"There is no category of human activity in which the dead do not outnumber the living many times over. Most beautiful children are dead. Most soldiers, most cowards. The fairest women and the most learned menall are dead. Their bodies repose in caskets, in sarcophagi, beneath arches of rude stone, everywhere under the earth. Their spirits haunt our minds, ears pressed to the bones of our foreheads. Who can say how intently they listen as we speak, or for what word?"

Check out website: www.orionbooks.co.uk T his is an excellent novel but it's not fantastic. It is a mainstream novel, marketed as a fantasy because Wolfe is a fantasy writer but really it is no more of the genre than 'Picture This', Joseph Heller's quirky book about Rembrandt. Perhaps Heller's book should be reclassified as fantasy?
The narrator is Alden Dennis Weer, an old man looking back on his life and sometimes (this is the only fantasy element) re-entering it. Remembering himself as a middle-aged man visiting the Doctor he suddenly speaks to the Doctor as an old man, asking advice on the ailments that will plague him in the Doctor's future. Such incidents are fantasy blips though, in a generally mainstream narrative of small-town America, of interesting neighbours and dotty relatives.
There are stories within stories. Weer listens to one of his Aunt's suitors telling a tale then goes to bed to read, whereupon the story he reads is narrated. Despite some skipping about the main path of the book is linear, from past to future. It is divided into sections each with a main character.

New! On Blue's Waters , the first volume in the "Short Sun" series (a sequel series to the "Long Sun"), is scheduled for publication in October 1999 by Tor. Future titles (already sold to Tor) include In Green's Jungles and Return to Whorl Pre-order On Blue's Water's from Amazon. Gene Wolfe is, in my opinion, the greatest living science fiction writer. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia calls him "the most important writer in the field," so I'm not just a loony. Algis Budrys compared him to Mozart. He's really that good. Of other authors, he is perhaps most similar to (and borrows from) Jorge Luis Borges, Robert Graves, Jack Vance, and (in his short fiction) Orson Scott Card. His prose is masterful but often opaque; Wolfe is not light reading nor will you understand him on the first try. This web page is intended as a preview and encouragement to those who have not read him yet, a guide for those first encountering him, and a resource for those of us who are still wading the shallows of meaning in his works. Borges: Influence and References
Gene Wolfe An American author of science fiction and fantasy, Gene Wolfe has been hailed by critics and fans alike as one of the clearest visionaries in American literature. A Borges influence is most strongly felt in his "Book of the New Sun" series, an incredibly dense and beautifully intricate tetralogy that tells the story of Severian, whose chosen career is that of professional torturer.
The world that Wolfe paints is a tired and already decadent future, rich with anachronisms and run down by an apocalyptic sense of entropy. He plays with language and ideas with a deftness that makes the ancient seem novel, and the unfamiliar appear to be laden with the weight of decaying traditions. As one of Wolfe's favorite authors, Borges played an important part in the creation of Severian's world, as he admitted in an interview in the book Across the Wounded Galaxies. He also brought to life two creatures directly from Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings and turned them free in the pages of his universe: a giant named Baldanders, and an enigmatic "fish" that swims in the mysterious mirrors of Father Inire. Below I have provided an excerpt from the 1986 interview with Larry McCaffery: LM: That kind of suggestive use for archaic or unfamiliar words is evident throughout the tetralogy, and I'm sure a lot of readers had the same mistaken impression that I did that you were making up these wondrous, bizarre words especially since the use of neologisms is so common in SF. Why did you choose to use mainly real words rather than inventing your own?

His name is given to him by the healer that attends to his wounds when he first appears. He cannot remember anything of his past and each day that passes takes the memories he should be building away. From one day to the next, he remembers nothing. Using a stylus and parchment he records the days' events so that he can read it every day to understand what is going on. It is his parchment we are reading. The events throughout the first book are highlighted by his meetings with gods and goddesses, even magical creatures appear to him. The people around him seem to help but some merely hinder, his only real companion being a slave girl, Io, given to him in the Temple of the Shining God. There is also the black man he found with, he speaks a foreign tongue so he is more mysterious than Latro.

From archive (archive) Subject: Author Lists: Gene Wolfe From: JWenn.ESAE@XEROX.COM Date: 18 Apr 89 12:33:29 GMT Gene Wolfe. His early work is mixed ("The Fifth Head of Cerberus" is recommended, and I also liked "Peace", but that's an individual quirk). Coming into the 1980's is where he really shines. "The Book of the New Sun". Words fail me. It's just amazing, for the use of language if nothing else. After that, it becomes even more subjective than usual. I rather like "Soldier of the Mist", but I'm withholding judgement until the series is complete. Of all his story collections (and I haven't read his recent ones), "The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories" is the best. The beginning Wolfe reader should probably start on "The Island of Doctor Death..." or "The Fifth Head of Cerberus", before going on to "The Shadow of the Torturer" or other works. Personally, I must be in the correct frame of mind to read Wolfe. This is stuff that you have to pay attention to when you read, not skim over for entertainment. But the rewards make it worth all the effort. Give him a try. [C] == Short Story Collection. [CP] == Chapbook (a very short book, or pamphlet)..
