Die Farben der Zeit
Willis, Connie

@import url(http://goblinhead.com/booklist/booklist.css); Heather's Book List What I'm reading this year... To Say Nothing of the Dog Willis, Connie (Author) Read August 05, 2003 Plans, intentions, reason. I could hear Professor Overforce now. “I knew it! This is nothing but an argument for a Grand Design!”
A Grand Design we couldn’t see because we were part of it. A Grand Design we only got occasional, fleeting glimpses of. A Grand Design involving the entire course of history and all of time and space that, for some unfathomable reason, chose to work out its design with cats and croquet mallets and pen wipers, to say nothing of the dog. And a hideous piece of Victorian artwork. And us.
“History is character,” Professor Peddick had said. And character had certainly played a part in the self-correction- Lizzie Bittner’s devotions to her husband and the colonel’s refusal to wear a coat in rainy weather, Verity’s fondness for cats, and [this cats] fondness for fish and Hitler’s temper and Mrs. Merling’s gullibility… if they were part of the self correction, what did that do to the notion of free will? Or was free will part of the plan as well?
This book started off slow and kind of confusing… but once I had the main characters straightened out, and the gist of the story, it picked up and was fun to read.

Christie for Christmas

Desperate for more Agatha Christie? Now there are two "new" mysteries by the late queen of clues.
By Jacqueline Carey Interview Twilight of a feminist By David Bowman Reviews "When Bad Things Happen to Other People" by John Portmann By Mary Elizabeth Williams The love that dare not squeak its name Even as a child I suspected I had something special in common with Stuart Little. By David Rakoff Dear Mr. Blue By Garrison Keillor Complete archives for Books Tempting fate cookbooks, Melanie Rehak on poetry and Jacqueline Carey on mysteries. By Polly Shulman Dec. 23, 1999 C onnie Willis, curmudgeon, book addict and philosopher, writes with a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. Like her literary ancestor G.K. Chesterton, another philosopher wit, she's fascinated with paradoxes of good and evil. Her twin advisors have various names: chaos and order, the past and the present, comedy and tragedy. But which is the angel and which the devil? In her world, the forces of dissolution may well turn out to be agents of a benign fate. Bellwether By Connie Willis Bantam/Spectra, 247 pages

Amerikkalaisen Connie Willisin Fantasian harrastajille

Connie Willis
Amazon A book review by Danny Yee In general I strongly dislike time-travel stories with their attendant implausiblities, but sometimes they have other qualities which redeem them. Doomsday Book is set in 2054, when time travel is run of the mill but everything else is, rather implausibly, pretty much like the present. The only real exception is a random collection of tech gadgets such as video phones and laser candles. Kivrin, a female undergraduate history student at Oxford, is to be the first person sent back to the Middle Ages (to 1320), because wait for it! no qualified historian is available. Everything goes wrong with the mission the bungling incompetence of the academics organising it is, unfortunately, quite plausible and she is delivered instead to 1348, the year the Black Plague reached England. Meanwhile a flu epidemic has hit 2054, and Oxford is quarantined. The bulk of the book consists of parallel accounts of the two epidemics and this is worked out much better than the time-travel setup. Despite the weaknesses in the science and the implausible 2054 Oxford, I enjoyed
