Add to a Notebook William Carlos Williams William Carlos Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, in 1883. He began writing poetry while a student at Horace Mann High School, at which time he made the decision to become both a writer and a doctor. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where he met and befriended Ezra Pound . Pound became a great influence in Williams' writing, and in 1913 arranged for the London publication of Williams's second collection, The Tempers . Returning to Rutherford, where he sustained his medical practice throughout his life, Williams began publishing in small magazines and embarked on a prolific career as a poet, novelist, essayist, and playwright. Following Pound, he was one of the principal poets of the Imagist movement, though as time went on, he began to increasingly disagree with the values put forth in the work of Pound and especially Eliot Allen Ginsberg and the Beats, were impressed by the accessibility of his language and his openness as a mentor. Modernism and Experimentation: Authors: William Carlos Williams (1883-1963)
Index William Carlos Williams was a practicing pediatrician throughout his life; he delivered over 2,000 babies and wrote poems on his prescription pads. Williams was a classmate of poets Ezra Pound and Hilda Doolittle, and his early poetry reveals the influence of Imagism. He later went on to champion the use of colloquial speech; his ear for the natural rhythms of American English helped free American poetry from the iambic meter that had dominated English verse since the Renaissance. His sympathy for ordinary working people, children, and everyday events in modern urban settings make his poetry attractive and accessible. "The Red Wheelbarrow" (1923), like a Dutch still life, finds interest and beauty in everyday objects. Williams cultivated a relaxed, natural poetry. In his hands, the poem was not to become a perfect object of art as in Stevens , or the carefully re-created Wordsworthian incident as in Frost.

    Daniel Morris
The Writings of William Carlos Williams "is lucidly written and coherently argued. Learned, insightful, and readable, the book will provide an important perspective on Williams's evolving career and indeed the conditions in American culture in which modernism arose. Morris places Williams in the context of humanistic criticism and gives Williams's fictions a modernist perspective. His book on Williams is an important contribution to understanding that figure both as a product of his culture and as a unique voice."Daniel R. Schwarz In The Writings of William Carlos Williams, Daniel Morris examines the previously neglected fiction written throughout Williams's career to explore the extreme shift in his poetry from the impersonal early lyrics to Paterson, the ultimate celebration of the poet as modernist cultural hero. With close textual analyses of Williams's writing in a variety of genres, including lyrics, short stories, novels, essays, and his epic poem, Morris demonstrates that Williams consciously shaped his identity as a public writer able to provide an unacknowledged social group with the dignity of appearance in distinguished classes of representation such as the modern poem. By examining the style of William's writing, as well as the narrative constructions of his persona as a capable manager of American technologies, medical sciences, economic practices, and language resources, Morris shows how Williams, over a thirty-year period, created a metanarrative that presented him as a figure situated between "elite" and "popular" forms of American culture. He also analyzes reviews of Williams's books that appeared with frequency in

This is a page dedicated to William Carlos Williams, a poet who had an immense influence on the course of 20th century poetry. He wrote in varying style and technique and was often radically experimental. His work is fresh and clear, rejecting sentimentality and vagueness. It also reflects emotional restraint and heightens the sensory experience with articulated common speech. Williams's work inspired many poets and many generations to follow. His work is both easy and enjoyable to read. E-Mail

Welcome to the web site of William Carlos Williams, the poet. This Web site is still under construction. Enjoy your stay.
Finally, after months of inactivity, the web page of William Carlos Williams is back. Even though the school project is over, I decided to keep this page. Enjoy!
Fixed a few mistakes here and there. Unfortunately(for me) my sponser went out of business. It doesn't really matter because it seemed that nobody was clicking on them anyway.
    Added a new poem.
I got a sponsor! I added the links section. I'm going to see if I can find some time to work on this website. A very shabby looking website. Probably most of the information here is useless(for school that is. Not that many people who would research about Williams as an interest).

Al Que Quiere! Kora in Hell Sour Grapes (1921), and Spring and All Paterson , an epic poem published in five volumes from 1946 to 1958. In 1926 he had won an award from The Dial for a poem titled "Paterson," and the theme stuck. Recognition came slowly. The University of Washington at Seattle invited him to be visiting professor of English in 1948, but his 1949 appointment as consultant of poetry at Library of Congress was withdrawn after an investigation into his associations with Ezra Pound, although the appointment was renewed in 1952. In 1950 Williams was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and in 1953 shared the Bollingen Award with Archibald MacLeish. All his life, from his early editing of Contact in 1923, Williams befriended younger poets. The letters to many, such as Denise Levertov, have survived. On March 4, 1963, Williams died in his sleep after years of illness, especially strokes in 1951-52, 1958, and 1961. He was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Gold Medal for Poetry of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
