Virginia Woolf, 1882-1941
Biographical note
Virginia Woolf (January 25, 1882 - March 28, 1941) was a English author and feminist. Born Adeline Virginia Stephens in London she was brought up and educated at home. In 1895 following the death of her mother she had the first of numerous nervous breakdowns. Following the death of her father (Sir Leslie Stephen, a literary critic) in 1904, she moved with her sister and two brothers to a house in Bloomsbury. She began writing professionally in 1905, initially for the Times Literary Supplement. In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf, a civil servant and political theorist. Her first novel, The Voyage Out, was published in 1915. Between the wars, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury group. In March 1941, Woolf drowned herself in the River Ouse, near her Romdell residence. She had published ten (?) novels and over 500 essays.

The emphasis is on secondary literature about Virginia Woolf: books, chapters in books, dissertations, and articles about her life and her work. There is also a large amount of primary literature by Virginia Woolf, and also primary and secondary literature about the members of the Bloomsbury Group. If you notice any omissions or errors, or have any comments, please email me. You are also welcome to contact me about difficulties using the Bibliography, but I probably won’t be able to help with installing the Cardbox Client or getting it to run. Frauen-Biographie der Woche: Virginia Woolf
geboren am 25. Januar 1882 in London englische Schriftstellerin 120.

Woolf, Virginia (Stephen) Woolf, Virginia (Stephen), , English novelist and essayist; daughter of Sir Leslie Stephen . A successful innovator in the form of the novel, she is considered a significant force in 20th-century fiction. She was educated at home from the resources of her father's huge library. In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf, a critic and writer on economics, with whom she set up the Hogarth Press in 1917. Their home became a gathering place for a circle of artists, critics, and writers known as the Bloomsbury group . As a novelist Woolf's primary concern was to represent the flow of ordinary experience. Her emphasis was not on plot or characterization but on a character's consciousness, his thoughts and feelings, which she brilliantly illuminated by the stream of consciousness technique. She did not limit herself to one consciousness, however, but slipped from mind to mind, particularly in

Woolf, Virginia To the Lighthouse
Genre Novel (192 pp.) Keywords Children Communication Death and Dying Empathy ... Time Summary The Ramsay family are spending the summer in their holiday house on the Isle of Skye. Mr. Ramsay, a mathematician, and his wife, who runs the home, have eight children, including the beautiful Prue, who is likely to be married soon, and James, the youngest, still fiercely attached to his mother. There are also assorted guests, including Charles Tansley, one of Mr. Ramsay's students; Lily Briscoe, a keenly observant painter; and Mr. Carmichael, an opium-addicted poet. James wants to be taken by boat to visit the lighthouse and his mother encourages him, but his father, enraging James, says it'll be impossible because of the weather. That night Mrs. Ramsay gives a dinner party where she orchestrates the complex dynamics of the family and their guests into a perfect social unit, which is presented as a kind of work of art.

Stephen Cook retraces Virginia Woolf's footsteps over the crest of the South Downs to Charleston, which has become the group's rural shrine Stephen Cook
    Guardian Saturday October 9, 1999
There were dozens of mornings in the 20s and 30s when the novelist Virginia Woolf left her home in the village of Rodmell for the six-mile walk across the river and along the South Downs to see her sister at Charleston Farmhouse. Once you've climbed out of the valley, it's an airy, exhilarating route, whatever the weather: the English Channel and the harbour of Newhaven appear suddenly on your right, and the chalk-and-green escarpment stretches in front of you like a breaking wave. But there was one day in 1941 when Virginia, suffering from deep depression, never got beyond the low ground: instead of crossing the footbridge near Southease station for the ascent of Itford Hill, she threw herself into the river and drowned.
