P. G. Wodehouse
Pelham ("Plum") Grenville Wodehouse (pronounced "Woodhouse") was the greatest writer in English of this centurybut sadly overlooked by most `serious' critics because he wrote comedy and lyrics for musicals. As a lyricist, Wodehouse was the father of the modern musical. In the early part of this century Kern, Bolton and Wodehouse wrote a number of musicals for a tiny New York theatre, the Princess and transformed the American muscial forever. Before, the musical comedy had "exotic" locales and simple music and was based on the operetta of the 19th century. Bolton, Kern and Wodehouse made it a play with music, set in contemporaneous society and featuring ordinary people. Furthermore the lyrics of the song were an integral part of the plot. The pinnacle of this sort of music is surely Bill , written in 1917 and used by Kern in Showboat a haunting song about a man so ordinary that the girl can't explain why she loves (Just My) Bill And as a wordsmith he has no equal. He could, as Evelyn Waugh put it, "produce on average three uniquely brilliant and original similes to every page". His stories were not written to be "important" or to appeal to critics; they were straightforward humour. He was a punctilious and diligent writer whose only aim was to make as many people as possible laugh. Here is an excerpt from the introduction to Summer Lightning A certain criticfor such men, I regret to say, do existmade the nasty remark about my last novel [

About the Author
English comic novelist, short story writer, lyricist and playwright, best known as the creator of Jeeves, the perfect 'gentleman's gentleman,' Bertie Wooster of the Drones Club, a young bachelor aristocrat, and the absentminded Lord Emsworth of the Blandings Castle. Most of Wodehouse's works gently parodied the British aristocracy of the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II Wodehouse lived in the United States. During the decades, Wodehouse's picture of England eventually become nostalgic. "You know, Jeeves, you're by way of being rather a topper."
"I endeavour to give satisfaction, sir."
"One in a million, by Jove!"
"It is very kind of you to say so, sir."
"Well, that's about all, then, I think."
"Very good, sir."

(from 'Jeeves Takes Charge') Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in Guildford, Surrey, as the son of Henry Ernest Wodehouse, a British judge in Hong Kong, and Eleanor (Deane) Wodehouse. Within the family, Wodehouse's first name was abbreviated to "Plum" and later also his wife and friends used this name. Until the age of four he lived in Hong Kong with his parents. Returning to England, he spent much of his childhood in the care of various aunts. Wodehouse attended boarding schools and received his secondary education at Dulwich College, London, which he always remembered with affection. His first article for which he was paid was 'Some Aspects of Game Captaincy." Wodehouse wrote it for a competition sponsored by

His father was a magistrate in Hong Kong. His mother was visiting her sister in England when her son, soon to be known as Plum or Plummie, was born. Wodehouse was the third of four children. As a child he knew nothing of family life: his parents lived in Hong Kong and as was the custom of the time, sent their first three sons to England for their health and education when Plum was only two. He was looked after by Miss Roper, a complete stranger, until he was five, then attended three small schools as a boarder. He later commented: "Looking back I can see that I was just passed from hand to hand. It was an odd life with no home to go to, but I have always accepted everything that happens to me in a philosophical spirit." In 1894 Wodehouse joined his brother Armine at Dulwich College, where for the first time he gained a sense of stability and belonging. He studied Classics, "the best form of education I could have had as a writer". He joined in sports, served as a prefect, sang in concerts and edited the

There is no doubt that virtually everyone has either read, heard or seen some of Wodehouse work, and the success of the various series over the years prove that his writings are classics. Although criticised by some of writing material that is out of touch, his answer was to treat his stories as a sort of period piece and ignore that it was only fairly recent. He also beleived that there were two ways of writing novels. His was of making it a sort of musical comedy without the music and ignoring real life, the other was to go deep down into life and not give damn. Born in 1881 in Guildford, Surrey, Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was the son of a Civil Servant and was educated at Dulwich College (a place he retained affection for until his death in 1975, and has a number of his effects). He started his working life in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank before giving up the heady heights of finance for writing. And what a writer! He produced around a hundred books (a nightmare for any collector, but a Godsend for any avid reader!), created the characters of Bertie Wooster and his ever-resourceful manservant Jeeves, the environs and inhabitants of Blandings Castle, including the prize porker, The Empress of Blandings, and was also involved in some dozen or so straight plays, and about 250 lyrics for musical comedies. He married in 1914 and became an American citizen in 1955. Twenty years later he was made a Knight of the British Empire in the New Years Honours list, and in an interview said his ambitions had now been achieved. He died on St Valentines day in the same year.
