Jack Williamson has been in the forefront of science fiction since his first published story in 1928. Now in his ninth decade as a published author, Williamson is the acclaimed author of such trailblazing science fiction as The Humanoids and The Legion of Time. The Oxford English Dictionary credits Williamson with inventing the terms "genetic engineering" (in Dragon’s Island) and "terraforming" (in Seetee Ship). His seminal novel Darker Than You Think was a landmark speculation on the nature of shape-changing. Williamson has also been active academically. He has taught since in the 1950s and is professor emeritus at Eastern New Mexico University. He live and works in Portales, New Mexico.

cience fiction has had many great pioneers who explored the future through literature and made it one of the most influential of all literary genres. Few of those trailblazing writers, however, started earlier and came farther than Jack Williamson. He was born in 1908 and raised on a New Mexican farm, but his imagination reached far beyond the horizon, all the way to the stars. His novels Darker Than You Think, The Humanoids and The Legion of Space series are undisputed classics in the field. His most recent book, The Black Sun ,was published in 1997 and the next, The Silicon Dagger , will be published in the spring of 1999. Jack was also among the first of the renowned professional writers of science fiction to become a judge in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest. In September 1998, he was awarded the L. Ron Hubbard Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to the Arts.
ASI spoke with Jack at his home in Portales, New Mexico.

After 75 years of publishing, Jack Williamson is SF's Grandest Master
By Kathie Huddleston ack Williamson has been a storyteller for longer than most people have been alive. The 94-year-old Williamson may have started as a brash young man who wanted to try his hand at "scientifiction," but he's gone on to become one of the most revered science-fiction writers of all time. Born in 1908, Williamson traveled in a covered wagon to New Mexico, where he grew up on an isolated farm. He began his career in 1928, when he sold his first story, "The Metal Man," to the only "scientifiction" or science-fiction magazine that existed, Amazing Stories It's been 74 years of writing astounding fiction for Williamson. Some of his key works include the Legion of Space series, the Seetee series, the Humanoids series and the novels The Legion of Time and Darker Than You Think . Williamson might well have decided to slow down after his Grand Master Award in 1976, the second ever presented by the Science Fiction Writers of America. Instead, he has continued to publish compelling fiction, including the Hugo and Nebula award-winning novella "The Ultimate Earth" ( Analog Science Fiction and Fact , December 2000). Recent works include

    Virtual Marginalia
    Book title: Terraforming Earth
    Author: Jack Williamson
    Posted September 24, 2002
This book is so bad, it is almost not worth commenting on. However, I decided I should write something about it, if only to warn others away. Earth is destroyed by a rogue asteroid, but a rich Texan manages to sequester genetic material on the moon, so that future seeding of the planet may one day be possible. This genetic library is maintained by computers and robots, who monitor conditions on Earth and plan for the future. However, from time to time, the computer needs more information, so a handful of children are cloned, raised by the robots and sent to Earth when they turn 21 to see what can be seen. This is necessarily a long term project, so the computer clones the children over and over, as needed. It's particularly disappointing given Williamson's status in the field. Not only is he one of the Old Guard (having published his first story in 1928), but he also coined the word terraforming in a 1942 short story. Williamson's personal history is fascinating he was born in 1908 in the Arizona Territory, moved to New Mexico via a wagon train in 1915, served in World War II, earned a PhD in English in the 1950s and taught at a small university in New Mexico for 20 years. All of this provided him with rich fodder for some amazing science fiction that he churned out over a span of decades. Unfortunately, *none* of his genius is demonstrated in this book. Clearly, I'm going to have to reread some of his "Legion of Space" stuff in order to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

    Book title: The Humanoids
    Author: Jack Williamson
    Posted October 07, 2002
The Humanoids are beautiful, black androids whose mission is inscribed in yellow on their chests: "To Serve and Obey, And Guard Men from Harm." They carry out this task a little too zealously, preventing human engagement in any activity that might result in harm. Science is off limits because it involves dangerous equipment and uncomfortable ideas. Swimming isn't allowed because one might drown. Cooking and sewing are right out. The Humanoids control everything, erecting buildings whose doors cannot be opened by humans, and sewing clothes whose closures must be activated by special rays the Humanoids emit. This book (published in 1996) includes "With Folded Hands", the 1947 short story that introduced the Humanoids, and The Humanoids , the 1948 novel Williamson built out of the idea. Of the two, I liked the short story better. It introduces the core idea of the ways in which over-reliance on technology can harm humans and builds an interesting little story out of it. I'm coming to think that the short-story format is Williamson's strength, because his novels (at least the non-serialized novels) are not very good. The novel version of this story is less successful than the short story, mostly because of the ambiguous ending. It's not clear who wins the Humanoids or the rebels and the reader is not left with enough to chew on to make the ambiguity worth the trouble. The ending is also similar to Williamson's
