by George Woodcock Mohandas Gandhi was the first of the great activist theoreticians who changed the shape of our world and the form of our thought during the present century. In 1894, nine years before Lenin gathered his Bolshevik faction within the Russian Social Democratic Party, and a quarter of a century before Mao Tse-tong embraced the revolution as a way of life, Gandhi began his activities among the Indians who lived a marginal and oppressed existence as merchants and indentured servants in South Africa. Combining thought with experience, Gandhi devised his own techniques of struggle arising out of the actual circumstances there, and in 1906, only three years after the Bolsheviks stepped onto the stage of history, he announced his pioneer Satyagraha campaign, developing nonviolent resistance as a discipline of social struggle. Truth perceived by individuals must always be relative, changing according to human contacts, developing as people better understand each other, their circumstances and themselves. Gandhi never set out to develop a fixed and final doctrine, but emphasized that his practice of Ahimsa, or nonviolence, was always experimental in a continuing quest for Truth, a quest that could never end because human understanding was incapable of comprehending the Absolute.

It is no understatement for ECW Press to describe George Woodcock as "Canada's best-known literary critic"; certainly, he is one of the country's most prolific reviewe rs and critical essayists. His career as a critic has been a lengthy one and has given him the opportunity to observe and comment upon Canadian literature's development of an increasingly confident voice and its increasingly more serious consideration by the literary community both in the United States and internationally. Nearly a decade ago ECW approached Woodcock with the intent of his writing a s eries of introductions to the series of critical analyses entitled Canadian Writers and Their Works.

Amor De Cosmos
Amor De Cosmos, September 1874.
(August 20, 1825 - July 4, 1897)
Amor De Cosmos played a major role in bringing British Columbia into Confederation. He promoted union with Canada through his newspaper and, as a founding member of the Confederation League , helped organize the Yale Conference that formalized the demands for union. For a time he held seats in both the provincial and federal legislatures, and served as British Columbia's premier from 1872 to 1874. Amor De Cosmos was born William Alexander Smith in Windsor, Nova Scotia, the son of Jesse Smith and Charlotte Esther Weems (Wemyss). He attended a private school in Windsor, before continuing his studies at King's College School. Around 1840, his family moved to Halifax, where De Cosmos joined the Dalhousie College debating club, attended a grammar school by night and took a day job as a clerk in a wholesale grocer. In 1852, he left this job to join the California Gold Rush, travelling there by way of New York and St. Louis. Once he arrived in California, he began working as a photographer. His brother later joined him there, and the two began a business venture. It was while he was in California, in 1854, that he changed his name to Amor De Cosmos, out of a desire to express, as he said, his "love of order, beauty, the world, the universe." In 1858, De Cosmos moved to the colony of Vancouver Island, settling in Victoria. In December of that year, he founded a newspaper, the

The two plots that are carried through out the book are interwoven at the most interesting places and at the end everything finally falls into place. Section - George Woodcock's foreword George Woodcock's foreword THIS BOOK shows how a small debating assembly grew into the national representative body of British trade unionism, sharing in the making of government policies, taking part in administering major social services and meeting on equal terms with the spokesmen of the nation's employers. In the course of that evolution the TUC has been instrumental in provoking crucial developments in the structure and purposes of British governments, a radical transformation of British society and fundamental changes in the structure of British industry. Intended to be a forum where trade unionists could discuss their common problems and a shop window for trade unionism, the annual Trades Union Congress soon became a focus for the views of working people about all the questions affecting their working lives. Britain's workers made the TUC the vehicle by which their views could be conveyed to Ministers. Slowly the TUC gained competence in articulating those views; slowly and hesitantly, though speeded intermittently by the urgencies of two world wars, governments recognised the essential contribution which the TUC could bring to the conduct of national affairs, by reason of its capacity to represent the collective industrial experience of working people and to apply that experience realistically in the resolution of national industrial, economic and social questions. Slowly and hesitantly, too, employers similarly accepted the TUC's right and competence in industrial affairs.
