William Carlos Williams
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. William Carlos Williams September 17 March 4 ), often abbreviated with the initials "WCW", was an American poet during the Modernist movement. Although he did not subscribe to the Imagist manifesto (essentially the manifesto written by Ezra Pound H.D. , and others that drove the Modernist movement in poetry), his work is often considered to be the epitome of it (see especially The Red Wheelbarrow and This Is Just To Say Throughout his lifetime Williams worked as a physician in the town of Rutherford, New Jersey . He received his M.D. from The University of Pennsylvania Medical School; where he also met and befriended fellow poet Ezra Pound. Williams has often been praised for his observation of "the local" in his poetry and for his pared-down, precise, and sharp style. Williams simplified the mystery of what makes good poetry when he said: "If it's not a pleasure, it's not a poem." Also, he is known for remarking that a poem is like a small "machine of words". His greatest masterpiece is considered to be the work Paterson , a poetic monument to (and personification of) the New Jersey Town.

He began writing poetry while a student at Horace Mann High School, at which time he made the decision to become both a writer and a doctor. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where he met and befriended Ezra Pound. Pound became a great influence in Williams' writing, and in 1913 arranged for the London publication of Williams's first collection, The Tempers
Returning to Rutherford, where he sustained his medical practice throughout his life, Williams began publishing in small magazines and embarked on a prolific career as a poet, novelist, essayist, and playwright. Following Pound, he was one of the principal poets of the Imagist movement, though as time went on, he began to increasingly disagree with the values put forth in the work of Pound and especially Eliot, who he felt were too attached to European culture and traditions.

William Carlos Williams
William Carlos Williams was born on September 17, 1883 in Rutherford, New Jersey. Like Chekhov, he studied medicine and became a country doctor before he discovered his potential as a writer. He earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and began practicing as a pediatrician in his hometown of Rutherford (near the present-day Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford) before publishing his first literary work, 'Poems,' in 1909. He wrote stories, plays and autobiographies as well as poems. His most memorable achievement is probably his five books of poetry about the humble and downtrodden Northern New Jersey city of Paterson , which few people would have seen as a fit subject for an epic poem. "No ideas but in things," he writes in the first page, and to hammer the point home he studs this unpretentious but dramatic work with ancient newspaper articles, anecdotes and letters from friends and admirers. One of the letter-writers was A.G., an enthusiastic young poet admirer from Paterson. This was the then-unknown Allen Ginsberg Williams wrote the introduction for Ginsberg's first book of poetry, "

WILLIAMS, WILLIAM CARLOS
, poet, essayist, novelist, short-story writer, and physician. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania (M.D., 1906), Williams spent nearly all his professional life, both as an obstetrician-general practitioner and an insistently American experimental writer, in and around his hometown of Rutherford, New Jersey. More single-mindedly than many of his contemporaries, Williams looked to American literary and political revolutions, and to a common language and even the pained screams of his patients, for topics and inspiration. A player in the New York art and poetry worlds, he frequented Alfred Stieglitz's 291 and other galleries and was an intimate friend of painters Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth, whose well-known Number 5, an abstract portrait of Williams, is based on the short poem "The Great Figure." He contributed poems, stories, and reviews to numerous American and international literary, artistic, and political magazines (Harriet Monroe's Poetry
