Editor
The Winthrop Papers project is intended to continue the publication of historically significant papers relating to the Winthrop family. Winthrop materials in the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society include a range of correspondence, commonplace books, printed works, maps, legal documents, portraits, artifacts, and photographs spanning the family's history from fifteenth century England to twentieth century America.
Publication of the modern edition of Winthrop Papers began in 1929 and has to date resulted in the issuance of six volumes of family correspondence down to the year 1653. Under the current editorship of Dr. Francis J. Bremer of Millersville University future publication plans include
  • continuation of volumes of correspondence that will conclude with the period of the American Revolution. Editing of the next volumes in this series is being undertaken by Dr. Mark Peterson of the University of Iowa and Dr. Alison Games of Georgetown University.
  • a second series of volumes that will feature other documents and be topically organized. These will include a volume of

John Winthrop as a Justice of the Peace
It has often been writen that John Winthrop (1588-1649) was a Justice of the Peace in England, that statement frequently being amplified by the "fact" that he presided over his first court at the age of eighteen. The latter claim actually is based on Winthrop presiding over a manorial court session, which he was empowered to do not by being a Justice of the Peace but by virtue of his status as lord of Groton manor. "JPs" were members of the Commission of the Peace, appointed by the crown and no documentation of Winthrops being on the Commission has previously been provided. Employed by the Winthrop Papers Project, Ms Sue Sadler was able to search the appropriate runs of documents in the Public Record Office and as a result has been able to establish Winthrop's tenure on the Commission for Suffolk. According to J. H. Baker, An Introduction to English Legal History , third edition (London, 1990), the system operated as follows: "At intervals a commission of the peace was drawn up for each county, listing the substantial knights and gentry of the area and taking care to include the sages et apris de la leye John Winthrop was appointed to the Commission of the Peace for Suffolk in 1615 and seems to have served continuously till omitted at some point in the mid-1620s, probably the accession of Charles I. He was reinstated in June of 1626 and continued to be listed through 1631 despite his having left England for Massachusetts.

Occasion: Winthrop's acquittal speech before the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The speech, however, has become more important for the principles espoused within it than the particular grievances against Winthrop. According to 19th-century historian James Grahame, "[t]he circumstances in which this address was delivered . . . recall the most interesting scenes of Greek and Roman history; while, in the wisdom, piety, and dignity that it breathes, it resembles the magnanimous vindication of a judge of Israel. Winthrop was not only acquitted by the sentence of the court and the voice of the public, but recommended so prevailingly to the esteem of his fellow-citizens by this and all the other indications of his character that he was chosen Governor of Massachusetts every year after as long as he lived." Classroom Issues and Strategies
The sweeping nature of the journal encompasses social, political, economic, and "daily survival" issues. Thus, it might be wise to focus on an area, or areas, at least to begin with. When looking at cultural or historical implications, consult supplemental information. That is, although Winthrop's writings illuminate his biases and assumptions, they "shape" the history of the period as well as record it. Students are generally shocked by the rigidity of Winthrop's view of the world. Their shock may be addressed by consulting outside sources (e.g., on the Hutchinson affair) and making them aware of Winthrop's assumptions concerning power, patriarchy, etc., as well as the position and voice of women in the Puritan community. However, it might be wise to note, as well, how our twentieth-century notions of what is fair and unfair can sometimes impose themselves upon the cultural environment Winthrop was operating within. Winthrop and the Puritans should be approached not only as philosophical, political, and religious figures, but also as real people who struggled daily against nature, hunger, and disease. Students are often curious about the distinctions between the Covenant of Works, the Covenant of Grace, and the Elect. You might explore the notion of community and social structures and the role of the individual in these structures, or you could discuss the Bible as a typological model for the Puritans, as well as Puritan conceptions of original depravity, limited atonement, grace, and predestination.

Governors of Connecticut John Winthrop From: The Governers of Connecticut
By: Frederick Calvin Norton
Published: 1905
THE brilliant career of John Winthrop, as governor of Connecticut, led the historian, Brancroft, to write that “the New World was full of his praises.” He is generally conceded to have been the most distinguished and scholarly of the early governors of the colony. His father, John Winthrop, commonly called the older, was governor of Massachusetts, and the founder of the famous Winthrop family in America - a family that has produced many able men and women.
John Winthrop, the younger, was born in Groton Manor, England, February 12, 1606. He received a careful education at Trinity College, Dublin, and afterward entered the Inner Temple, where he studied law. Finding this distasteful, he entered the English naval service, sailing with George Villiers, the Duke of Buckingham. He took part in the unsuccessful expedition for the relief of the Protestants at La Rochelle. After a tour on the Continent, Winthrop returned to England in 1629 and found that his father and closest friends were preparing to sail for Massachusetts.
In 1631 he followed his father to New England and was soon elected an assistant in Massachusetts colony. He was one of the settlers of the town of Ipswich, where he owned a large estate. Winthrop returned to England in 1634 On July 7, 1635, articles of agreement were drawn up between Winthrop and Lord Say-andSele, with several others, empowering Winthrop to erect a fort at the mouth of the Connecticut river and creating him governor of the territory for one year. His commission was sealed and delivered on July 15, 1635, and he arrived at the mouth of the river about November 24th of the same year. After his term of office expired Winthrop went to Massachusetts where he busied himself with scientific investigation. He is spoken of as one of the best “chymists” of his age.

Biographical Sketch of John Winthrop
by Oliver Woods
Who was John Winthrop? (1588-1649) John Winthrop was an English gentleman who led the Puritan Great Migration from England to the New World in 1630. He served nine years as governor and ten years as deputy governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony.
Historical Context
Renaissance monarch and Catholic sympathizer, Henry VIII had established the Church of England with himself at its head in the early 1530s. The Puritans, English adherents of the Reformation who sought to purify that church, agitated for reform, but the church resisted. The church's drive to suppress Puritanism melded with the doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings in the reigns of James I (1605-1625) and Charles I (1625-1649). William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, became the official agent of persecution under Charles. Laud's zealous persecution prompted the Great Migration of Puritans to New England between 1630 and 1640, the first wave led by John Winthrop.
Summary of Winthrop's Teaching
The concluding remarks of his Model of Christian Charity sermon delivered on board the Arbella capture John Winthrop's vision for New England: "Beloved, there is now set before us life, and good, death and evil in that we are commanded this day to love the Lord our God, and to love one another to walk in His ways to keep His Commandments and His ordinance, and His laws, and the articles of our covenant with Him that we may live and be multiplied, and that the Lord our God may bless us in the land whither we go to possess it...For we must consider that we shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us...." [Find the whole sermon
