress; That we can feed this mind of ours In a wise passiveness. "Think you, 'mid all this mighty sum Of things for ever speaking, That nothing of itself will come, But we must still be seeking? "Then ask not wherefore, here, alone
