Our Links with a Literary Giant
by Mike Green
"My happiest days as a boy were spent near Bridgnorth. The only thing I didn't like in my formative, or Stableford period, was the social stuff. Owners of big estates round about would keep inviting me for the weekend." The author of these two quotes went on to pen 92 comic novels, some 18 plays and 35 musicals and still holds the record for having the most shows (five) on Broadway running at any one time. So who was this literary giant, and why are we in the Bridgnorth district not trumpeting this rich legacy from our battlements? Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, the creator of Jeeves and Wooster, was born in 1881, but it was not until he was 14 that his parents moved to "The Old House" at Stableford, which became his holiday home when released from Dulwich College. That house, Hay's Bank, has recently been sold, having been for 60 years in the family of the late Judge Collis. Stableford and the lands which surround it in a 15 or 20 mile radius were P.G.'s happy hunting ground and also the basis for an imaginary world at the centre of which stood Blandings Castle, the quintessential stately home of England.

Who is P.G. Wodehouse, and why all this bally fuss?
Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (known affectionately as "Plum", a derivation of his first name) started out life as a child (but didn't we all, once?) and was soon working in a bank, but found that his real calling lay in writing. He is most well known for his short stories, focusing on the lives of bachelor gentlemen (and their gentlemen's gentlemen, the most famous of which is Jeeves) in an England that never changes - it is always sometime in the early 1920's, and war is never thought of. Some men are rich, others need rich men as friends, women exist only to entangle men in matrimony, and no gentleman would be caught dead without his evening clothes. For a list of Plum's works, please see Appendix A

Arguably his finest non-omnibus short story collection. Story for story, its hard to imagine ANYONE writing material as consistently, inventively, and intoxicatingly funny as this. If your knowledge of P.G. Wodehouse is only of the Jeeves stories (which are wonderful in and of themselves), this is a terrifc way to start acquainting yourself with some of the other denizens of his fictional unvierse. Contains a mixture of Drones Club and Mulliner stories, and includes "Uncle Fred Flits By", recently voted as Plums best-ever short story by members of P.G. Wodehouse societies worldwide. E scritor anglo-estadounidense.

Recent Up a category Mystery of the Castle of P.G. Wodehouse Solved? Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse is perhaps most famous for his valet Jeeves, and his stories set at Blandings Castle. We're forever looking for the places about which famous literary works are written, and now fans believe they have discovered the true location of the famous Wodehouse castle. P. G. Wodehouse Appreciation Page Tom Kreitzberg writes, "Throughout his stories, Wodehouse presents a view of the world which differs from his fans would say, improves upon the focus most people have. For a variety of reasons, pigs, newts, and statues of the Infant Samuel at Prayer play significant roles in the Wodehousian view, while such things as death, taxes, and work are crowded towards the O. P. wings." Wodehouse.org
