Main
The Wood Wife by Terri Windling I read this book based on the recommendations of two friends whose book advice I respect. We don't always read the same things, but it's fun when our tastes converge. The Wood Wife is most easily categorized as fantasy and takes place in modern-day Los Angeles, Tucson area (primarily), and London. Maggie inherits the literary estate of her friend, poet Davis Cooper, along with his house in the mountains near Tucson, Arizona. She has reasons for wanting to leave LA and decides to take inventory of Cooper's house. To say her life is changed forever by what she finds there would not be too melodramatic.

A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale
This enchanting book is a lovely mix of children's tale, art book and coffee table conversation piece. Terri Windling's story and Wendy Froud's handmade dolls blend beautifully into a book that will be loved by both children and adults. The story follows young Sneezle, a young tree root faery who is excited about staying up for the Midsummer faery celebration. In his efforts to help with the preparations, he ends up bumbling, stumbling and making mistakes so that those he wanted to help send him away. Saddened, Sneezle wanders off to have his dinner, and is caught on the poor end of a trade with a pretty handmaiden, Rianna. This leads him to a friendly encounter with a troll, and an important charge to King Oberon's tailors. He meets Twig, another young faery, who has been given a command by King Oberon. In taking on her task, Sneezle becomes a most unlikely hero. Not only does he help his friend Twig, but he also saves the Midsummer Night celebration! However, to tell any more would spoil the charm and mystery of the tale. Sneezle is an adorable hero, admirably created both in words and pictures. The beautiful photographs of Wendy Froud's dolls are charming, evocative and realistic, exactly as I have pictured faeries. They reminded me very much of the etherealness of the Gelflings from

The Winter Child
Once again, the magical team of Terri Windling and Wendy Froud has gifted readers with a story of delight, whimsy and heroism. The calendar says that it's winter, but the air is warm and there is no snow in the Old Oak Wood. None of the fairies can fathom why the seasonal cycle has been broken. Then, King Oberon's favorite cup disappears, right in the middle of the celebration. The most unlikely heroes, Sneezle, the tree root faery, and Twig, one of Queen Titania's handmaidens, volunteer to find the cup, and hopefully find out what has happened to winter. They encounter and thwart great danger from goblins, meet and have tea with wizards, and name a newly hatched baby fairy! The pair rides in a flying shoe and travels the breadth and depths of Old Oak Wood to discover why Lady Winter is not in the faery wood. As before, the two learn more about themselves and the world of Faery. Not only does Sneezle discover depths of bravery, but also Twig learns where her talents really lie. Their adventure leads them to new friends and enemies, and a riddle to solve in order for Winter to come and the seasons to be as they should. I don't want to give away too much of the story it is as enchanting as the pictures! Terri Windling and Wendy Froud enchanted me before with A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale , but this book was even more delightful. Wendy's dolls are beautifully dressed and incredibly lifelike you almost expect them to step off the page! Terri's story is perfect to read aloud to children and adults alike, or to read on a cold winter evening while enjoying mulled cider. Faery lovers of all ages will enjoy this book, which is so beautiful that rather than keeping it in the bookcase, it is proudly on display for all to see. I can hardly wait for Sneezle and Twig's next adventure!

The Borderland series is set in a time and place where the Elflands have returned. Separated from the world we know by the Border, a magical barrier that prevents access between the two except at certain gates, controlled by the Elves. Bordertown is located just on our side of the Border. CC: Borderland authors and Tor Books Dear Nathan, Here are some answers to questions I am frequently asked about Bordertown. Will you please pass this on to the readers of your Borderland Web page?
  • "May fans write Borderland fiction on the web or in fanzines?" I have talked with Patrick Nielsen Hayden at Tor Books about this question, and the answer is basically "yes," but subject to these strict provisions:
    • No characters from existing Borderland stories may be used without express permission from the authors of those stories. Ms. Windling hereby gives permission for the following characters to be used in noncommerical fan fiction: Farrel Din, Gray, Sammy, Wicker Leaf-and-Tree, Thorn Leaf-and-Tree, Will Hernandez. The Borderland world may not be used in any commercial venture whatsoever, including any publication or event for which money is charged. Permission to use the world is granted for noncommercial fan fiction, art work and role-playing only. All dramatic and gaming rights to the Borderland world, characters and stories are strictly reserved by Ms. Windling.

    Terri Windling: The Wood Wife
    Orb (Trade Paperback), ISBN 0-765-30293-4
A melange of narrative prose, epistles, and poetry, The Wood Wife conjures interesting, if somewhat disturbing, visions of earth spirits, not necessarily benign, inhabiting the mountainous desert surrounding Tucson, Ariz. A journalist/poet, Maggie Black inherits the home and papers of poet Davis Cooper after he died of drowning in a dry streambed. Her strong desire to write Cooper's biography leads her to the desert where she begins trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the Pulitzer Prize winner's life and death.
Magic realism netted in the mundane trials of an ex-husband, a new man, neighbors with problems and the necessity of finding the truth about Davis Cooper for the biography reshapes the ordinary into something odd and unusual. Poetry, purportedly that of Davis Cooper, surrounds the narrative, and Cooper's letters (and those of his companion/lover, Anna, an artist) add spice to the tale and verisimilitude to the characterization. Ah, but did I like the book?
