You can go to Thomas Wolfe's home again
May 5, 2004 ASHEVILLE, N.C. Steve Hill, manager of the Thomas Wolfe Memorial for 26 years now, remembers all too well the night he got the call that the beloved house was ablaze: July 24, 1998. ADVERTISEMENT "It was 3:20 a.m. and they told me that the roof was burning. And they said, `We just don't know how it's going to go.' " At about 8 that morning, Hill recalled, "they did an initial assessment and the engineers decided the foundation and sidewalls were intact. But once you walked through, you couldn't fathom some of the things ever being fixed." Amazingly, most of them have been. The reopening festivities on May 28-31, Wolfe's second coming of sorts, will include a rededication ceremony, living history and city tours, and authors' talks. Hill, an Asheville native, had spent his adult life tending to the Old Kentucky Home, the name for the boardinghouse run by Wolfe's mother, Julia Wolfe. Thomas Wolfe wrote none too flatteringly about the house, which he called "Dixieland," in his autobiographical novel "Look Homeward, Angel." He lived there from 1906 to 1916, when he went off to the University of North Carolina. "Look Homeward, Angel" was published in 1929 and has never been out of print; his novel with the oft-quoted title "You Can't Go Home Again" was published posthumously in 1940. Scholars still study Wolfe's writing, and he still has followers. There is a Thomas Wolfe Society. Before the house burned, about 30,000 people visited yearly.

Making the world safe for hypocrisy. There is no spectacle on earth more appealing than that of a beautiful woman in the act of cooking dinner for someone she loves. If a man has a talent and cannot use it, he has failed. If he has a talent and uses only half of it, he has partly failed. If he has a talent and learns somehow to use the whole of it, he has gloriously succeeded, and won a satisfaction and a triumph few men ever know.

Tshirts African Cichlids A young man is so strong, so mad, so certain, and so lost. He has everything and he is able to use nothing.
The whole conviction of my life now rests upon the belief that loneliness, far from being a rare and curious phenomenon, peculiar to myself and to a few other solitary men, is the central and inevitable fact of human existence. Men will often say they have 'found themselves' when they have really been worn down into a groove by the brutal and compulsive force of circumstance. If a man has talent and can't use it, he's failed. If he uses only half of it, he has partly failed. If he uses the whole of it, he has succeeded, and won a satisfaction and triumph few men ever know. Publishing is a very mysterious business. It is hard to predict what kind of sale or reception a book will have, and advertising seems to do very little good.

Biographies: Thomas Wolfe (1900-38)
Thomas Wolfe was an enormously popular American novelist during the middle of this 20th Century. He left an indelible mark on American letters. His opulent language and unique literary style have elevated his life to legendary status through his four autobiographical novels. Thomas Wolfe was perhaps the most autobiographical of America's major novelists. His boyhood memories provided some interesing insights into boys clothing and hair styles in the first decade of the 20th Century. He particularly remembers the long ringlet curls he had to wear, even after he had started school.
Childhood
Thomas Clayton Wolfe was born in 1900. He grew up in Asheville, North Carolina. During his youth, Asheville was a middle class mountain resort town dazzled by real estate speculation.
Wolfe's Mother, Julia E. Wolfe, was a woman of the mountain. She was ahead of her time as a successful female real estate speculator. Wolfe felt her interest was a disease that interfered with her duties as a wife and mother.
William Oliver Wolfe, his father, was a stonecutter from Pennsylvania. He made his living as a tombstone maker. He had a great vigor for living and a constant need to hurl himself against the prison bars of his dreary provincial life. While he provided well for his large family, he delighted in all the robust sensual aspects of life. He drankheavily and when in this state often verbally stormed at his family with great torrents of rhetoric and much quoting from Shakespeare. Wolfe portrays both of his parents with great spirit and good humored satire.

Seventeen thousand people, me included, all of us driving out Route 421, out to the stock-car races at the North Wilkesboro Speedway, 17,000 going out to a five-eighths-mile stock-car track with a Coca-Cola sign out front. This is not to say there is no preaching and shouting in the South this morning. There is preaching and shouting. Any of us can turn on the old automobile transistor radio and get all we want: There are also commercials on the radio for Aunt Jemima grits, which cost ten cents a pound. There are also the Gospel Harmonettes, singing: "If you dig a ditch, you better dig two. . . ." There are also three fools in a panel discussion on the New South, which they seem to conceive of as General Lee running the new Dulcidreme Labial Cream factory down at Griffin, Georgia.
