the millenium party by walter jon williams Darien was making another annotation to his lengthy commentary on the Tenjou Cycle He finished his annotation and then de-slotted the savant brain that contained the cross-referenced database that allowed him to manage his work. In its place he slotted the brain labeled Clarisse/Passion , the brain that contained memories of his time with his wife. Not all memories, however: the contents had been carefully purged of any of the last thousand years' disagreements, arguments, disappointments, infidelities, and misconnections . . . . The memories were only those of love, ardor, obsession, passion, and release, all the most intense and glorious moments of their thousand years together, all the times when Darien was drunk on Clarisse, intoxicated with her scent, her brilliance, her wit. The other moments, the less-than-perfect ones, he had stored elsewhere, in one brain or another, but he rarely reviewed them. Darien saw no reason why his mind should contain anything that was less than perfect. Flushed with the sensations that now poured through his mind, overwhelmed by the delirium of love, Darien began to work on his present for his wife.

Includes the sequel novella, "Solip:System" Classic Science Fiction Adventure From Walter Jon Williams G et ready for a different kind of war, with a different kind of hero. The mudboys and dirtgirls of a disadvantaged Earth have declared war on Heaven - the orbital society that controls their world, but can no longer control their destiny. A rightfully celebrated science fiction classic, set in a frightening not-too-distant future of high-tech wonders and shattered ideals, Hardwired is beautifully written literature and a hard-hitting adventure story, all in one glorious package. It has all my favorite things blood, love, fire, hate and a high ideal or two. I wish I'd written this one."

a review by Rich Horton Walter Jon Williams's The Praxis is the first volume of a series called collectively Dread Empire's Fall . It was published last year in the UK, and is due in the US any day now, a mass market paperback from HarperTorch. The UK edition is subtitled "Book One of Dread Empire's Fall", while the US edition is labeled Dread Empire's Fall: The Praxis This book is unabashed Space Opera, and I found it extremely fun reading. Every so often the characterization or the plotting seems to fall back on cliché and after the basic setup is pretty familiar, particular the rehashing of Naval Fiction standard situations. The book is also clearly the first of a series, thus the story doesn't really end those factors hold it short of excellence. But it's very good neatly conceived, with plenty of gripping action, and with two main characters who are interesting, and flawed in believable ways even while also supremely gifted in fairly standard commercial fiction fashions. The parts of the Galaxy linked by an extensive wormhole network are ruled, as the story opens, by the long-lived aliens called Shaa. They control several other spacegoing species the lizardlike Naxids, humans, the birdlike Lai-Own, the furry Torminel, etc. The basic philosophy of the Shaa is that everything worth knowing is already known. Their governing system, the Praxis, attempts to enforce absolute stability. Machine intelligence, genetic engineering, and certain other technology is forbidden. The ruling style is extremely hierarchical, and superiors have the right to kill inferiors for any reason whatsoever. The subordinate species seems essentially equal, sharing government and military posts, though there seem to be worlds, even sectors, dominated by one or another species.

Worlds That Weren't
(Roc, 2002)
Worlds That Weren't seems like a great idea. Four skilled alternate historians give us stories from worlds not so far removed from ours. Two philosophers, a war and a planetwide catastrophe plague these barely alternate worlds, but it's the history they don't have that hampers this ambitious project. Harry Turtledove starts things off subtly with "The Daimon," a just-barely alternate history. Those not familiar with Greek history may not even know what's alternate about this Socrates-centered tale until his decidedly non-hemlock death. A philosopher may not be the most obvious or even interesting subject for an alternate history, but Turtledove uses Socrates like a keystone, shifting the arc of history on the old man's participation. He also captures perfectly the annoying conversational style Socrates was notorious for in his own time, so that even the sympathetic reader can see how this single small voice could have brought such angry attention from the mighty Greek state. S.M. Stirling has casually dropped a rain of comets on the Earth's most developed nations, and created a huge wild world to play with. "Shikari in Galveston" happens in the recovering land of Texas, where the descendants of early settlers and old Native American tribes are creating a new society against the threat of the cannibal tribes that live in the thick woods. The Texan tribal culture is a joy to experience, recognizable to a native but as alien as any strange planet. Stirling draws inspiration from the unknown lands that populated Victorian fiction, and it shows in the unfettered enthusiasm of his writing. Though this is obviously a story linked to a larger tale, its Victorian feel makes it seem more like part of a serial than an uprooted prologue.
