Homepage News and Events Rainforest Relief News > Santa Monica Uses Tropical Wood Benches Santa Monica Installs Benches Made of Ipê Febraury 18, 2003 Rainforest Relief has learned that the city of Santa Monica, California, has installed dozens of benches made with ipê, violated their own 1991 law that bars the city from purchasing tropical hardwoods. Recently, David Wolfberg, Rainforest Relief Los Angeles chapter director, discovered the benches. Tim Keating, RR's director, confirmed that the benches are ipê, a wood logged from the Amazon rainforests of Brazil, mostly illegally (for more on illegal logging in Brazil, click here We found that the benches were manufactured by Landscape Forms, a Michigan company. On Landscape Forms’ website they state that they are “chain-of-custody” certified by the Rainforest Alliance SmartWood™ program. However, this certification can be confusing to the public, leading people to believe that all the wood the company sells is certified, which isn't the case. Rainforest Relief is working on a report to expose this situation. Dave is working on follow-up with Santa Monica to strengthen their law and educate the town’s officials.

Artist Statement ANCESTORS I see Faces everywhere: cracks in the ceiling, hiding in wood grain, alongside cliff walls; making their presence known in the interweaving of tree branches, clouds and miscellaneous shadows... Could this be our Ancestors reminding us? They are here. The "Ancestors" series is a collection of four different images that cycle through the seasons. Each of the four images bears a slightly different theme. The four "Ancestors" paintings (from which the series gets its title) are about the vital essence of souls, spirit and rhythm. The "Blue Genes" paintings are a playful celebration of family and friends. "Matriarchs" honor our foremothers. "Recessive Genes" represent the generations of life through descendants or our forefathers. Each of the four images is recreated in the different palettes representative of each of the four seasons, creating sixteen paintings in all. Wood to Take Student Recruitment in Bold New Directions Monica Wood, Director of Student Recruitment "University is a lot more than books and lectures," says Monica Wood, Saint Mary's new Director of Student Recruitment. "It's flesh and blood experiences." Wood assumes her newly created position after working in enrollment services at the University of Winnipeg. She says, "We have to explain in concrete terms what the Saint Mary's experience is. A lot of universities haven't taken the time to develop an authentic story. We have to create a story that is so compelling that students will come here." Wood is initiating a collaborative model that will include members of her newly assembled recruitment team. Kemale Pinar, who previously worked with International Activities is now the Manager of International Recruitment. There are two new recruitment officers Samantha Anderson, Saint Mary's past SMUSA president and Kim Stright, a recent graduate who worked in admissions. Different members of the university community from athletics, the Division of Continuing Education, Student Services, to The Atlantic Centre will be involved in representing Saint Mary's at recruiting sessions.
