Thomas Wolfe
This stamp celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Wolfe and is the 17th stamp in the Literary Arts series. Wolfe is considered one of the greatest American autobiographical novelists of the 20th century. Born Oct. 3, 1900, Wolfe is best known for his novel "Look Homeward, Angel" (1929), which is based on his early life in North Carolina. He also wrote "Of Time and the River" (1935), "The Web and the Rock" (1939) and "You Can't Go Home Again" (1940). His last two books were published posthumously. Wolfe died Sept. 15, 1938, at the age of 37.
Artist Michael J. Deas brings to light a pensive Thomas Wolfe, complementing the author's image with that of an angel and the titles of some of his literary works.

Who is Thomas Wolfe?
Who is Thomas Wolfe. One of the 20th Century's greatest American authors. He gave the literary community some of the greatest writings ever.
Thomas Wolfe was born in 1900 in Asheville, North Carolina. Tom and brother Ben lived with their mother in a boarding house that she ran while their sister and father lived in an old family home. There was trouble in Toms family from a very early age and due to the tension and differences, his parents split the family. Toms mother and fathers separation early in his life and gave him a great loneliness that turned him to books. Thomas Wolfe wrapped himself into the books he would read and they came alive to him and he began to drift away into another world that was not torn apart. Tom used the pains and torments from his childhood and young adulthood to passionately write his greatest novels. Even though he died at a very young age, Thomas Wolfe left the literary community an inheritance. Tom, an avid reader at a very young age, also became a very intelligent student. Tom enrolled in the University of North Carolina at the age of fifteen. Toms passion for writing flourished during his college days. While an undergraduate, he was a member of the Carolina Playmakers. The Carolina Playmakers consisted of a group of students that wrote and performed their own plays. Tom discovered a desire to become a playwright during these years at the University of North Carolina. bodyOffer(29064) After his graduation from the University of North Carolina in 1920, he borrowed money to enroll at Harvard. While at Harvard he studied drama intensively. By 1922, Thomas Wolfe had completed his masters degree. Over the next couple years he would teach at New York University, attempt unsuccessfully to sell his plays and travel abroad. It was during this time of teaching and traveling that he completed his first novel, Look Homeward, Angel.

First Edition Of Time and the River
Thomas Wolfe's Epic Novel of Human Life - 1935 Wolfe, Thomas
OF TIME AND THE RIVER New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1935 First edition. 8vo, publisher's original dark blue cloth in the decorated dustjacket. [11], 912. A handsome copy, the jacket in nice condition with only a bit of shelf rubbing to the edges. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Wolfe here reaffirms the tribute fo Sinclair Lewis in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech when Mr. Lewis said that "he mave have a chance to be the greatest American writer...in fact I dont see why he should not bne on of the greatest world writers.:" OF TIME AND THE RIVER is "so deep and spacious that it deals with the whole of life."... 'It is an epic of the quest ad pilgrimage of youth, specifically of an American, but essentially of the young man in all lands and ages. This pilgrimage begins in Altamont, the hero's birthplace, and takes him through a great variety of adventures and experiences-to Boston and New York, thence to Oxford and finally to Paris and the countryside of France, from which he returns to America, irresistibly drawn back to the great, sprawling continent he had fled in bitterness and disgust.
For sweep and richness; for diversity of scene and background, variety of sharply individualized characters; for drama, great gusty laughter and profoundly moving tragedy, it stands alone-a novel with the mass and movement of a great epic. In it the whole web of that America which is its undrlying theme is reflected:...with all its clamor, naked struggle, blind and brutal strife, with all its violence, ignorance and cruelty, and with its terror, joy and mystery, its undying hope, its everlasting life...' (From an advertisement for the first edition.)

"The u n i t y that binds us all to g e t h e r, that makes this earth a family , and a l l men b r o t h e r s and the sons of God , is love ~ Thomas Wolfe Writer Thomas Clayton Wolfe (1900-1938), born on this day in Asheville, North Carolina, was best known for his haunting fictionalized autobiography, Look Homeward, Angel (1929), which explored and explained the "strange and bitter magic of life." This powerful small town recollection, written with uninhibited emotion, inspired such novelists as Norman Mailer and Jack Kerouac "I don't know yet what I am capable of doing," wrote Thomas Wolfe to his mother, "but, by God , I have genius I know it too well to blush behind it." His novel exposed hypocrisy and caused a controversy at home. "Most of the time we think we're sick, it's all in the mind," observed the 6'3" Wolfe who wrote with passion and rhetoric and believed in the greatness of America and heroism of its people. "There are some people who have the quality of richness and joy in them and they communicate it to everything they touch," he once wrote. "It is first of all a physical quality; then it is a quality of the

Badly damaged by a fire in 1998, the structure has undergone a $2.1 million restoration.
